Happy birthday Pritchards!
PRITCHARDS is now
14 years old. And
as an established
family business and
with over 45 years combined
experience in the textile aftercare
industry, Graham Petty,
one of the partners had originally
trained as a tailor for the
famed Burberry’s and moved
into dry-cleaning some 30
years ago, he has extensive
experience in hands on drycleaning
and senior management
in two of large chains of
drycleaners.
Owners Graham and
Dawn decided to start in
Wellington as it lacked a
specialist dry-cleaning and
laundry business. They feel
their personal, attentive service
to clients, with their dedication
and wealth of experience,
is why Pritchards have
been such a great success
An award
so near yet
so far for
Ted Cowling
LOCAL MAN Ted
Cowling looks like
having to wait for
the opportunity of
receiving the Medal
of Ushakov in recognition of
the bravery shown by a few
select airmen who flew an
American diplomat to Archangel
in Russia to pave the
way for the Arctic Convoys.
The Convoys went some
way to helping Russia fight
on the Western Front against
German invaders and so,
helped shorten the war.
Ted (aged 94) has had
confirmation the medal will
be awarded him at the Russian
Embassy in London, but
the Ukrainian situation must
throw some doubt about the
award taking place in the
near future.
Ted, whose health is
not good at the moment,
received a warm message
of support from Alexander
Yakovenko, the Russian Ambassador
recently. He wrote:
Please accept my warmest
greetings and best wishes
for your birthday (Ted’s
94th).
What you did 70 years
ago, taking part in what Sir
Winston Churchill justly qualified
as the worst journey in
the world, was extraordinary
by far beyond the call of duty.
I would like to express our
gratitude for the invaluable
contribution you and your
Arctic Convoy comrades-inarms
made to the defeat of
Nazi Germany. It will always
be remembered by Russian
and British people, will continue
to serve as the supreme
measure of bravery.
I am confident that it was
not by accident that our nations,
as was the case of
World War One, found themselves
on the right side of
history, which the followers of
the ideology of hatred want-
06 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
ed to stop, while depriving
nations of their inalienable
right to decide their destiny.
The Allied effort demanded
all the best in the national
spirit of the British and the
peoples of the Soviet Union,
including Russia, the very
strength of character that all
of us are rightfully proud of.
The comradeship-in-arms,
that was born at the truly critical
juncture for destinies of
many nations and human civilization
overall, will continue
to be a crucial element of the
spiritual heritage of Europe,
of our bilateral relationship,
including ties between our
navies.
The last but not the least:
age is strictly a case of mind
over matter. If you do not
mind, it does not matter. Many
happy returns of the day!
Ted was delighted to receive
confirmation of the
award and the birthday wishes
of Mr Yakovenko, but he
is frustrated that the award is
so near yet so far from him.
Ted Cowling is the only remaining
member of the crew
of the Catalina W8416 aircraft
that flew from Lossiemouth
in Scotland to Archangel in
Russia in 1941 under the
control of Flight Lieutenant
David C. McKinley DFC.
The flight was a last-gasp
attempt by Harry Hopkins,
envoy to President Roosevelt,
to offer help to Joseph
Stalin who was under
pressure from Hitler’s troops
when they launched the
Western Front invasion.
Russia was running out of
tanks, aircraft and ammunition
and the flight to Archangel
was an attempt to prop
up the Russian defence.
The agreement reached
by Hopkins and Stalin led to
the commencement of the
Arctic Convoys and eventually
to Russia defeating the
German onslaught.
Ted Cowling is to be presented
with the Ushakov
Medal for bravery as will the
other hundred-or-so survivors
of the Arctic Convoys.
Ted and many brave sailors
have already been decorated
by the UK government with
the Arctic Star, which is a
campaign medal.
In recognition of the
bravery of Ted Cowling and
all the other heroes of the
Arctic Convoy, we publish
this account by Matthew B.
Willis, written in 1994 and
presented to Flight Lieutenant
McKinley’s widow who
in turn gave it to Ted on her
husband’s death. Ted is the
last surviving member of the
flight.
A BRAVE
JOURNEY
LOCH LOMOND is
one of the most
beloved lakes in
all of Scotland.
The Lock itself is
23 miles in length and between
half a mile and five
miles wide. In the south, soft
green hills slope down to
its shore.
On the last Sunday in July
1941, Flight Lietenant David
C. McKinley DFC and the
crew of a Catlalina W8416 of
from Invergorgon to Archangel
in Russia. Russia was
locked in a bitter defence of
its capital with Hitler’s troops
invading Russia.
had forged a friendship
which would prove to be
of enormous benefit to both
their countries.
Hopkins wanted, as part
the RAF Coastal Command This mission was arranged
of his mission, to appraise
by the British Prime were taking their ease on
Churchill of Roosevelt’s de-
Lock Lomond after weeks of Minister, Winston Churchill, sire to meet him in the near
patrolling the northwest approaches
between Scotland
and Iceland.
McKinley had no way of
knowing that he was about
to leave this idyllic Lock for
as a special favour to President
Roosevelt. The most
prominent passenger was a
50 year-old American named
Harry Lloyd Hopkins.
On January 10, 1941,
future.
According to Churchill:
“The first topic which he
opened to me was the new
situation created by Hitler’s
invasion of Russia.” A short
one of the most dramatic Hopkins, as the personal time later, Hopkins asked
flights of World War II.
McKinley was summoned
to a high-level briefing. At
his briefing in Invergordon
he learned that he was to
fly three important persons
envoy of Franklin Roosevelt,
had called at Downing Street
on his first diplomatic assignment.
During this five-week mission
Churchill and Hopkins
Churchill whether it was
possible to fly to Moscow
and return within one week.
Churchill informed him that
the RAF Coastal Command
had recently commenced
“
If you mean we should go higher
I can assure you there are plenty
of enemy patrols high up and
they are ready to see we don’t
get to Archangel!
“ WHAT YOU DID 70 YEARS AGO,
TAKING PART IN WHAT SIR WINSTON
CHURCHILL JUSTLY QUALIFIED
AS THE WORST JOURNEY IN THE
WORLD, WAS EXTRAORDINARY BY
FAR BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY.
“
The Medal
of Ushakov
The Medal of Ushakov is a Soviet military award created on March 3,
1944 by decision of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. It was named in
honour of Russian admiral Fyodor Ushakov who never lost a battle and
was proclaimed patron saint of the Russian Navy.
The Medal of Ushakov was awarded to sailors and soldiers, petty
officers and sergeants, ensigns and warrant officers of the Soviet Navy,
Naval Infantry and naval units of KGB Border Troops for courage and
bravery displayed both in wartime and in peacetime during the defence
of the Soviet Union in naval theatres, while protecting the maritime
borders of the USSR, during military duties with a risk to life.
> Flight
Lietenant
David C.
McKinley
DFC
lowing much anchor chain to
fall out and hammer on the
windscreen. A later take off
was successful but an hour
later an alarmed naval flyer
tapped me on the shoulder
saying: ‘Hy, Captain, why
after so much time are we
only 500 feet We’ll never
get to Archangel unless we
can do better’. I said: ‘If you
mean we should go higher
I can assure you there are
plenty of enemy patrols high
“ On first take off the nose anchor
hatch blew open allowing much
anchor chain to fall out and
hammer on the windscreen.
interpreter that the Russian
authorities were determined
to delay Hopkins return to
the UK.
“After a further day’s delay
we set off on what proved to
be a 24 hours flight during
which we were fired on by a
“
Russian destroyer.
“Meanwhile Hopkins’
condition had deteriorated
with worse to come as he
had left his special medicine
in Moscow and I had nothing
suitable on board. Due
to the delay HMS KG Five
had to leave Scapa to make
a planned meeting off Newfoundland
with Roosevelt.
“We rendezvoused out at
sea to face the problem of
transferring Hopkins, who
was determined to swim
to the battleship, but fortunately
I dissuaded him and
persuaded KG Five to send
a Cutter alongside. Hopkins
climbed on top of the Catalina
and after a shaky wave
goodbye, leapt into the arms
of the Cutter’s crew, turning
once again to wave – what a
man – what guts!”
flights by PBY flying boats
from Invergordon in Scotland
around the north cape
of Norway to Archangel but
Churchill was not enthusiastic
about such a long and
hazardous undertaking.
Hopkins was undeterred.
On Friday evening, July 25
he and the new American
Ambassador, John G Winant,
drafted a cable to Roosevelt
stating the rationale
for the proposed mission
which read in part:
“I am wondering whether
you would think it important
and useful for me to go to
Moscow. Air transportation
good and can reach there
in twenty four hours . . . If
Stalin could in any way be
influenced at a critical time I
think it would be worth doing
by a direct communication
from you through a personal
envoy. I think the stakes
are so great that it should
be done. Stalin would then
know in an unmistakable
way that we mean business
on a long-term supply job.
I, of course, have made no
moves in regard to this and
> The Russian 60th anniversary certificate and medal for the
mission to Russia on 28 July 1941.
await your reply.”
Within 24 hours Roosevelt
had approved Hopkins’ mission
and so the preparations
were put into place for the
hazardous flight, but first ensuring
extra fuel tanks were
fitted.
McKinley himself takes
over the story in his own
words as provided to Ted
Cowling by his widow.
“In late July I was selected
to take Harry Hopkins,
President Roosevelt’s
envoy, to Russia. I was under
strict instructions not to
have or make any records of
the flight.
“I flew to Invergordon to
meet a very sick Hopkins
and two other Americans,
one a young naval flyer.
“On first take off the nose
anchor hatch blew open al-
up and they are ready to see
we don’t get to Archangel!’
“After 20 hours we had a
noisy reception in Archangel
and an exhausted Hopkins
was determined to press on
to Moscow as soon as possible
but the reception party,
fortified by much Vodka and
cigarettes, was determined
to make the best of the party
and after a couple of hours a
very senior Russian Admiral ,
armed to the teeth collapsed
on the floor, soon to be surrounded
by several good
looking females determined
to revive him.
“Later during refuelling, I
noticed the plane was very
low in the water and after a
check, I found we had been
filled up with water instead
of petrol. I quickly discovered
Telford and Wrekin Council.
It was built in 1868-1869
as a memorial to John
Anstice, after his death in
manager of the Madeley
Wood Company. He was
much respected as an employer,
sparing no expense
to improve the safety of
his workers and keeping
his men employed during
lean times.
His death was much lamented
by Madeley folk,
his funeral was attended
by 4-5,000 people. All local
works closed for the day,
plus schools and shops,
locally. Blinds were drawn
in many homes.
The Anstice Community
Team’s draft business
plan says: “The Anstice
generous fishmonger).
Then there are those
named after their destination
- Whitchurch Drive, Holyhead
Road, Dawley Road,
Apley Drive, Apley Avenue,
Leegomery Road, Wrockwardine
Road, Admaston
Road, Arleston Lane, Wrekin
Road, Ercall Lane, Bratton
Road.
Some roads are named
for an important building -
New Church Road (Christ
Church), Church Street (All
Saints Church) Mill Bank,
Mill Fields and Mill Lane
(Windmills) School Lane
(Prince’s Street School),
College Lane (Wrekin College),
Market Street, Vineyard
Road (The Vineyard).
Many roads and streets
are named after Royalty,
such as Victoria Avenue, Victoria
Street, Charles Road,
Princess Avenue, Kingsland,
Kingsway, King’s Haye
Road, Regent Street, Albert
Road, George Place, Windsor
Road,
Naming streets isn’t easy;
I found this out at the end of
the 1950s when I was chairman
of the planning committee
of Wellington UDC.
We had just acquired the
Dothill estate. It was bought
from Harry Hodgson, who
was managing director of
Sankey’s. He had bought it
from the Groom family and
it had previously been the
home of Lord Forester’s family.
It was bought at ‘agricultural
rates’ (its value as
farmland) and of course it
was much more valuable as
a building site. This is one of
the ways governments, both
national and local, can make
money, by buying farmland
and selling some of it to
developers. Telford Development
Corporation made an
enormous amount this way.
TDC bought (often by compulsory
purchase) farms and
fields cheaply. They then
enhanced its value by giving
planning permission and
sold it to developers. This is
still going on. Is it cheating
There was a plan of many
roads, houses, shops and
schools on the Dothill land
and the roads needed to be
named. I sat down with a
local map and made a list of
suitable Shropshire streams
and rivers. There were not
enough so I added villages
and later saints. So to anyone
who lives in Dothill,
in Severn Drive, Clunbury
Road or St Paul’s Drive or
any of the similarly named
roads, if you don’t like the
name, blame me.
Some of our names can
be a bit odd in their origins.
Telford Road for instance
pre-dates the - new town.
and was originally a ‘selfbuild’
scheme, where families
built their own houses
with a bit of help from the
council. It was declared
open by the then minister
for housing and local government,
Enoch Powell.
That’s before Edward Heath
sacked him for his ‘Rivers of
Blood’ speech.
Powder Lane, I have been
told by a reliable source.
(he said, ‘Don’t quote me’
so I won’t), was named for
a Great War shed at the
back of Bradley Moor house
where ammunition was
stored. It was remembered
as an ancient wooden shed.
I had been wondering about
this for years and invented
several stories, but this must
be the right one at last.
Pendil Close must be the
only road we have that was
named after a racehorse that
grazed in the field. Ronald
Murphy, I think, was the owner
also of Wrekin Rambler.
Paul Woodhall came from
a well-respected Wellington
family also associated with
horses.
He was Town Mayor of
Wellington some years ago
and died while still in office.
The Town Councillors
thought he should be honoured
by having a street
named after him and wrote
to the Borough Council
(whose responsibility it is to
name streets) asking for this
to be done.
Woodhall Close is a little
cul-de-sac just outside
the town boundary and in
Wrockwardine parish. Of
course a road within Wellington
should have been
chosen but we were told
that it was too late to change
and we were too fussy.
There are many more
interesting street names in
Wellington and also in other
towns and villages within the
county of The Wrekin. To
any reader who is interested
in this subject I suggest you
look around your own area
and see what you can find.
Wrekin News would probably
be interested in your
discoveries.
Finally - I have promised
to write an article about
some of Wellington’s older
streets, some of which have
changed their names over
the years. This will be published
in Wellington History
Group magazine, Wellingtonia.
Some time ago I was
accosted by a lady
asking about the
history of Arleston.
It’s a very long story - at least
a thousand years - and the
small part that I know would
take longer than she was
prepared to wait but I managed
to come up with a bit of
it for her. We ended up talking
about street names and
how they came about, which
has inspired this kiloverb.
Let me tell you of one
street lane I don’t know
and wish I did. It’s Barnfield
Crescent, where I live. There
wasn’t a barn in the field
which was here before the
houses or in the deer park
before the fields, so how
did it get its name Thomas
Barnfield was a 16th Century
poet who wrote, ‘Nothing is
more certain than uncertainties/
Fortune is full of fresh
variety, constant only in its
inconstancy’. I hope it was
him but can’t find any evidence
anywhere. Please, if
you know, tell me.
Often streets are named
after prominent local people
- John Broad was the
town clerk who negotiated
with the College of Heralds
and organised the production
of the Wellington Coat
of Arms that is used by the
present town Council and
Civic Society, hence John
Broad Avenue. John Bayley
built up what is now called
Wrekin College which explains
Bayley Road; Mellor
and Eva Harrison have a
road between them. The unofficial
rule seems to be that
you have to die before you
can have a street named
after you.
There are lots of personal
names down Hollies Road
named after local councillors
- Dr Hollies, Steventon,
Cranage Crescent (Dr
Cranage founded Old Hall
School), Clift Crescent (Clift
that.
A spokeswoman said:
“Abbey prides itself on offering
a very reliable and
personal service. Our boss
is always at hand to speak
to! No head office in a city
miles away, with a computer
that always seems to
say “no!”
She went on to add: “We
offer very competitive rates
and we won’t be beaten.
“We’re growing and
we’re at a new stage in
our journey, we have a
new shop opening here in
Madeley.”
What services can they
offer to local landlords
New Wellington book
from Allan Frost
Local author Allan Frost has
published a new book called
Wellington in the 1920s and
1930s. It consists of carefully
selected archival images of
this ancient market town between
the two world wars.
Many of the images are
seen for the first time ever
and they are all a fascinating
glimpse back to a time
of great political upheaval
and change, much brought
about by World War 1.
See the outsides and the
insides of shops that, for
generations, had served the
needs of Wellington and the
surrounding villages and
townships.
See the public services of
the area including the Wellington
UDC steam roller,
the horse-drawn fire engine,
acquired in 1909, and look
at the amazing first aerial
views of Wellington taken for
Aerofilms Ltd by former RAF
pilot Alan Cobham.
It is published by Fonthill
at £12.99 ISBN 978-1-78155-
YOUR
LETTERS
I
have grave concerns
because the great NHS,
which belongs to the
people, is being wrestled
from us.
Millions of pounds are
being wasted. Staff are not
treated properly, in fact the
whole service is badly run
by people buying into it for
profit.
Locally I believe our hospital
is under the biggest
threat yet. I can see why the
authorities want to gag our
MP’s and Civic leaders.
When we have been under
threat on previous occasions
they ran very good
campaigns for the people.
David Wright, MP for Telford
even took the case to Parliament.
This I believe was
16 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
responsible for us enjoying
the facilities we now have.
So why are some MPs,
Civic Leaders and wouldbe
MPs staying so quiet on
this issue on this threat now
facing us. Not to voice our
concerns is a betrayal of the
people of Telford.
I can inform the authorities
that if they wish to stop
David Wright or Kuldip Sohata
acting in the interests of
their consittuents they would
have to gag them and tie
them to a chair.
Here are some of the quotations
from past threats:
Andy Burnham, when
Health Secretary: “NHS
chiefs must take on board
the views of the residents.”
David Wright, MP for
Telford: “I’m going to fight
these proposals tooth and
nail.”
Mark Pritchard, MP for the
Wrekin: “I hope the ministers
will now listen to the overwhelming
opposition to any
plans now or in the future to
cut services or A&E services
from Telford.”
Councillor Eade, when
Council Leader for Telford,
moved a resolution in Council:
“This Council expresses
outrage at the continued
threats to services at PRH.”
The resolution was seconded
by Labour leader,
Councillor Keith Austin.
The prospective Tory candidate
for Telford on is web
site said: “I will fight to maintain
services at PRH.”
She now says MPs should
keep quiet and leave it to
others. What a turn round!
She presented a petition of
1,000 signatures regarding
car parking charges – I can
assure her that if she had
been petitioning to keep services
at Telford, I could have
got her that many signatures
in two hours.
What is needed is more
funds and better staffing for
our hospitals, after all Mr
The Wrekin’s
RON VOICES A&E CONCERNS
Ron Munt from Telford is concerned
about the escalating situation
regarding A&E at Princess Royal
Hospital in Telford. He writes
Covering Wellington, Telford and Shropshire
FREE WITH EVERY
WARDROBE
Our full width ‘Space Saver’
fitted by us within a day.
It is always a pleasure to
read the Wrekin News and in
particular the articles on railways.
However, one or two
little errors seem to creep in
from time to time and John
Talbot (bless him!) is guilty of
one in his last contribution.
‘Kings’ were not off limit
via Wellington, in fact they
hauled the Paddington to
Aberystwyth train which was
non-stop from Wolverhampton
low level to Shrewsbury,
it travelled through Wellington
of course via the middle
road. Prior to its approach
people on the station were
requested to keep well away
from the edge of the platforms
because of the down
draught it gave off.
During the time I was
shunting at Allscot Beet
Factory sidings I would see
this train on a daily basis.
The special occasions were
when it was headed by King
George V.
Pickles says ‘We are a rich
country’. Telford and Wrekin
Council have been cut to
the bone, so the authorities
can at least give us decent
hospital services.
There is, after all, a wellknown
saying ‘The wealth of
the nation depends on the
health of its workers.’
When the people of
Telford fought for our hospital
they did not leave it
to others but got off their
backsides, ran petitions and
campaigned for years, always
refusing to take ‘no’
for an answer. That is the
character and spirit of the
people of Telford.
So come on you MPs,
Civic leaders and prospective
candidates, show the
same spirit and stand up for
your constituents.
We are in even more danger
this time because the
Health Secretary having his
Madeley writes
again this month
about his love
of railways.
KINGS NOT OFF LIMIT
This engine was special
because it had a large ship
bell on the front and it was
always highly polished. On
the days that this engine
was running the signalman,
George Fewtrell, would call
me up into the box. ‘It’s left
Hollinswood’, he would say
and then a few minutes later
he would get the signal ‘train
on the line.’
We would both stand
by the open door, our eyes
glued to the track in the
distance, as far as we could
see. Then suddenly things
would start. The cutting at
Admaston would fill up with
steam billowing high into the
sky, there was just a slight interruption
as it passed under
the road bridge and then we
spotted the trains as it came
round the bend and down
the long straight towards us.
What a sight it was with
a full head of steam thundering
towards us. The bell
was as usual highly polished
and as it was approaching
the box we heard the slight
ting of the bell as the wind
caught it or perhaps we
thought we heard it, but it’s
a nice thought isn’t it
The train passed by almost
underneath us and as
we looked down the fireman
gave us a wave which we
acknowledged and almost
as quickly as she came, she
was gone in the distance.
The train would continue
to Shrewsbury and there
they would uncouple the
King and there would be
another engine ready to take
the train on towards its final
destination – Aberystwyth.

A family fruit picking day out
ONE BEAUTIFUL
spring morning at
the start of the fifties,
I looked out
from my bedroom window at
Sunnyside in Manse Road,
Hadley to see all the trees
and bushes covered in a
white sheen laid down overnight
by Jack Frost.
This pleasant site for me
sent mom and dad into a
huddle because it spelt disaster
for the early blossoming
damson trees at the bottom
of the garden. As spring
turned to summer the extent
of the damage was plain to
see as not a single fruit has
appeared on them.
Now, as everyone in Hadley
knew, there was no finer
meal than two doorsteps of
Harris’s finest loaf covered
with thickly spread real butter
and several spoonfuls of
real damson jam. By this
I mean jam made properly
with the stones and skin left
in and not a trace of additives
or preservatives. The
sort of jam you can now only
get from places like the WI
stall at the peerless Wellington
market.
In the days before the
word ‘healthy eating’ was
invented I used to race home
from school and devour tons
Derek Gambie continues his
intriguing story of growing up
in Hadley.
> Derek at 7 years old.
of this nectar and if it was a
cold winter’s afternoon we
had the extra pleasure of
toasting the bread in front
of a roaring fire and then
dribbling as we watched the
five knobs of butter slowly
melting on top of each slice.
I was distraught but mom
had a plan and as the autumn
fruit gathering season
approached, a pleading letter
was sent to Aunty Edie
and Uncle Fred, who lived
in a one up and one down
former toll house near Ticklerton
in south Shropshire. I
knew that they had a whole
row of damson trees in their
garden and unbelievably
didn’t like them. So, they
replied, we could have as
many as we could pick.
To help, mom recruited
Uncle Jim and Aunty Lal and
we set off in the two cars
after an early lunch. Uncle
Jim and the two nattering
sisters in his Austin 10 leading
the way and dad with me
and my two older sisters,
Beryl and Jean following in
our 1935 Y type Ford. A brief
stop off at the Pound Inn in
Leebotwood, for two pints
and two stouts for the adults
and off to Ticklerton.
After us kids did our duties
of fetching fresh water
from the well 100 yards away
and filling up the paraffin
lamps we joined the pickers
to help with the crop.
All went well until Uncle Jim
grossly over-estimated my
strength and gave me an upright
wooden ladder to hold
whilst he moved one of the
full baskets out of the way.
I couldn’t manage it and
it slowly fell over with me still
holding on. Although warnings
were shouted, my father
couldn’t get out of the way in
time and the ladder cracked
him on the head and he
slowly sank to the ground.
A small cut and a sore head
put him in a bad mood for
> Derek Gambie
the rest of the day but luckily
virtually all the harvesting
had been done.
We had a nice tea as
darkness fell before we
headed for the King’s Arms
in Cardington for a few consolation
pints for dad. We
kids managed to get a bag
of Smiths Crisps and a bottle
of Vimto each and after
what seemed like hours we
headed home.
Next day I took a mate
home with me after school
and at about five o’clock
his mum came to fetch
him. Mom was already jamming
the damsons and my
friend’s mom made the unfortunate
remark that there
was a glut this year and they
were selling them in Wellington
market for tuppence
a pound or five pounds for
eight pence.
Mom chewed on her lip
for a second or two and then
forgetting about the cost
of petrol and the excessive
drinks remarked: “Oh really!
Well of course we got ours
for nothing!”
Next month Derek talks
about ‘the crime of the century’.
P47s over the skies of Lawley
JOHN TALBOT spotted the
article on the air crash that
happened in Lawley Bank
back in 1944 and he has
his own childhood memories
of seeing these fantastic
aircraft over the Shropshire
skies. He writes.
Immediately I saw those
three P-47D USAAF fighters,
I knew that the 1944 mid-air
triple collision was in ‘The
News’ – again after 70 years.
However, for the first time
a date was noted. A fine
day, double summertime,
our local Montgomery Road
district lads were playing
cricket on ‘the tip’.
So familiar had we become
as P-47B ‘training’
fighters (Thunderbolts) filling
the local sky with engine
roar during mock combat,
that we only looked up
when a shattering double
18 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
mid-air collision sent three
of those P-47’s crashing to
earth.
From Atcham USAAF
airfield, newly arrived pilots
from the USA, would polish
their skills on the older models
of P47’s before moving
to squadrons in East Anglia
and Kent to support the ‘D’
Day landings with new P-
47D’s.
Astonished to see and
hear aerial mayhem, we saw
one plunge by the Wrekin
and soon after that the pilot
was seen coming to earth in
his parachute.
Simultaneously, two
stricken planes were seen
to plunge and the explosive
result, a couple of smoke
columns pointed us to the
Dawley Road, for that is
where, cricket suspended
for a while, we raced towards
on our bikes.
At Lawley Bank, a small
crowd, and local firemen
were ‘in action’ but I shall
never forget the sight of Wellington
UDC’s town clerk,
Mr Reuben Astley-Jones, assisting
with fire hoses from
the engine!
Smoke from the scattered
wreck wafted around and a
part of the roadside hedge
was burned away. For that
pilot his war was over.
Then I rode towards New
Hadley or Ketley, a field of
crop with a large swathe of it
burned was the other pilot’s
grave – that pilot died too.
Do you know, I can still
hear the awful mid-air crash
and noise and I wonder,
does anyone else recall that
fatal crunch
Great Wrekin News again
his great strength was that if he came across
someone more skilful than himself, he made
sure that they didn’t get passed him – one way
or another!”
Playing for the Princesses
WHILE I was playing
on stage
with the band I
was really struck
with a girl with lovely blonde
hair and beautiful dimples.
When I returned to Cosford
my mind was still thinking
about her and I was sure I
knew her from somewhere.
Se the weekend after that
when I was again playing
with the band, I made an
excuse to the band leader
and found myself asking her
for a dance. I also asked if I
could see her home and was
over the moon when she accepted.
I had a bit of a complex,
wondering if Linda (or
her parents) remembered
me and our family as pennyless
rough and ragged.
After this I got home every
time it was possible and
eventually invited her to tea,
before the gig with the Delphians
Band. To invite Linda
back to my house was a
problem as mother was not
at all house proud to put it
politely! So I had to pay my
sister Lilian to tidy the house
up and prepare some sandwiches.
A few months later
we were engaged.
Twelve months later on
August 26 1950, Linda and I
were married. The marriage
took place in the lovely little
village immediately under
Kinder Scout named Hayfield.
Our drum major from
the RAF Band came as one
of the guests, and the Delphians
Band formed the Guard
of Honour as we came out of
the church. They also played
for the dancing at our reception
afterwards.
Unsung heroes sought
Reading the local papers
it would appear that if you
serve one term as a Borough
councillor and are a
local school governor you
are likely to have roads
etc named after you. I am
sick of politicians being
honoured in this way when
there are hundreds of ordinary
people who have put
so much into the community
probably at their own
expense who are never
recognised for the work
they do unpaid, if we look
20 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
Ken Nelson continues his story
about his colourful life. He has
now completed his travels and
is in RAF Cosford.
Doreen Smith, a lifelong
friend of Linda’s was chief
bridesmaid and my sister Lillian
was also a bridesmaid.
My half-brother George was
an usher. As I had only got
five days leave from the RAF
we had our honeymoon in
Blackpool.
One night we went to the
Winter Gardens’ Ballroom
and were dancing round the
floor when someone shouted
out my name. I looked
on the stage and there was
Stan Butterworth, the guy
who has asked me for sax
lessons – he was playing
with the resident band.
When I arrived back at
Cosford Flt Lt Wallace was
leaving the band to be promoted
to Wing Commander
and start an RAF School
of Music at Uxbridge. This
turned out to be a huge
success. He also took Sgt
Ponsford with him, leaving
us with no sergeant and only
the drum major and myself
(two corporals) in charge.
However within a few days
our new bandmaster arrived,
Warrant Officer Rogers was
very different from WC Wallace.
He was a nice chap,
but he hadn’t got the musical
knowledge or the bearing
of a Wing Commander.
Overall it did me quite a
favour because he promoted
me to Band Sergeant.
Shortly after he took over
around Telford there is a lot
of this going on.
Time to stop, before this
honour is given to anyone
there needs to be some
sort of public consultation
let the people have a say.
Many politicians would be
overpaid if they collected
washers in pay.
In the Arleston Community
we are going to start
a scheme where we will
ask the people of Arleston
if they know someone
who deserves recognition
we had several demobs and
the replacements were still
on training. Luckily at the
time the RAF were being
presented with their Royal
Colour for the first time so
this took place in Hyde Park
with the massed bands of
the RAF.
The day before the King
was to present the Colour,
we had a dress rehearsal,
and the sun was blazing hot.
Quite a few of the troops
who were not used to standing
still for long periods with
the sun on their heads started
to faint and fall on their
new type six inch bayonets,
injuring themselves.
We patched everyone up
but the following day found
out that the King was ill and
his place would be taken by
Princess Elizabeth. We were
all stood to attention feeling
cold and miserable when a
sparkling Land Rover burst
onto the scene with two
of the most breath-taking
young ladies I had ever
witnessed. It was Princess
Great films and memories
I
am writing about the
cinemas in Wellington
in the ‘50s. There
was the Grand Theatre
in Tan Bank. Opposite was
Tan Bank fish and chip shop
for the work they put into
the Arleston Community
whether they live in Arleston
or not.
There are hundreds of
unsung “heroes” and we
want to know about them.
If you want to nominate
someone then get in touch
with D.Barnett 01952
244922 or Councillor Angela
McClements before next
August when a decision will
be made and a small award
made. D.L.Barnett Midfields
Arleston Telford TF1 2NA.
Bill Isaak writes again this issue
with his memories of the
cinemas in Wellington.
where we would call after the
film had finished in the evening,
and get some supper to
walk home with. The Grand
was later turned into a bingo
hall which was opened by
Bill Roach (Ken Barlow from
Coronation Street). A few
years later it was demolished
and all that was left standing
were two columns which
were at the bottom of the
steps. They used to display
pictures of films which were
playing that week. Tan Bank
fish and chip shop is still
open today.
Then there was the Town
Hall picture house in Market
Street which local residents
affectionately called
Elizabeth and her sister Princess
Margaret.
They were stood up holding
onto their hair and I
missed several notes before
I could gather myself. One of
‘the flea pit’. Very often the
films would break down and
people would shout ‘put a
shilling in the meter!’
The cinema probably still
best remembered today was
The Clifton, later becoming
Dunelms but hopefully to be
turned back into a cinema in
the near future. In the Clifton
in the ‘50s, there was the
Saturday morning club for
children. For sixpence, you
would have a feature film,
cartoons and a serial every
week like Flash Gordon etc.
I remember my mother
taking me to the pictures in
the fifties. She would take
me to the Clifton for the
Saturday afternoon matinee
the most wonderful sights I
can ever recall and one that
I will never forget.
and then she would take
me to the Grand Theatre for
the evening film. Again we
would call to Tan Bank fish &
chip shop for our supper to
walk home with.
Great films and great
memories in those days.
Ed. Bill, thanks for writing
in again with your memories.
Flash Gordon was a great favourite
with everyone. Each
episode he would be left at
the mercy of Ming the Merciless
and we would leave
the cinema wondering how
on earth he would extricate
himself from his latest dilemma.
He always managed
it though! Buster Crabbe
played the part of Flash Gordon
and although the films
look very ‘hammy’ now, they
brought us great enjoyment
back then at the Saturday
Morning Clifton Club.

My thoughts on
Wellington Market
My writings today
are not of me
or my past life,
more of just a
few months ago, and some
of my thoughts made me
realize just how little we all
appreciate things and happenings
around us and in
our lives, as a result it became
obvious that I should
share them with you.
Now to begin, you all
know just how I love our little
town of Wellington, and
as most of you also know
that although I was not
born here it is almost seventy
years since moving
here from the Peak District
in Derbyshire and from that
moment on I have learned
how to love and respect it’s
history to present day.
Now at least two every
week I jump on the bus to
go into Wellington and on
these two days I visit the
‘market’ and it is here that
I would like to share my
thoughts, I imagine that I
am wandering through the
market and the stall holders
then come into view,
22 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
by Rona Harris
and I then realized what
hard working people they
all are, they are always very
helpful and do try very hard
to get whatever we all wish
to buy , that is if they don’t
stock it already.
Now I would like to
mention just a few of their
names etc., and they always
have a friendly smile
for me so here goes we
have Mark and Dot (Aladdin’s
cave) Stuart (Curtains),
Rob (Books), Malcolm
(Rugs), Rajinder Singh
Mattu (Worktops), Brian
Smith (Electrics), Dom
and Garry (Bakery), Ray
and David (Pictures and
frames), (Brenda bags and
purses), Ellen (Cosmetics),
Pauline and Suzanne (haberdashery),
Patsy (Candles
and gifts), Marie (Pies and
cold meats).
There are four entrances
to the Market, and we
have four shops here,
Ken Francis (Butcher) he
has beautifully presented
Carrying on from my
thoughts of Wellington Market,
I would like to pass on
a few of my memories of the
Clifton Cinema, Rona writes.
I will always remember
when I first ‘laid eyes’ on this
beautiful place we never had
a cinema anything like this in
the villages near to mine in
Derbyshire, and I fell in love
with the Clifton for the start.
I loved going upstairs to
watch the films but these
were the most expensive
seats in the house and were
priced at two shillings and
ninepence and two shillings
and threepence respectively,
(needless to say I could not
always afford these “posh”
seats) and downstairs they
were priced at one shilling
and ninepence and one shilling,
but those were right at
the front of the house, and all
the ‘kids used to get in them.
I have no doubt that many
of you will remember when
our currency was totally British
and worth every penny,
halfpenny and farthing.
I have watched some fantastic
films in the Clifton and
yes! I will admit in my very
much younger days had
some lovely “distractions”
too.
You know, it was always
so cosy and warm and had
that smell like most cinemas
it was something like a
pleasant disinfectant.
It is such a pity that it will
never again hold that wonderful
magic and total “wrap
around” pleasure that it gave
meats and pies, and has
also won a trophy, which is
the Bernard Price Perpetual
Challenge Trophy. We
have Alan and Lisa (Camera
shop), Steve with Dawn
and Jeannie Vegetables),
and Sat and all his staff in
the Post Office.
All of thse people are
very helpful fo me and I
can’t help thinking that
they probably do get fedup
with hearing my ‘gob’
but never seem to really
mind and to my knowledge
they never make a sudden
grab for ‘earplugs’ when
they see and hear me approaching.
I do apologize if I have
missed many names, but
I do appreciate everyone.
I am showing a few
photo’s of just some of the
market staff, who always
kindly and pleasantly cater
for “OUR” every need and
it is much appreciated by
me and I have no doubts
with all of you too.
Memories of the Clifton
to me, even after standing
outside in a queue which
felt like ‘forever’ to get into
the second house showing
and that would be on a cold
winter’s night too.
I must add that unless
you have done all of these
things, you will never understand
what I mean.
I have taken just one sad
and solitary photograph of
my used to be lovely Clifton
Cinema, and it fills me with
such sorrow to see it now,
and to wonder what on earth
it will
IT’S ABOUT ten miles
Marina Higgins on
the relatively short trip to
see what Much Wenlock is
all about.
And she returned absolutely
full of praise. “It’s a
lovely, traditional market
enthused.
She went on to say:
“There’s a fantastic old
Much Wenlock was a
well-established town before
the Doomsday Book
even became a mere glint
in the eye of King William,
when the town was called
Wenloch. There was a famous
priory (the ruins are
open to public viewing) and
Much Wenlock is acknowledged
as the home of the
Shropshire Olympics, forerunner
of the Much Wenlock
Olympics and also of the
International Olympics. (ED-
ITOR: Trivia fans will be delighted
to learn that there’s a
tangential twinning link of a
sort between Much Wenlock
and the Wrekin News area
as the second Shropshire
Olympics were not staged
in Much Wenlock, they were
actually staged in Wellington
in 1861. (The first Much
Wenlock Olympics being
staged in Much Wenlock in
1850.) And there’s a link to
another part of the Wrekin
News area, Hadley, where
the last Olympics staged by
the National Olympian Association
were staged in 1883.
But that’s enough trivia for
the moment!)
There’s also a museum
in Much Wenlock which has
been recently refurbished
which tells the story of the
town, the local geology and
of the Much Wenlock Olympics.
THE DOCTOR IS IN
OVER 50 local GP
practices have
launched Shropshire’s
GP Federation
to cut costs and boost
patient care.
The GP Federation for
Shropshire and Telford and
Wrekin was launched by
GPs and practice managers,
at Shrewsbury Town FC.
Dr Russell Muirhead, federation
chairman said it will
let practice staff dedicate
their time to delivering care,
cutting back time spent on
admin.
He said every local practice
had joined the not-forprofit
federation as they all
wanted “to ensure patients
receive the best care and
service”.
He said: “The federation
will have a range of support
services allowing practices
to focus on delivering more
care closer to home which
should result in savings, with
> Delegates at a recent meeting of the Federation.
money saved reinvested in
the practices and into services
for the benefit of patients.
“It will be the patients who
see and feel the improvement
to their health care
services.”
Described as a “huge culture
change” for GP practices,
Dr Muirhead said the federation,
based at Shropdoc’s
Shrewsbury HQ, would offer
one point of contact with
the Clinical Commissioning
Groups for services, letting
staff care for patients rather
products or services.
Ian Winstanley, CEO of
Shropdoc and acting federation
CEO, said GP practice
budgets were being cut, but
hoped the federation would
enable practices to enhance
their services despite the
NHS financial position.
Craig Wallace, manager of
the GP Federation for Shropshire
and Telford, said money
saved would be re-invested
in the local health economy,
crucial for its future.
“Some GP practices are
looking at a 20% deficit in
income so the federation will
act as a support network to
ensure patients get the service
they deserve,” he said.
The federation will bid
for local services put out by
the clinical commissioning
groups or public health and
if successful the federation
would offer such services to
all practices within the federation.
One service already
being run by the federation is
Help 2 Slim.
Services which could be
shared under the federation
include receptions, telephony
triage and virtual back
office administration and
support.
GP federations across
the UK have won contracts
worth millions of pounds to
offer community services
such as diabetes care in the
community.

Invisalign clear braces
£500 OFF!
Are you one of the millions
of adults in need
of adult braces who are
unhappy, self-conscious
or even embarrassed of
your smile
Many adults spend their
entire lives covering their
mouths when they laugh,
smile or talk. They rule out
braces because they do not
want to wear adult metal
braces for years or they are
concerned that other corrective
teeth straightening
procedures could be too
invasive or too expensive.
Invisalign clear braces are
designed to treat a wide
range of straightening issues,
from minor tooth
movements to more complex
cases.
We are pleased to announce
as one of Shropshire’s
largest providers of
Invisalign clear braces we
have been asked to provide
an open day on the clear
brace system. We will be
offering up to £500 off the
braces, FREE teeth whitening
and 0% finance up to 12
months if required on this
day only.
The open day will give
you the chance to book in
for a free Invisalign consultation
with myself and our
local Invisalign representative.
At this appointment
we can discuss the different
Invisalign treatment options
with you and show you, with
my own animation what can
be achieved. The representative
and I have both had
Invisalign and are happy to
answer any questions you
may have on the day.
What is Invisalign
Invisalign can be worn
simply and easily and fit
into your daily routine without
any fuss or embarrassment.
There are no metal
wires or brackets, so no
– Wycherley’s dental practice
open day Saturday 14th June
need to worry about mouth
irritations as the aligners
are comfortable to wear
and can be easily removed
for eating, drinking, brushing
and flossing as normal.
Your treatment consists of
a series of nearly invisible,
removable aligners that you
change every two weeks
for the next set of aligners.
Each aligner is individually
manufactured for your teeth,
and your teeth only. As you
replace each aligner, your
teeth will move – little by
little, week by week – until
they have straightened to
the final position.
You get to see a virtual
3D treatment plan (Clin-
Check© treatment plan).
This shows the series of
movements your teeth will
go through over the course
of the treatment allowing
you to see upfront what
your teeth are expected to
look like at the end of the
treatment. From the results
of the ClinCheck treatment
plan, your custom-made,
clear aligners are produced
especially for you.
Invisalign aligners are
nearly invisible. No one
may even notice that you’re
wearing these virtually invisible
aligners, making Invisalign
a seamless fit with
your lifestyle and day-today
interactions with others.
Invisalign aligners are
removable giving you the
flexibility to eat and drink
what you want during treatment
by simply removing
the aligners. And you can
also remove the aligners
to brush and floss as you
normally would for fresh
breath and to maintain good
oral hygiene. Some people
may experience temporary,
minor discomfort for a few
days, at the beginning of
each new stage of treatment
when they insert a
new aligner. This is normal
and is typically described
as a feeling of pressure. It
is a sign that the aligners
are working – moving your
teeth gradually, helping you
to achieve the final results.
This discomfort typically
goes away in a couple of
days.
Trust awarded gold for health
WREKIN Housing
rewarded for its
commitment to
health and safety by winning
the Gold Medal Award
at RoSPA’s Occupational
Health and Safety Awards
2014.
The Gold Medal Award is
presented to organisations
showing long-term commitment
to improving health
and safety management, and
employee engagement regarding
to health and safety.
The award can only be presented
to organisations who
achieved five previous continuous
Gold Awards. The award
will be presented at the annual
scheme run by the Royal
Society for the Prevention of
Accidents (RoSPA) during a
ceremony at the National Exhibition
Centre in May.
The RoSPA awards, dating
back 58 years, recognise
commitment to continuous
improvement in accident
and ill health prevention at
work. Through the scheme,
open to businesses and organisations
of all types and
sizes from across the UK
and overseas, judges consider
Telford & Wrekin Council’s library service is launching a new online
lending service for virtual and audio books.
The new service is being launched on April 23 to celebrate World
Book Night. Members of the public will be able to choose from more
than 500 ebook titles and download them for free.
The service is compatible with a number of e-readers including
Sony Reader, Nook, Kobo, iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire (but not
the basic Kindle).
It can be accessed from home or using the council’s free Wifi
service in selected libraries and other council buildings.
Library members can choose titles they wish to read and download
them for up to 21 days each by visiting www.telford.gov.uk/
across the board. Organisations
that gain recognition
for their health and safety
management systems such
as The Wrekin Housing
Trust, contribute to a collective
raising of the bar for
other organisations to aspire
to, and we offer them our
congratulations.”
Tim Munro, Organisational
Development Consultant
at The Wrekin Housing Trust
said: “We are delighted to
receive a top award from
RoSPA for the fifth year in
a row. It’s testament to all
the hard work and commitment
by Trust employees in
maintaining high standards
of health and safety.”
Library service launches
online lending service
libraries
All titles can be borrowed and reserved for free and loans automatically
expire so there are no overdue charges.
New ebooks are being added to the collection all the time and
the catalogue has a variety of fiction and non-fiction titles to suit a
variety of tastes.
Mayfield House
Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for Libraries, said: “This
is a logical extension to the services offered by our libraries and
means people can access e-books and audio books at no charge.
A
group of talented
youngsters will represent
The Wrekin and
the UK at an international
street dancing competition
thanks to sponsorship
from a local firm.
The Havoc Street Dance
Crew is made up of dancers
aged between eight and
ten, all from the Telford area,
who are preparing to jet off to
Germany for May’s European
Street Dance Championships.
Caroline Douglas, a volunteer
parent with the group,
said the trip wouldn’t have
been possible without help
from local firm Digiland, who
donated £1,000 to Havoc and
its partner group, Recess.
The money went towards
training materials, including
new outfits which the dancers
will wear onstage at the championships.
Digiland’s director, Jaydee
Park, presented the group with
the new outfits at the company’s
HQ in Stafford Park,
wishing them well for the competition.
Mr Park said: “The Havoc
and Recess groups performed
at a family fun day we held
last summer. We were so impressed
we wanted to support
them.
“It was wonderful to see
them again and hear how
the sponsorship’s helped the
groups develop. It’s a pleasure
to know we’ve helped them to
represent the country at the
international championships.
Havoc and Recess are part
of the Street Dance Telford
group, which trains at the Ace
Martial Arts Studio, Oakengates.
Digiland is based at Stafford
Park 12, Telford, and sells
refurbished Samsung products,
plus commercial LED
lighting. For more information
ENCOURAGE BEES
Bees and butterflies are an
important part of the natural
plants and trees and so
are friends to both gardeners
What can we do to encourage
them in our gardens
Pop along to the gardening
buy your seeds from and
check out their selection of
like a sunny aspect
and provide instant colour
for pots, window boxes, patio
Pelargonium fan Baroness
I see Perlargoniums my
Great to grow in pots,
A quintessential English
country estate is thrown into
chaos following the murder
of eccentric inventor Sir
Claud Amory, and the theft of
his new earth shattering formula.
Arriving at the estate
a potent brew of despair,
treachery, and deception
amid the estate’s occupants.
That man is Hercule Poi-
that England has to offer.
His unlucky tenants include
Ruth Jones, an administrator
at the university, Alan, a
who is studying town and
country planning. Between
them, Alan and Philip are the
usually at the expense of
his dignity and standing in
the eyes of Miss Jones, with
whom he is hopelessly and
> AFC Telford United players celebrate in style.
WATSON’S
TELFORD
WIN TITLE
ON LAST DAY
Manager Liam Watson has produced a remarkable
achievement as AFC Telford United are crowned
champions of the Skrill Conference North.
Watson began the campaign retaining just
two players from last season’s disappointing
relegation from the Conference premier.
FROM that he has
built a team to
sweep aside the opposition
and bring a
first league title to the area
for over sixty years. Watson’s
knowledge of Conference
North football was key
to the success. His decision
to start the campaign with a
group of players of whom
many had experienced success
at this level was vital.
And perhaps his managerial
acumen was most apparent
with the timing and
quality of his recruiting of
reinforcements. The acquisition
of Mike Grogan and
Shaun Whalley in particular
proving to be inspired.
But things were tight as
the title battle headed toward
its conclusion with Telford
and North Ferriby both failing
to take their chances to
pull away at the head of the
table. And so the tussle went
into a final dramatic week.
A tense eight days began
as the Bucks played
host to Gloucester City. With
just three games to go, and
North Ferriby United heading
Telford on goal difference,
three points were vital
for Watson’s men. But as
has been the case so often
this season the Bucks conceded
the first goal as City’s
Jake Gosling scored.
Shaun Whalley led the
fight back as his surging run
into the area ended with him
being illegally nudged off the
ball in the box. The resulting
penalty was then tucked into
the corner of the net by Adam
Farrell. Telford continued
to press and were handed a
golden opportunity to take
the lead just after the break
as they were awarded another
penalty. Once again
Farrell stepped up but this
time his unconvincing effort
was saved.
The Bucks showed their
character and immediately
Lez Dean brings
you the latest
news from the New
Bucks Head.
got back on top creating a
number of openings. It was
substitute Sean Clancy who
was to prove to be the match
winner with twelve minutes
to go as he broke into the
area and bundled the ball in
from close range.
With North Ferriby matching
Telford’s result it was
imperative for Watson to see
his side produce a positive
outcome from their visit to
Solihull two days later. But
things did not look good as
the Moors raced into a two
goal lead. First Reece Fleet
found himself in space and
lashed the ball past a cruelly
exposed Young and then a
defensive mix up let in Junior
English to finish well with an
overhead kick.
Gradually though the
Bucks began to take control
and create chances and they
pulled a goal back mid-way
through the first half.
A Whalley corner from the
> Sean Clancy leads the celebrations in the changing rooms
> Liam Watson and Dom Morley.
right caused confusion in
the box and amid the mayhem
the ball was headed
into his own net by a Moors
defender.
Telford were back in the
game and should have been
level just before the break as
Farrell stepped up to take
advantage of a rather fortuitous
penalty award. But Jasbir
Singh in the home goal
guessed right and gathered
comfortably. Telford continued
to play with urgency
and could have bagged
a number of goals in the
second period, Tony Gray
and Whalley with particularly
good chances.
Fortunately, as has often
been the case this season,
Grogan was the man on the
spot to scramble home following
a corner. Coupled
with the news that North Ferriby
had lost at Boston a
point was enough to give
the Bucks the edge in the
title race, and they now knew
that a win in their final game
would be enough to see
them take the title.
A crowd of over three
thousand seven hundred
turned up against Gainsborough
Trinity hoping to see
Telford crowned as champions.
Trinity proved limited opposition
in truth as they were
easily swept aside. A hard
working United soon took
the initiative with Farrell denied
by an offside flag before
Grogan got the all important
opener on eighteen minutes,
the former Cammell Laird
man was on the spot to slam
home from close in.
A second goal came early
after the break as a marauding
Shaun Whalley was
brought down in the box
allowing Clancy to stroke
home from the penalty spot.
Determined not to let
the title slip Watson’s men
chased everything.
Then in the final minute
Whalley broke away to score
a third, and now the party
really could begin.
Joyous scenes followed
as the final whistle blew with

Wellington have been West Indian allrounder in a cricket, establish themselves
popular Neil Edwards, who
will be aiming to build on
his 654 runs at an average
batting contribution will be
crucial after the high profile
departure of Joe Clarke. Byram
said, ‘Joe’s going was
completely understandable.
He has re-joined his native
The bowling department
CPC DEADLINE LOOMS!
46 / www.wrekinnews.co.uk
Local entrepreneur Paola
Armstrong has set up a business
specifically to help local companies
meet their important Driver
CPC training obligations - and a
deadline for many of them is just
months away.
HIGHMEAD Training
Services of Wellington
specialises
in assisting the
transport industry to meet
the Driver Certificate of Professional
Competence legislation
that covers all professional
LGV and PCV drivers.
“One of the key points of
the regulations is that is it
mandatory for all new and
existing professional drivers
to undertake 35 hours of
training every five years to
ensure their licence is valid.
This means that there is a
large number of local small
and medium sized businesses
whose drivers only
have until September 2014
to complete their required
training,” says Paola.
Paola established Highmead
Training Services to
help and whilst there are
other training centres in
the area, Paola feels that
Highmead can offer something
unique. Naturally her
courses are approved by the
Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic
Training (JAUPT) - the
authority in this sector - but
she offers a good deal more.
“We’re very flexible when
it comes to arranging training
dates and venues - offering
training both at weekends
and during the week
to suit busy local companies
and individual drivers,”
she says. “Our flexibility
is important given the narrow
time frame between now
and September to complete
periodic training.”
Highmead Training Services’
courses are also interactive
and welcoming.
They give participants the
opportunity to enjoy professional
training. Indeed a
number of local companies
have already commended
Paola on the delivery and
content of courses. She
has also received a glowing
course audit report following
an inspection visit to one of
the courses held in January
2014 in Telford.
So, with time marching
on to September, Paola is
encouraging local companies
and individual drivers
to act now and ensure their
drivers get the training they
Lucy bids for Pothole cash
Lucy Allan, Telford’s Parliamentary
Candidate, has
today welcomed new Government
funding for pothole
repairs and urged Telford
and Wrekin Council to bid
for support.
The £168 million Pothole
Fund, announced in
the 2014 Budget, has today
opened for bids from councils,
with applications closing
next month.
The funding is enough to
repair more than three million
potholes across Britain,
and comes on top of £10
billion already being given to
councils in England for local
roads maintenance between
2010 and 2021.
Local authorities who get
funding will have to sign a
pothole pledge setting out
clearly how many potholes
> Lucy Allen
they will fix by March 2015
so that local communities
can have confidence that action
will be taken.
Lucy Allan commented:
“This is a great opportunity
to improve the roads
in Telford and deal with the
blight of potholes.
“Now Telford and Wrekin
Council needs to step up
and bid for this money.
“Investing in Britain’s
roads and infrastructure is
a key part of the Conservatives’
long-term economic
plan to secure a better future
for Britain. By fixing Britain’s
> Paola Armstrong
roads the Conservatives are
supporting local businesses,
and making life that bit
easier for the hardworking
people in Telford who rely on
them to get around.”
