Master's Degree and Ph.D.<br />
Degree Programs<br />
\Programs introduction\<br />
Master's Program: Students are required to complete<br />
the curriculum between 2-3 years, fulfill the<br />
designated credits, complete the master's thesis and<br />
defend it in front of a panel of experts. Successful<br />
graduates will receive a graduation certificate along<br />
with the Master's degree, according to the regulation<br />
of the Degree Committee.<br />
Doctorate Program: Students are required to<br />
complete the curriculum between 4-6 years (in<br />
normal circumstances), fulfill the designated number<br />
of credits, conduct research, complete the doctoral<br />
thesis and defend it in front of a panel of experts.<br />
Students with bachelor’s degree pursuing PhD<br />
degree in subjects of sciences or continuous program<br />
that involves postgraduate and doctoral studies,<br />
their study period at Peking University is normally 5<br />
years. Successful graduates will receive a graduation<br />
certificate with the doctoral degree, according to the<br />
regulation of the Degree Committee.<br />
Note that there are only full-time courses offered<br />
for international students currently.<br />
\Application prerequisites\<br />
Master's program: Applicants must be non-Chinese<br />
citizens with a valid passport, under the age of 40,<br />
have attained a bachelor's degree.<br />
Doctorate program: Applicants must be non-<br />
Chinese citizens with a valid passport, under the<br />
age of 45, have attained a master's degree. Students<br />
with bachelor’s degree could apply for PhD program<br />
in subjects of sciences or continuous program that<br />
involves postgraduate and doctoral studies.<br />

\Application materials\<br />
1. Peking University Application Form for International<br />
Students (Master and Ph.D. Programs) with a photograph<br />
fixed. Please visit http://isao.pku.edu.cn/ooirr, fill in the<br />
application form and submit, then print a hardcopy for<br />
reference.<br />
2. A personal resume (800 words for master program, 1500<br />
words for doctorate program, must be in Chinese.) The<br />
format of the resume can be downloaded at www.oir.pku.edu.<br />
cn<br />
3. Graduation certificate and degree diploma (Students<br />
expecting to graduate should provide an official letter stating<br />
expected graduation date), must be original documents or<br />
certified copies either in Chinese or English<br />
4. Official transcripts of your academic achievement up to the<br />
present, including courses taken and standard achieved, must<br />
be original documents or certified copies either in Chinese or<br />
English<br />
5. Two recommendation letters from your referees. The<br />
referees should be professors or persons with relevant academic<br />
title. At least one of them should have knowledge of your<br />
recent academic work. The format of the recommendation<br />
letter must be original documents either in Chinese or<br />
English. The format of the reference letters can be downloaded<br />
at www.oir.pku.edu.cn<br />
6. A copy of your HSK results:<br />
Candidates for Subjects of Sciences: HSK level 6<br />
or above (or new HSK level 5, over 180 points) is<br />
required;<br />
Candidates for Subjects of Humanities: HSK level<br />
8 or above (or new HSK level 5, over 210 points) is<br />
required;<br />
Candidates for Subjects of the Department of<br />
Chinese Language and Literature: HSK level 9<br />
or above (or new HSK level 6, over 180 points) is<br />
required;<br />
Note: For the requirements of language proficiency for<br />
English-taught programs, please refer to the related program<br />
information.<br />
7. Table of contents and abstracts of your academic<br />
publications and any other original achievement in your field<br />
8. One photocopy of your valid passport (passport type must<br />
be ordinary)<br />
9. Other materials required by the specific school or<br />
department you apply to<br />
Note: Two copies of all application materials are required,<br />
one original and one duplicate. Please hand in personally<br />
or sent them by post to International Students Division<br />
of Peking University (The envelope must be marked<br />
‘Application for Graduate Admission’). The application<br />
materials would not be returned.<br />
