MINOR IN SOCIOLOGY<br />

A Minor in Sociology seeks to provide a quality<br />

education to students, and to enrich their<br />

knowledge of modern societies, with particular<br />

emphasis on Lebanon and other Arab countries.<br />

The Minor aims at advancing a strong<br />

sociological understanding of contemporary<br />

society, addressing its complexities, and the<br />

individual’s place within it.<br />

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />

The purpose of the Minor in Sociology is to:<br />

1. Enhance students’ ability to think critically<br />

about sociological theories and social issues.<br />

2. Develop students’ research and writing skills.<br />

3. Develop students’ professional and<br />

practical skills, so as to assist them in<br />

obtaining jobs in the local, regional, and<br />

international markets.<br />

4. Provide a strong sociological grounding for<br />

students majoring in other disciplines.<br />

LEARNING OUTCOMES<br />

Graduates in the Minor in Sociology will:<br />

1. Acquire the ability to apply sociological<br />

concepts, to better understand the social<br />

issues, and to overcome social problems.<br />

2. Acquire the ability to find jobs in fields<br />

related to Sociology (social work, community<br />

development, social research, journalism,<br />

etc…)<br />

M.A. IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS<br />

MISSION<br />

Basing itself on the University’s mission, and<br />

building on <strong>LAU</strong>’s Bachelor of Arts programs<br />

in Political Science and Political Science–<br />

International Affairs, the M.A. program in<br />

International Affairs provides students with an<br />

in-depth understanding of the main theories,<br />

application of research methodologies and<br />

analysis of current debates and topics in<br />

international affairs.<br />

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES<br />

The purpose of the M.A. in International Affairs<br />

program is to:<br />

1. Prepare graduates for Ph.D. work at<br />

reputable institutions of higher learning,<br />

mainly in the United States, Canada, and<br />

Western Europe.<br />

2. Prepare graduates for careers in diplomacy,<br />

especially at the <strong>Lebanese</strong> Foreign<br />

Ministry, and the United Nations, and<br />

other professional careers at international,<br />

regional, and local governmental and nongovernmental<br />

organizations, particularly<br />

organizations focusing on developmental,<br />

civil society, and post-conflict peace<br />

building activities.<br />

3. Provide students with business-related<br />

majors with a comprehensive understanding<br />

of the workings of the international system<br />

and the policy making process.<br />
