ATHLETIC FACILITIES AT THE MOUNT
The Mount provides its students with athletic fields and the
Harrington Center, a modern two-level student union with a
running track, gym, fitness center, and food court. During the
2003-2004 academic year, the Mount began its Campus Expansion
Plan, which includes athletic fields to accommodate more Mount
teams on campus for practice and home games.
The Mount’s East Fields on Delhi Road, which have been the
home field for women’s soccer, have been expanded into a game
field and running track with seating for up to 2,400 spectators. The
new Sports Complex gives the Mount Lions’ football team its first
home field on campus since 1990. It also provides a home field for
women’s soccer, men’s soccer and lacrosse teams for men (2007)
and women (2009). The track serves the Mount’s track & field
teams and additional facilities house the Mount’s academic program
in athletic training, as well as locker rooms and concessions. The
Campus Expansion Plan also included the renovation of nearby
College property into practice fields. The Lions’ softball team began
playing home games at the new River Road softball field in 2007.
2
The Mount Lions’ baseball team plays home games at Midland
Field, one of Cincinnati’s finest baseball facilities for teams and
spectators.
The Harrington Center, which opened in 1998, contains two full
courts for Lions volleyball and basketball as well as the full range of
Mount intramural teams. The Harrington Center also features a
specially surfaced indoor running track; courts for racquetball,
squash and walleyball; fitness center; weight training; athletic
training; and locker facilities.
The Mount’s west campus field, the J. Page Hayden Athletic
Field, is the location for the Mount’s field events during track &
field meets and is a practice field for the Lions’ Roar Marching
Band. The Mount also provides lighted tennis courts for intercollegiate
and intramural teams.
The Mount men’s golf team’s home course is Miami Whitewater
Forest Golf Course in Harrison, Ohio. The course is a par-72,
6,808-yards course with a rating of 72.3 and a slope of 125.

MOUNT ATHLETICS DIRECTOR
Steve Radcliffe
Steve Radcliffe enters his 14th year as the
Lions’ athletic director for the 2008-2009
school year, and he looks forward to another
outstanding season of athletics at the Mount.
The Lions’ volleyball team finished in a tie for
first place in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference last fall while the Lions football
team finished as runner-ups in the HCAC
regular season and qualified to their fourth
straight NCAA Division III playoffs. Women’s soccer also advanced
to the HCAC Semifinals while the men’s soccer team enjoyed their
best season to date, narrowly missing qualifying to the Conference
Tournament. The women’s tennis team finished with seven wins,
their most since the 1997 season. The Lions’ wrestling team finished
13-5-1 in duals, including an 11-1-1 mark against Division III
schools, and ended the season ranked 21st in the country. The
baseball team won the HCAC regular season, and advanced as the
top seed and host to the Conference Tournament while the softball
team qualified to the HCAC Tournament and played in the
championship game, losing in extra innings.
In addition, there were plenty of other highlights, both individually
and team-wise, for the Mount’s athletic programs in 2007-2008.
Radcliffe, who oversees 21 athletic programs at the Mount, has
long been a part of the sports programs at the College. A retired
athletic trainer, Radcliffe began his athletic training career in 1976
and was hired to implement the Mount’s first academic program for
athletic training in 1989. In addition, Radcliffe has been the Lions’
head athletic trainer, working with athletes from all the intercollegiate
sports, as well as teaching athletic training at the College.
Radcliffe, who received his bachelor’s degree in 1978 and his
master’s in physical education in 1981 from Miami University
(Ohio), became the Mount’s athletic director in 1995. Upon
entering the position, Radcliffe stressed the importance of upholding
the College’s stellar reputation of academics and athletics as a
positive
influence in student life and development at the Mount.
Steve and his wife, Darlene, have two children, Victoria and
Michael. The Radcliffes live in Delhi.
COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH
2008 SEASON OUTLOOK
After years of dominating play against conference and regional
opponents, winning every HCAC Tournament they’ve ever been a
part of, and recording multiple season’s of 25 to 30 wins, the Lions
slipped last season into areas to which they were not accustomed.
With a strong core of returning players back holding that memory
of a frustrating season, and an influx of promising first-year players
added to the roster this fall, Mount Head Coach Michele Benoit
and her staff are looking to get back to their old ways in 2008.
The Lions had won the HCAC Tournament Championship from
1998-2006, earning an automatic bid to the first round of the
NCAA Division III Tournament. The Mount is 88-3 all-time in
HCAC matches.
“2007 was a difficult year,’’ Benoit states. “Looking on the bright
side, however, I believe that the returning players will use the
disappointment and bitterness of last season to propel them further
than we have in a long time.”
The season did have some high points for the Lions, as they
posted a 20-17 record - their 11th straight winning season. They
also shared the HCAC regular season title with a 7-1 mark and
competed in the HCAC Tournament Championship match. In
early October the Mount won the Fredonia State Invitational
Tournament. In addition the team saw many players capture
individual awards and earn accolades throughout the season.
“Winning the regular season was important to us in that we knew
we had a good team and that we could win some big matches,’’
Benoit adds. “We had our chances in the conference finals (a 3-1
loss to Hanover) but Hanover was the better team that day.
I can’t say we’re complacent about winning in the conference
regularly because we know everyone wants to beat us. Too many
times in 2007 we beat ourselves which is never good when you are
the team with the target on your back year after year.”
The Lions lost three senior players to graduation – Becky Breetz,
Jessica Beck and Heather Bailey – and had one other starting player
transfer. Breetz was a First Team All-HCAC honoree, First Team
All-Region selection and Honorable Mention All-America last
season.
“Graduation is always a struggle for every coach and the good
teams and coaches adjust,’’ Benoit says. “I think our recruiting class
is a good one and with two transfers added we will be a better team
in many ways. I hope we’ll be faster and in better volleyball condition.
We have much needed depth at nearly each position.”
Leading the way for the Mount this fall will be a strong group of
upperclassmen who have been with the team their entire college
careers. Senior setter Katie Playko, a 2007 HCAC First-Team
selection, has started three seasons, while classmates Caitlin Sargent,
a front line player, Julie Schumacher, a defensive specialist/libero,
and Sarah Dunn, who plays numerous positions, are all back for
their fourth seasons. Junior Anna Richter, a Second Team
All-Conference winner last season, provides strong all-around play
from her outside hitter spot, while fellow juniors Jamie Cooper, a
libero/defensive specialist and outside hitter Casey Waldman are also
back this season. This is the third season of play with the Lions for
both Richter and Cooper. Other returners this season are sophomore
setter Lyndsey Waldman and sophomore middle hitter Jen Fawns.
Richter was second on the team last season in kills (466) and digs
(456). Playko led the Mount with 1,383 assists, was second with 36
service aces and fourth in digs. Sargent had 318 kills and a solid
.277 hitting percentage along with 68 blocks. Cooper led the Lions
with 49 service aces and added a team-high 628 digs.
Benoit is also expecting a lot of the team’s group of first-year
players, including transfers Jamie Grauvogel, a sophomore outside
hitter, and sophomore right-side/middle hitter Jess Gadberry.
Freshmen Leah Cole, a setter, Kat Roedig, a right-side/middle hitter,
and Alli Wilson, an outside hitter, round out the Lions’ roster.
Benoit feels the team will have good net skills, especially among
Richter, Sargent, Playko and Grauvogel. She expects her squad to be
a terminating offensive team and a good blocking team. Eliminating
unforced errors and improving in a few others are high on the
Lions’ veteran coaches’ wish list for this fall.
“We need to be able to adjust to unforeseen changes that others
team present us,’’ Benoit says. “I want us to be as flexible as possible
and make adjustments as other teams change their schemes.
I would also like use be a significantly better serving team; fewer
errors and more aces. The big changes that will come this season
will more than likely happen in practice so they might not be
noticed as much in matches.”
Coach Benoit said the team has worked hard in the off-season
with conditioning workouts and had a solid spring. She said the
team is looking to get back to their winning ways of the past.
“We expect the seniors to have a great season,’’ Benoit adds.
“These are four young ladies who have given an awful lot of themselves
to be ready for an unforgettable final season. They worked tirelessly
this past spring and summer to be as prepared as possible.”
As for the conference race, Benoit states that it will be challenging
again this fall but said she feels her team can reclaim the top spot, as
long as they stay focused. The Great Lakes Region, which the
Mount is a member of, appears to be highly competitive as usual.
“We are playing the top teams in the region again this season so
by the end of the season we will have a solid idea of how things are
shaping up,’’ Benoit says. “The schedule that we have this season is
as tough as it gets in the region and we do play some very good
nationally-ranked teams as well.
Getting back into the top 20 to 25 teams in the country is important
to us because we feel we owe it to ourselves and the Mount teams
that have done so well before us. We want that tradition to continue.”
As for goals this season, which kicks off on August 29 at the Ohio
Northern University Invitational, Benoit said her team would like to
win the HCAC regular season and tournament titles, and be
regionally and nationally ranked.
“By far, our number goal is the have an unforgettable season in
every way possible,’’ Benoit says.
MOUNT IN THE HCAC
The volleyball team has dominated the Heartland Collegiate Athletic
Conference for the past ten years playing against schools such as
Anderson University, Bluffton University, Defiance College, Franklin
College, Hanover College, Manchester College and Transylvania
University. They have won 88 of 91 matches against HCAC foes,
and captured nine of 10 HCAC Tournament Championships.
The Lions began their first year in the HCAC in 1998 by winning
all six regular season matches and defeating Bluffton in the finals to
win the conference tournament. Also in 1998, Penny Georgetown
was conference MVP and Michele Benoit was named Coach of the
Year. Betsy Owens and Penny Georgetown gained First Team All-
Conference awards while Anne Volkerding received an Honorable
Mention award.
The next season saw the Lions with a repeat performance in the
HCAC. They ended the season with a 6-0 record, and defeated
Anderson for first place in the tournament. Benoit was Coach of the
Year for the second year in a row, and Owens had another solid
season. She was named conference MVP, First Team All-Conference,
and Player of the Week three times. Anne Volkerding also gained
the title of First Team All-Conference, and Annie Schroth and Staci
Short received Honorable Mention awards. Short was also a HCAC
Player of the Week selection during the season.
Again in 2000, the Lions ended the conference season with a
perfect record, 6-0, and won the tournament by defeating Franklin
for the title. The Mount posted HCAC-best numbers or secondbest
numbers in kills, hitting, assists, digs, and blocks. For the
second year in a row, Owens received conference MVP. She was
also First Team All-Conference and was Player of the Week twice.
Cristina Webb and Schroth joined Owens with their First Team
All-Conference awards. Webb and Sarah Espenscheid were also
Players of the Week.
The Mount continued its domination of the conference in 2001,
finishing the season undefeated for the fourth year in a row. The
Lions captured the HCAC title by defeating Defiance, and led the
conference in both kills and assists. Betsy Owens was named conference
MVP for the third year in a row, was selected for First-Team All-
Conference, and was named Player of the Week three times. Joining
Owens on the First-Team All-Conference were teammates Tiffany
Norwell and Cristina Webb. Ginny Thomas received an Honorable
Mention award. Webb, Thomas and Norwell were also selected as
Players of the Week during the season.
In 2002, the Lions had their unbeaten conference winning streak
stopped at 35 matches (regular season and conference) losing to
Franklin College. The Mount finished second in the conference –
the first time in conference history that they did not win the HCAC
regular season – but rebounded to win their fifth straight conference
tournament title with a win over the Grizzlies. The Lions were third
in the conference team statistics in hitting percentage, kills per
game, assists per game, and digs per game. Tammi Toney led all
HCAC players in hitting percentage. Four Mount players, Toney,
Ginny Thomas, Meghan Meador, and Tiffany Norwell made First
Team All-Conference. Toney and Thomas also collected Player of
the Week honors during the season.
The 2003 season saw the Mount rule the conference again. The
Lions went 7-0 in regular season and 2-0 in tournament play, again
defeating Franklin in the championship game. The Mount also was
first in four conference team statistics. Tammi Toney, Jayne
Kemphaus and Meagan Meador also took All-Conference First
Team honors, while teammate Molly Middendorf received
All-Conference Second Team honors. Toney was also named
conference MVP and HCAC Tournament MVP.
The 2004 season marked another stellar effort by the Lions in
conference action. The Lions upped their career HCAC record to
60-1 by breezing through the regular season (7-0) and the postseason
tournament (3-0) to place first in both. In fact, the Mount dropped
only two games all season in their 10 HCAC matches. The regular
season title was their sixth in seven years of play, and the HCAC
tournament title was their seventh straight. They defeated Franklin
14

for the third straight season in the HCAC tournament to advance to
the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Tammi Toney, Jayne Kemphaus
and Molly Middendorf were selected First Team All-Conference
while Lindsay Thiery was named Second Team All-Conference.
Toney won regular season and conference tournament MVP honors.
The Lions rolled through another season of HCAC play in 2005,
claiming their seventh HCAC regular season title (in eight years of
play) and eighth straight HCAC Tournament championship. The
Mount coasted through the conference regular season with a 7-0
mark and then posted three more wins in the HCAC tournament,
including a 3-0 victory over Defiance to claim the title and advance
to the regional tournament. The Mount got a balanced attack
throughout the HCAC schedule, with Beth Fledderjohann, Claire
Alfers and Lindsay Thiery making the All-Tournament team.
Fledderjohann was also named the tournament MVP. Katie
Feldkamp, Becky Breetz and Thiery were all named First-Team
All-HCAC for their play in the regular season while Feldkamp
(MVP) and Katie Playko (Freshman of the Year) claimed individual
conference honors. Lions’ Head Coach Michele Benoit was selected
HCAC Coach of the Year. Becky Breetz captured three HCAC
Player of the Week awards during the season, and the Lions led the
conference in hitting percentage, assists per game, kills per game,
blocks per game and service aces per game.
Senior Katie Feldkamp led another outstanding year of Lions play
in 2006 HCAC action. Feldkamp was in the top five of three major
offensive categories during the regular season, leading the Mount to
another unbeaten record and first place in the standings. Feldkamp,
who won three of the Mount’s five overall conference Player of the
Week awards, was honored for her efforts by being named the
HCAC Most Valuable Player for the second straight season.
Teammates Katie Playko, a sophomore, and Claire Alfers, a senior,
were named First Team All-Conference while senior Ashley
Langenkamp was Second Team All-HCAC. Playko was second in
2008 VOLLEYBALL GUIDE
the conference in assists while Langenkamp, who had another solid
all-around season, and teammate Sarah Dunn, a sophomore, were in
the top ten in the conference in service aces per game. Coach
Michele Benoit won her fourth HCAC Coach of the Year award,
and her second straight, as she helped the Mount to two wins in
the HCAC Tournament and an HCAC Tournament title. Junior
Becky Breetz, Feldkamp (tournament MVP), and Playko were
named to the HCAC All-Tournament team. As a team, the Mount
finished first in kills, and second in hitting percentage, assists per
game, and service aces. In 10 matches involving HCAC teams in
2007, the Mount won 30 of 36 games played.
In 2007 the Lions tied Hanover College for first place in the
regular season standings, with each posting 7-1 records. The Lions
fell to the Panthers by a 3-0 score and then lost in the conference
tournament finals to Hanover, 3-1. The loss in the HCAC
Tournament marked the first time since the Mount joined the
conference (1998) that the Lions did not win the HCAC
Tournament and receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III
Regional Tournament. The Lions, the number two seed in the
HCAC Tournament defeated #3 seeded Manchester, 3-0 to advance
to the conference finals.
The Mount put up some impressive statistics in conference play,
finishing first in HCAC team statistics kills per game and assists per
game, and second in hitting percentage. Becky Breetz was second in
hitting percentage and third in kills per game in the conference
while teammates Jamie Cooper (second in services aces per game)
and Katie Playko (fourth in assists per game) also had fared well in
conference play. Breetz and Playko were named First Team All-
Conference while Anna Richter won Second Team All-HCAC
honors. The Lions garnered four of the nine Player of the Week
honors during the 2007 season, with Richter winning twice, and
Breetz and Playko capturing one each. The Mount won 21 of 28
conference games during the regular season.
