Standard features
IT products are expected to merge various requirements
into ideal results. Servers are no exception. On the con-
trary, their special task is to obtain maximum effectiveness
and security within complex IT architectures. In this regard,
the performance of the PLATINUM 1500 IR is exceptional.
The MAXDATA PLATINUM 1500 IR is designed for applica-
tions that demand high performance on the one hand, yet
provide little space for implementation on the other. This
includes computer centres and any company that wants
to consolidate its service whilst providing the highest pos-
sible performance density.
With up to two Xeon processors and a main memory of
up to 12 GB with memory mirroring, the PLATINUM 1500
IR stands for high performance. The safety features are
complemented by the integrated SCSI host RAID control-
ler, enabling the hard disks to be mirrored. At the same
time the system allows up to three SCSI hot-plug hard
disks to be inserted – all within a single unit. Few devices
concentrate so much performance, security and flexibility
in such a small space.
The fast PCI interfaces provide particularly high data
throughput to the hardware extensions. The casing, which
can be opened without tools, and MAXDATA server man-
agement facilitate system maintenance and administra-
tion.

Demand Based Switching
When there is little computing work to be done, the fast
processors (from 3.0 GHz) act slower, if necessary down to
2.8 GHz, whilst at the same time reducing the key voltage.
This reduces the lost output and saves energy without
losing performance.
Memory mirroring
One option to increase the consistency of the working
memory is to mirror it. In this case a bit error in the
memory will not cause the system to fail because the
mirror is still correct. This means that if there is a bit error
the hardware can recreate the data in a corrupt memory
from the mirror. As a result a bit error can only be produced
if the error occurs in the primary and secondary copy at the
same time.
Mirroring the working memory not only improves memory
consistency, it also increases the speed of access to the
memory by accessing both modules at the same time; this
is an additional subsidiary benefit of mirroring data.
Extended Memory 64 Technology
This technology is one of the innovations in the new
generation of MAXDATA servers. Expanding the architec-
ture used to date means substantially more memory can
be addressed. Processors with Intel ® EM64T also support
64-bit operating systems from Microsoft ® , Red Hat ® and
SuSE ® , but are also fully compatible with today’s 32-bit
applications and operating systems.
