Master's Degree and Ph.D.
Degree Programs
\Programs introduction\
Master's Program: Students are required to complete
the curriculum between 2-3 years, fulfill the
designated credits, complete the master's thesis and
defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful
graduates will receive a graduation certificate along
with the Master's degree, according to the regulation
of the Degree Committee.
Doctorate Program: Students are required to
complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in
normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number
of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral
thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts.
Students with bachelor’s degree pursuing PhD
degree in subjects of sciences or continuous program
that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies,
their study period at Peking University is normally 5
years. Successful graduates will receive a graduation
certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the
regulation of the Degree Committee.
Note that there are only full-time courses offered
for international students currently.
\Application prerequisites\
Master's program: Applicants must be non-Chinese
citizens with a valid passport, under the age of 40,
have attained a bachelor's degree.
Doctorate program: Applicants must be non-
Chinese citizens with a valid passport, under the
age of 45, have attained a master's degree. Students
with bachelor’s degree could apply for PhD program
in subjects of sciences or continuous program that
involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.

Fill in the application form and
submit and also print a hardcopy
for reference.
Submit Application Materials and
Application Fee to the PKU
Foreign Students Office.
Foreign Students Office
will check and verify the
submitted application
materials.
Unsuccessful
Application Materials will be passed on to
the relevant subject Department. Application
materials will be re-verified and if successful
invited to interview.
Attend Department Interview.
Successful
Within the specified
application deadline
re-submit the missing
application materials.
Departments to provide interview
arrangements before the end of March.

the names of successful candidates accepted to their

\Application materials\
1. Peking University Application Form for International
Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph
fixed. Please visit http://isao.pku.edu.cn/ooirr, fill in the
application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for
reference.
2. A personal resume (800 words for master program, 1500
words for doctorate program, must be in Chinese.) The
format of the resume can be downloaded at www.oir.pku.edu.
cn
3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students
expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating
expected graduation date), must be original documents or
certified copies either in Chinese or English
4. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the
present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must
be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or
English
5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The
referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic
title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your
recent academic work. The format of the recommendation
letter must be original documents either in Chinese or
English. The format of the reference letters can be downloaded
at www.oir.pku.edu.cn
6. A copy of your HSK results:
Candidates for Subjects of Sciences: HSK level 6
or above (or new HSK level 5, over 180 points) is
required;
Candidates for Subjects of Humanities: HSK level
8 or above (or new HSK level 5, over 210 points) is
required;
Candidates for Subjects of the Department of
Chinese Language and Literature: HSK level 9
or above (or new HSK level 6, over 180 points) is
required;
Note: For the requirements of language proficiency for
English-taught programs, please refer to the related program
information.
7. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic
publications and any other original achievement in your field
8. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must
be ordinary)
9. Other materials required by the specific school or
department you apply to
Note: Two copies of all application materials are required,
one original and one duplicate. Please hand in personally
or sent them by post to International Students Division
of Peking University (The envelope must be marked
‘Application for Graduate Admission’). The application
materials would not be returned.
