Council’s Academic Awards<br />

Committee presented the 2013<br />

Mark Van Doren Award to<br />

Nichol<strong>as</strong> Dames, the Theodore Kahan<br />

Professor of Humanities and chair of the<br />

Department of English and Comparative<br />

Literature, and the Lionel Trilling Award<br />

to Boris G<strong>as</strong>parov, the Boris Bakhmeteff<br />

Professor of Russian and E<strong>as</strong>t European<br />

Studies. The awards were presented<br />

on May 8 in the Faculty Room of Low<br />

Library. Alan Timberlake, professor of<br />

Slavic languages and director, Institute<br />

of E<strong>as</strong>t Central Europe, accepted on<br />

G<strong>as</strong>parov’s behalf.<br />

The Mark Van Doren Award for Teaching<br />

h<strong>as</strong> been awarded annually since<br />

1962 in recognition of a faculty member’s<br />

humanity, devotion to truth and inspiring<br />

leadership. The award w<strong>as</strong> established<br />

in honor of Mark Van Doren ’21 GSAS,<br />

a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, novelist,<br />

playwright, critic, editor and biographer<br />

<strong>Columbia</strong> faculty member.<br />

The Lionel Trilling Book Award is<br />

awarded annually to a member of the<br />

faculty whose book w<strong>as</strong> published in the<br />

previous year and upholds a level of excellence<br />

commensurate with the work of<br />

Lionel Trilling ’25, ’38 GSAS. The award<br />

w<strong>as</strong> established in 1976 in honor of Trilling,<br />

a gifted and dedicated <strong>Columbia</strong><br />

professor who w<strong>as</strong> committed to undergraduate<br />

education, <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> a public<br />

intellectual known for his scholarship<br />

and literary criticism, which appealed to<br />

a wide audience. G<strong>as</strong>parov w<strong>as</strong> honored<br />

for his book Beyond Pure Re<strong>as</strong>on: Ferdinand<br />

de Saussure’s Philosophy of Language and Its<br />

Ten Arts and Sciences faculty members<br />

have been honored with the<br />

Lenfest Distinguished <strong>Columbia</strong><br />

Faculty Awards for their ability to engage,<br />

challenge and inspire students in the<br />

cl<strong>as</strong>sroom.<br />

Established in 2005 by University<br />

Trustee Gerry Lenfest ’58L, the awards are<br />

given annually to recognize and reward<br />

exceptional teaching and mentoring. This<br />

year’s recipients, who were honored at a<br />

dinner at the Italian Academy on February<br />

28, each will receive $25,000 per year<br />

for three consecutive years. They are<br />

Frances A. Champagne, <strong>as</strong>sociate professor<br />

of psychology; Jean Cohen, the Nell<br />

Early Romantic Antecedents.<br />

The awards are the only academic<br />

honors judged and presented by students.<br />

The 15–25 Academic Awards<br />

Committee members are selected by the<br />

co-chairs so the group represents a crosssection<br />

of cl<strong>as</strong>ses and majors. The committee<br />

seeks nominations for the awards<br />

and committee members audit the cl<strong>as</strong>ses<br />

of Van Doren Award nominees, read<br />

books under consideration for the Trilling<br />

Award and have discussions before deciding<br />

on the finalists.<br />

and Joseph Slaughter, <strong>as</strong>sociate professor<br />

of English and comparative literature.<br />
