CELEBRATING THE POWER OF PLACE
From the Tate Library to the Alex Cohen Theater,
our ever-changing campuses abound with places
and spaces where students, faculty, and alumni have
left their mark over the years. The photographs in
this annual report pay tribute to them.
Rediscovering the Past, Planning for the Future
Our 125th anniversary year has been a year
of wonderful discoveries from the past and
planning for the future. Through the various
events of this jubilee year, we have had the opportunity
to revisit our history and renew our commitment
to the ideals of our founder, Felix Adler.
Alumni, parents, students, and friends of the
school have joined us in many of the year’s celebrations:
the 125th anniversary/back to school picnic,
homecoming, and the alumni documentary fi lm
festival in March and April. Most notable was the
three-month long photo exhibit at the New-York
Historical Society, “From the Classroom to the
World: Hine, Ulmann, Strand, Arbus, and the Ethical
Culture Fieldston School.” Our wonderful gala
on April 12, with a splendid reception at the photo
exhibit and a performance by the Wynton Marsalis
Quartet, was a fi tting culmination for the year.
As this anniversary year comes to an end, we
move into the beginning of one of the most important
projects the school has undertaken in years: the
construction of a new physical education and sports
center, the construction of a new academic building
to house an expanded middle school, and the renovation
of 20,000 square feet of existing space to create
a new center for music and the performing arts.
Our campus plan is now complete. The planning
for our capital campaign continues with energy. We
look forward to opening the campaign in the early
winter of 2005 and the buildings in 2007.
Over the past spring and summer we have engaged
in a series of meetings and conversations about
diversity, aimed at understanding our strengths and
our needs. Though we are one of the most diverse
independent schools in the city, we still have more
work to do. This coming year we have invited Ed
Blackwell to join us as senior advisor and consultant
on diversity; we have also arranged for fi ve on-site
visits by Enid Lee, the noted curriculum consultant
for equitable education. We look forward to moving
this issue forward successfully.
This past year the annual fund exceeded its
ambitious goal of $2.25 million. We are gratifi ed
by the continuing increase in the number of participants
in the fund. We still need more of you to
help us in this important endeavor. A gift of $1,000,
for example, is the equivalent of $20,000 in endowment
each year. A gift of any size strengthens our
sense of commitment as it recognizes the impact of
the school on your life.
We are challenged in an ongoing way to balance
the budget, manage the ever-increasing costs
of program, and meet the needs of our faculty and
staff for salaries that are equitable and competitive
without overburdening the already signifi cant
tuition costs. In our fi nancial reports you can get
a good sense of the needs we have and how we are
currently meeting them.
I want to thank in particular our board of trustees,
led by James A. Gara ’72 and Nina P. Freedman
’73, for their creative leadership and support. I want
to especially acknowledge James Gara’s service as
chair and co-chair of the board for the last fi ve years.
While he has completed his service as chair, he will
continue as a member of the board, contributing his
experience and insights to the work ahead.
Winter/Spring 2004: The Big
Chill(out) party drew an enthusiastic
crowd. The 125th anniversary
celebration on April 12 started
with a reception at the photo
exhibit, “From the Classroom to
the World: Hine, Ulmann, Strand,
Arbus, and the Ethical Culture
Fieldston School.” A performance
by the Wynton Marsalis Quartet
capped off the evening. Fieldston
graduation on June 10 was cause for
celebration from students, family,
and faculty.
A Generous Community
In 2003–04, 2,831 members of the ECF community contributed $4,886,183 to the annual fund,
capital projects, fi nancial aid, enrichment programs, and the endowment, among other areas. ECF deeply
appreciates this investment in the future of the school.
We are particularly grateful to the following individuals, families, and members of foundations who chose
to express their commitment to the school with gifts of $25,000 or more. We thank them for their exemplary
leadership.
Our Family Tree: Consecutive Giving at ECF
A growing number of alumni, parents, grandparents, and other friends of ECF
have made a commitment to supporting the ECF annual fund every year. In
the donor lists throughout this annual report, you will see the ECF tree next
to the names of many members of our community, indicating those who have
contributed to the annual fund every year for at least 10 years. We give special
thanks to these donors for their steadfast support.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of donor lists. Should any
error have occurred, please call the offi ce of institutional advancement and
alumni at (212) 712-6245 with corrections.
Turning Thought to Action
This annual report gives us a formal opportunity
to thank everyone in our ECF community
for their valued support to the school
this past year, with gifts of their time, talent, and
treasure. As we have celebrated many events with
parents, alumni, friends, and students during this
125th year, support for ECF has been inspiring.
While it is expected that institutions celebrate
major anniversaries, we have discovered to our delight
unexpected surprises have emerged from our
own celebrations. Foremost among them, was the
opportunity to look back through beautiful photographs
to the vision that the founder Felix Adler
had for our school and to see, from sepia to black
and white to color, the promise that lies ahead. In
remembering our roots, we celebrate Adler’s dream,
then radical, of creating a school where children of
all classes and races would learn about their capability
and responsibility to make the world a better
place. In going forward we will continue to celebrate
the vision of a school fi rmly tied to its core
values: progressive education, academic learning,
ethical learning.
Our 125th anniversary committee co-chairs,
John Beres ’81 and G. Angela Flemister Henry ’75,
reached out to an enthusiastic group of alumni,
staff, teachers, and parents for their volunteer hours.
Our photo exhibit and our 125th gala sub-committees
did the same. They all followed the example of
our 125th anniversary theme – “turning thought to
action” – and we salute them.
This past year our board and committees have
worked on such varied projects as issues of student/
faculty life, admissions and affordability, diversity,
master planning/architect selection, external and internal
communications, advancement, fi nance, and
more. Every committee member, whether a parent,
alumnus/a, faculty, friend, or trustee, gave hours in
service to the school, and we are all the grateful benefi
ciaries of their hard work.
As a board of trustees, we continue to focus on
charting a course that will enhance the mission of
ECF and extend its legacy. We look forward to the
implementation of key components of the strategic
plan as well as many wonderful new initiatives in
the years ahead. We are indebted to the collective
leadership of our administrative team, faculty, and
staff who continue to turn these exciting educational
thoughts into action every day.
We are so fortunate to be alumni and parents of
children in the school, who enjoy the support and
fellowship of this outstanding community! We look
forward to accomplishing great things together in
the coming year and beyond.
Advancing the Cause
In this, our 125th anniversary year, we are proud
to say that institutional advancement enjoyed a
remarkably successful year with many noteworthy
benchmarks. Of course numbers don’t tell the
whole story, but they do demonstrate the heart and
soul and commitment of the ECF community.
We exceeded our annual fund goal of $2.25
million, our most ambitious goal ever.
We engaged more of our community in participating,
most notably:
❖ Parent participation was up 16 percent,
thanks in part to the parent agent program, a
new initiative powered by 60 dedicated parent
volunteers in all three school divisions.
❖ Alumni participation was up 27 percent.
❖ Parents of graduates participation was up
29 percent.
❖ The senior class and their families raised
$95,636, which will go to the Class of 2004
Green Fund, to support the purchase of trees
and/or shrubbery and gardens for the Riverdale
campus.
Further, the institutional advancement committee
of the board of trustees worked successfully
to raise both the levels and numbers of major gifts
to the school. Our planned giving program is up
and running, aided immeasurably by Jed Bernstein
’76, John Firestone ’76, Samuel C. Florman ’49,
Sheila Goldman ’51, Arthur Sarnoff ’44, and Rosalind
Singer ’42, the advisory committee of our Felix
Adler Circle. The silent phase of our capital campaign
is going well, buoyed by the efforts of senior
volunteers and staff. We are cheered by all of these
accomplishments, especially in such challenging
economic times.
At the heart of any strong advancement program
is the annual fund, and our community responded
generously. This support provides the
critical bridge between what it costs to educate each
student and the revenues generated by tuition and
endowment income. Tuition – full tuition – covers
only about 80 percent of the cost of educating each
ECF student, and we rely heavily on the annual
fund to make up the difference.
Special events afforded our community the opportunity
to participate in fundraising and enjoy
themselves in the process. Led by Jill Hayman, Peter
Mayer, and Michael Nott, the P&T sponsored
a wonderful fun-raiser and fund-raiser in January.
The Big Chill(out) party was enthusiastically attended
and raised $24,702 for the Annual Fund.
Then there was the 125th anniversary gala, attended
by over 800 and enjoyed by all (see photos on
page three) which raised close to $150,000.
We salute each and every individual who contributed
to the annual fund. As you review the lists
of names in this report, you will notice we have
taken special care to recognize those who have given
to the fund over the last 10 years or more. We are
particularly proud to honor this loyalty.
Staying on Track
We are once again ending our fi scal year
2003–2004 with a balanced budget. We
are proud to say that in so doing, we have
been able to fund the objectives we have set out for
this year while keeping our tuition at a lower level
than most of our peer schools. We have maintained
faculty compensation in the top tier of our competitor
schools and met our contractual obligations with
the faculty union. We have been able to fund faculty
professional development and mentoring programs,
fi nancial aid and student tutoring programs, staff
development initiatives, our ongoing commitment
to schoolwide diversity, as well as renovations and
improvements to our existing facilities.
I continue to be amazed by the generosity of
this community. Our various volunteer committees
are dedicated fi duciaries who invest enormous
time and energy to provide support and guidance
towards careful planning and thoughtful execution.
Our fi nance committee, chaired by parent John
Masten, plays an integral role in our fi nancial budgeting
and planning process. Our investment committee,
chaired by parent Mack Rossoff, thoughtfully
monitors our endowment’s performance, and
as a result, our portfolio has generated impressive
returns. Our audit committee, chaired by parent
Peter Joseph, provides the oversight necessary to ensure
that we continue to be fi scally responsible. Our
buildings and grounds committee, chaired by Brad
demands of maintaining our two campuses.
At the same time, the generosity of our benefactors
has signifi cantly helped us meet our objectives
and fund some of the renovation work we have
recently completed on both campuses this year. At
Fieldston, we reconstructed the Quad steps and restored
some of the external façade; we refurbished
the fi rst fl oor of the Tate Library to enable a more
attractive display of student art work. We have
newly renovated classrooms in Science (Bio Lab)
and Art (Draw Lab). The administration building
has new bathrooms, and the faculty room has been
refurbished. We have also created an offi ce for our
Fieldston News student staff. At Fieldston Lower,
we have beautiful new kindergarten classrooms and
bathrooms. At Ethical, we have refurbished our
P&T (Reception) room, reconstructed our elevator,
totally renovated our 6th fl oor gym, and replaced
the windows in the cafeteria, and installed signage
throughout the building. Much credit is due to
our administrative and maintenance staff, including
Gene Kivlan and Joe Piselli, for their continued
dedication and hard work.
This year we have made considerable progress
on a project of historic proportions: the
expansion of the campus at Fieldston. This
initiative, unanimously endorsed by the board
of trustees, responds to a number of imperatives
in the school’s strategic plan, including the
establishment of an expanded 6-8 grade middle
school and expanded and enhanced facilities for
academics, arts, and athletics.
Two years ago, after a rigorous search, we
retained our major building partners: the
architectural fi rm, Cooper, Robertson & Partners;
the construction management fi rm, Tishman
Corporation; and the project management
fi rm, Levien & Company. During the past year,
we engaged our educators, parents, and students
in the completion of program planning to ensure
a building design responsive to the school’s programmatic
needs. We formed a “green committee”
who will make sure that our buildings are not
only environmentally friendly, but will provide
learning opportunities for our students and our
community at large. We also formed a safety
committee who will work with our retained
site safety consultants to ensure that we are, at
all times possible, proactively responsive to our
community’s safety needs. We also retained the
law offi ces of Claudia Wagner to help us reach
out to our neighbors and our local offi cials to
share our plans and communicate our good will.
This past summer, the design documents and
related cost estimates were completed. These are
scheduled to be reviewed by our board of trustees
early this fall. The board will deliberate on the
extent of the work that we will undertake and
how we will endeavor to fi nance this undertaking.
Presently, the overall plan calls for work
to begin over the coming winter recess, with
heavy construction taking place in the summer
of 2005. Our goal is for the new middle school
building and related renovated program space to
open in the fall of 2007, and for the new athletic
facilities to open in the winter of 2006.
There is no question that a project of this
scope is a formidable challenge. The weak economy
and uncertain times continue to challenge us.
Given our track record, however, I believe these
challenges will continue to unite the community
and strengthen its commitment to ECF and its
strategic goals. I am, once again, grateful to those
who have helped us achieve our objectives.
Donors to the ECF Annual Fund
A vital source of support for the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, the
Annual Fund serves as a means for alumni, parents, and friends to sustain
and advance the mission of ECF. Gifts to this fund go directly into the
WHEN I ARRIVED AT HARVARD, more than 50 years ago, I quickly
learned how much better was the education Ethical and Fieldston
had given me than that possessed by my Harvard classmates. I
have never forgotten my years at Ethical and Fieldston and remain grateful
for the experience. I am pleased to support the school that continues to give
that experience to others.”
I
HAD TO CATCH MY BREATH when I fi rst re-entered Fieldston as an adult
– and a parent – a few years ago. I found to my great relief an institution
that had held to the basic intellectual and civic missions that had helped
shape me as a child. But I also saw before me a contemporary place, a school
that was operating squarely in the here and now, challenging itself to make
its ideals live effectively in the current world. This self-refl ection and renewal
mirrors what a Fieldston education is all about.”
I’D SAY it was the Ethical philosophy and the faculty, parents, and kids that it attracts
that initially appealed to us. As our daughter, Kate, has developed through
her early grades, we have seen, fi rsthand, the results of this ethic. The ECF community
continues to strive to update and improve, and we are proud to be a part of this
and to be able to contribute to this growth in every way that we can.”
WHEN OUR DAUGHTER transferred in tenth grade from a smaller
all-girls school, we had some concerns about her (and us) adjusting
to a much larger environment, but Fieldston turned out to be very
accessible at every level and the transition was made easy. That’s just one
of the things we have come to admire in the school, but there is much more
– we love its rich, diverse curriculum, wonderful, involved teaching staff,
expert college advisory, and New York’s greatest girls volleyball team and
coach!”
GIFTS TO ENDOWED FUNDS
Endowed gifts support academic and program excellence in
perpetuity. The principal of each endowed gift is preserved
while its earnings benefi t students, faculty, and programs.
The following alumni, parents, and friends are furthering
ECF’s mission, while simultaneously honoring a spouse,
a family member, or a colleague in a meaningful way, all
while reducing their own tax burdens.
TRIBUTE GIFTS
Each year alumni, parents, and friends make commemorative
gifts to ECF. Many of these gifts celebrate a signifi cant
occasion in the life of a loved one, friend, or colleague, the
birth of a child, a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation, a
new job, a promotion, or a retirement. No matter the occasion,
such gifts honor people in a thoughtful, generous way.
Memorial gifts perpetuate the memory of the deceased while
also helping to enhance the quality of an ECF education.
NAMED FUNDS AND BEQUESTS
Alumni, parents, and friends establish named funds to express
their support of many schoolwide disciplines and their belief
in faculty development, excellence in teaching, curriculum
innovation, fi nancial aid and scholarships, the importance of
books, fi ne and performing arts, ethics, and overall academic
excellence. Such funds are often created in honor of one’s family
name, a relative, or a beloved ECF teacher or administrator.
Alumni and friends also use their wills to make generous
future gifts to ECF while still benefi ting their loved ones.
Ethical Culture Principal
Committed to academic excellence, progressive education, and
ethical learning, the Ethical Culture Fieldston School has sustained
the integrity of Adler’s original mission for over 125 years.
Founded in 1878, it now serves 1,600 students on two campuses.
Its two lower school divisions, Ethical Culture and Fieldston
Lower, teach grades PreK through 6; Fieldston teaches grades 7
through 12. With a diverse community and a dedicated faculty
who encourage students to become independent thinkers and lifelong
learners, the school offers a rich and challenging curriculum
in the arts, sciences, and humanities.
Annual Fund Annual Fund gifts support the current year’s budget,
supporting every aspect of ECF’s operation: building maintenance,
library acquisitions, scholarships, faculty and staff salaries, thus
helping to bridge the 20 percent gap between income from tuition
and the actual cost of educating each student.
Capital Gifts Capital Gifts are used to strengthen ECF’s endowment,
for signifi cant building renovations or for permanent funds
that will be invested to produce income for essential expenditures.
Enabling ECF to accommodate the latest technologies and teaching
initiatives, capital gifts support the building of new facilities and the
renovation of existing ones. Recent examples include the painting
of hallways and the renovation of three classrooms at Fieldston
Lower, renovation of the photography lab and gymnasium at
Fieldston, and the installation of a bench on the Quad in memory
of Jonathan Burchell ’91.
Capital Campaign A major fundraising campaign, conducted
over several years time, to raise substantial funds to fi nance major
endeavors such as construction, renovation, endowment, or
fi nancial aid.
Endowed Gifts Endowed gifts support academic and program
excellence in perpetuity. The principal of each endowed gift
is preserved while its earnings benefi t students, faculty and
programs.
Endowment A permanent fund that is invested to produce
income to meet the day-to-day needs of the school or to address
needs as they arise. As of June 30, 2004, ECF’s endowment was
$50,614,000.
Gifts in Kind Some alumni, parents, and friends donate thoughtful
non-monetary gifts, which otherwise would have to be purchased
by the school. Examples include computers, a microscope, a
camera, printing services, and printers.
Gifts of Real Estate, Life Insurance, Retirement Plans, IRAs,
and Personal Property Making gifts of primary residences,
vacation homes, land, other personal property as well as life
insurance, retirement plans, or IRAs can be quite advantageous to
both donors and the school.
Gifts of Securities Donors wishing to give long-term securities
(securities held for at least one year) will fi nd the tax advantages
particularly benefi cial. Gifts of long-term securities entitle donors
to a tax deduction for the gift, up to a maximum of 30 percent of
your adjusted gross income with a fi ve-year carry-over period for
the excess.
Matching Gifts Gifts which are doubled or even tripled because
foundations and corporations match gifts to ECF made by their
employees. We receive approximately $30,000 in matching gifts to
the Annual Fund. Each year nearly 7,500 companies nationwide
support the philanthropic interest of their employees, so check with
your company and obtain a matching gift form
Named Funds and Bequests Alumni, parents and friends
establish named funds to express their support of many schoolwide
disciplines and their belief in faculty development, excellence in
teaching, curriculum innovation, fi nancial aid and scholarships, the
importance of books, fi ne and performing arts, ethics and overall
academic excellence. Such funds are often created in honor of one’s
family name, a relative, or a beloved ECF teacher or administrator.
Alumni and friends also use their wills to make generous future
gifts to ECF while still benefi ting their loved ones.
Participation A measure, usually expressed in percentages, of how
many donors in a specifi c group have made gifts. Corporations,
foundations, and others view a high percentage as a high vote of
confi dence in the school from those who know and love it best.
Planned Gifts Your will can be a creative vehicle for making
thoughtful gifts to benefi t ECF along with your loved ones and
others. Bequests are exempt from both federal and state estate
taxes and any limitation on deductions. Donors can bequeath
an unrestricted gift, endowed fund, or scholarship to benefi t the
school for years to come.
Be bold, and mighty forces will come to your aid. – Almost Famous
Programmatic Gifts Supporting many schoolwide initiatives
essential to the ECF community, programmatic gifts include
the Fieldston Enrichment Program (FEP), Young Dancemakers,
the Summer Service Institute (SSI), learning styles, community
services, and tutoring.
Restricted Gifts Given by donors to specifi c purposes such as a
designated classroom renovation, a precise part of the academic
program.
Sixth Form Gift Traditionally given to the Ethical Culture
Fieldston School by parents in honor of their children and made in
the name of the graduating class. Some of the past gifts have been
to the Tate Library, Financial Aid, a Memorial Scholarship and the
Fieldston Quad Landscaping Project
Tribute Gifts Every year alumni, parents, and friends make
commemorative gifts to ECF. Many of these gifts celebrate a
signifi cant occasion in the life of a loved one, friend or colleague
– the birth of a child, a wedding, an anniversary, a graduation, a
new job, a promotion, or a retirement. No matter the occasion,
such gifts honor people in a thoughtful, generous way. Memorial
gifts perpetuate the memory of the deceased while also helping to
enhance the quality of an ECF education.
Unrestricted Gifts Allow ECF to use donors’ gifts to meet the
school’s most immediate needs. Categories of unrestricted gifts
include the following: ECF’s greatest needs; fi nancial aid and student
life; faculty enrichment; technology; campus improvements.
If you have any questions or comments about giving to ECF, we
encourage you to contact ECF’s institutional advancement department
at (212) 712-6245. For specifi c questions about planned giving,
contact Art Robinson, director of planned giving, at (212) 712-6241.
