Dear Friends of Bishop Ward High School, 

Thank you very much for attending the 2010 Bishop Ward Auction and for 

supporting our students! 

We continue to work very hard to be true to our mission to provide a 

quality Catholic, college-prep education that promotes the development of 

the body, mind and soul of each student. 

A few highlights: 

•On average over 94% of Bishop Ward graduates go straight to 

college. 

•We have more spiritual retreats and prayer opportunities for 

faculty and students than previous years. 

•Our new food service program is providing nutritious and 

delicious food in the cafeteria. 

•We are building a robot for the KC metro area robotics 

competition. 

•A shark has been added to the St. Francis of Assisi Animal Room. 

•The list goes on and on . . . 

Tonight’s Fund-A-Need helps with renovations in the kitchen and cafeteria. 

We want to make upgrades to the space and make it more functional and 

beautiful. A first class kitchen will allow us to serve more students during 

the lunch period and also help us with the special events we like to hold in 

the cafeteria and gym.

Fund-a-Need 2009 Update 

In 2009, bidders like you raised a record $96,000 to help 

Bishop Ward purchase the two new buses that were the featured 

items in the 2009 Fund-A-Need. 

Already the buses have saved Bishop Ward more than 

$12,500 and have taken our students on over 150 trips to places 

like: 

•Faith retreats in Atchison, KS 

•College campus visits 

•Athletic competitions and camps for all teams 

•Community service projects 

•Academy of Finance trips 

•Nelson-Atkins Art Museum 

•Kansas City Repertory Theatre

Wellness for Ward 

You can help set a standard of excellence for health and wellness at 

Bishop Ward by supporting the 2010 Fund-A-Need. Your bid will help 

renovate the kitchen and cafeteria into a state-of-the-art Cyclone Cafe 

that will better provide students with fresh and healthy food options. 

WHY WELLNESS FOR WARD 

IS OUR “DESTINY”: 

•With Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease on the rise, 

Bishop Ward saw the need to change the food it was serving to 

students. 

•In August 2010, Bishop Ward started a new food program, Bistro 

Kids, that provides organic, locally-grown, and freshly prepared meals for 

students. 

•A new kitchen and cafeteria will provide the healthy, nutritious 

food students need to form good eating habits and improve their 

concentration and learning.

NEW PROGRAMS AT BISHOP WARD 

Robotics 

A robotics team is forming this 

spring! Students will build a 

robot and program it to do 

certain tasks. The Bishop Ward 

robot will then face-off against 

rival robots in competitions 

against other area high schools. 

St. Luke the 

Physician Club 

Returning for a second year, 

the St. Luke the Physician 

Club consists of students interested 

in the medical fields. 

The club meets monthly and 

students are mentored by 

urologist Dr. Brad Stanley, 

who this past April took 

students to watch a surgery

Science Lecture Series 

Continuing Bishop Ward’s proud tradition 

of producing scientists for the world, the 

Science Lecture Series features notable 

figures of the science community who 

give talks to students interested in a certain 

field. This year’s series began with a talk by 

Dr. Barry Kaplan of the National Institute 

of Health in Bethesda, MD.

How It Works 

• You transfer appreciated stocks, bonds or mutual fund shares you 

have owned for one year or more to Bishop Ward. 

• Bishop Ward sells your securities and uses the proceeds for 

scholarships and special programs. 

Benefits 

• You receive an immediate income-tax deduction for the fair 

market value of the securities on the date of transfer, no matter 

what you originally paid for them. 

• You pay no capital gains tax on the transfer. 

• Giving appreciated stock could be more benefi cial than giving 

cash

Legacy Society 

An important way in which you can support the legacy and tradition of 

Bishop Ward High School is through charitable giving. There are a 

number of ways to support the mission of the school and secure the 

future for tomorrow’s students. 

For example, your gifts can go toward scholarships. A minimum of 

$10,000 would result in a scholarship fund in the name of your choice. 

Charitable gifts can also result in savings on your income, estate, and 

gift taxes as well as avoidance of capital gains taxes. There are a number 

of ways to give, and charitable planning techniques allow you to give 

now or at the time of your death. 

The Legacy Society at Bishop Ward High School includes alumni and 

friends who have either made a gift of at least $10,000 to the permanent 

endowment fund and/or have included Bishop Ward High School in 

their estate plans. 

Thank you to our Legacy Society members for their belief in the Bishop 

Ward mission and their vote of confidence and faith in our future. It 

is alumni and friends like them who will ensure the bright future for
