The 7th Robin Hood
Beer and Cider Festival
Also Known As...
The 39th Annual Nottingham CAMRA Beer and Cider Festival
Welcome again to the wonderful extravaganza of real ale,
cider and perry that is the annual Nottingham Beer and
Cider Festival. We are pleased to back for a seventh year
in the superb setting of Nottingham Castle.
As always, we bring you the widest possible selection of
beers from all over the country, presenting a magnificent
1,200 different casks of real ale, which we are confident
is the largest number of cask ales ever assembled at a
festival, or other venue, in the world beating the record
set by last years festival! There will also be one of the
widest selection of traditional ciders and parries ever
assembled together in this country, over 200 of them,
and all sourced from the smaller artisanal producers,
many of them from the East Midlands.
Please remember that our festival is staffed by unpaid
volunteers, who give up their time to help us run the
festival. Please be patient with them if at busy times
you have to wait to be served. The Festival is very
much a team effort and I would like to thank my fellow
CAMRA members on the Branch Committee for all
their work along with many others who have given up
time to make the festival the success it is. Thanks also
to our main sponsors, Castle Rock Brewery, Everards
Brewery, Navigation Brewery, Nottingham Brewery,
and Nottingham City Council and also to the team at
the Castle who are always tremendously helpful and
supportive of the event.
Finally, please enjoy yourself!
Chairman – Nottingham CAMRA
Entertainment
Once again a full programme of entertainment will be
available for your enjoyment, starting on the Wednesday
evening from 7pm and all day Thursday through
Saturday. As usual it will be centred around the Victorian
bandstand in the Everards Entertainment Zone.
Hard negotiations were still going on as this programme
went to press, so unfortunately a full listing cannot
be given. We were trying for the Rolling Stones but
sadly Mick is having his hair done on the date we had
available and the proprietor of the pawn shop used by
Joe Bonnamassa is on holiday and he can’t get his guitar
back.
Forefront Productions Ltd. Based in Newark-on-
Trent, will supply the PA for the festival. Our thanks to
them.
WEDNESDAY
7-8.30pm
Euler (9.30-11pm)
Like the 18th Century maverick from which they took
their name, Euler are also scientists… of the song.
Although always striving to explore their musical
abilities to the full, here is a band that knows the value
of the simple and effective formula – to produce great
indie rock and roll, which not only fills the room, but
also catches the imagination and more importantly,
sticks in your head.
THURSDAY
No Fixed Abode (1.30-2.30pm)
Duo featuring vocals and acoustic guitar, they describe
their music as Joni Mitchell meeting Bruce Springsteen
and having a jam after a bottle or two of wine.
Booba Dust (3.30-5pm)
An R&B band, featuring Dick Daniel aka ‘Lightnin’
Dan’, Rich Warren, bass and Pete Tattersall aka ‘George
Thunderbird’ (a Blues guitarist from way back in the late
sixties)
Daniel has a Jazz & Soul background, Pete with the more
rootsy down-home feel, playing guitar, slide, harmonica
and singing (not forgetting his Amplified Foot!!!!)
nailed down with Rich’s back bone bass rumble. It all
forms a fine combination for the Blues.
Broken Mandarins (6–8pm)
They are a four-piece band based in Nottingham –
They play great songs from the last four decades, whilst
avoiding the usual material that is perhaps becoming
clichéd on the live circuit. The line up comprises of four
accomplished musicians playing Keyboards, Guitar,
Bass, and Drums.
Acoustica (9-11pm)
Acoustica are a fantastic 4 piece acoustic covers band
consisting of lead acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, cajon
box and a selection of 6,12 guitar string and mandolin,
with 4 part harmony vocals. Classic songs from the likes
of REM, Crowded house, The Rolling Stones, Tom
Petty, The Stranglers, Blue Oyster Cult, Focus and many
more.
Pesky Alligators (1.30-3pm)
The sound that the Pesky Alligators greet you with from
their twisting guitar and raunchy drum beat is nothing
but explosive and if it does not set the pulse racing
then you need to make an appointment at your local
undertakers.
of acoustic instruments.
The Mobile App!
After a successful first year at the Nottingham Robin
Hood Beer and Cider Festival the mobile app returns for
another year.
The mobile app will be available for
both iOS (Apple) and Android phones.
Once you download the app you’ll
be able to see the full list of beers and
ciders available at the festival, you can
also create your own beer or cider list
before you go so you can track down
the ones you really want!
As well as listing and making lists for
the beers or ciders, you’ll be able to share which drinks
you have drunk with your friends on social media using
the #rcbcf14 hashtag. You can also rate your drinks so
everyone else will know how good (or bad) they are!
The list should be updated during the Festival itself with
beers or ciders that have gone and reserves that come
on. Alongside using the app at the festival itself, it will
also list the food offers and events for the Festival Fringe
Fortnight so you’ll never be far away from a fringe event.
The app has kindly been sponsored and built by
Nottingham based web, video and app company Atomic
Media (www.atomicmedia.co.uk) and should be
available from 5 th October.
To download the app go to:
fact they have improved the service by increasing the
number of access points within the grounds.
Search for wifi networks on your device to find it, and
don’t forget to download the app.
SIBA Midlands
Beer Competition
The Society of Independent
Brewers (SIBA) represents the
interests of the growing numbers
of independent brewing companies
in the UK. Beer and ale have
been traditional and wholesome
beverages for well over 2,000 years,
and many styles are indigenous and unique to the British
Isles. SIBA members seek to preserve these traditional
styles and their traditional methods of production,
whilst at the same time demonstrating the skill of their
craft through creativity, invention and innovation.
To celebrate their achievements SIBA organises an
annual competition to find their beer of the year. Once
again, we are proud to have been asked to host the SIBA
Midlands Region heat of this competition that will
choose the champion beers of the Midlands.
Around 340 different cask beers are judged in eight
categories in a blind tasting by panels comprising of
both experts and beer lovers. This will take place on
Thursday afternoon with the results announced early
Thursday evening. But you can taste the brews yourself
and judge which you think are the best, the beers are
marked as “SIBA” in the programme and all can be found
in the main beer tent.
Hungry What to Eat
As you would expect we have a wide range of stalls
serving hot and cold food. Soft drinks are available from
the Funfair bar and from stalls in the main marquee.
Country wines will be available in both marquees and
there will be the usual stalls again this year.
Public Transport
Don’t forget that drinking
and driving do not mix.
There are buses to most
areas of Nottingham and the
surrounding area with many late buses running out
of the city at night. There are midnight buses on all of
NCTs Go2 routes and the tram runs until midnight.
Trent Barton run many late buses as well with even later
ones on Friday and Saturday night. Details can be found
History
It has been described as the most successful pressure
group ever and that is about an organisation which
did not even exist until 1971. In that year a small band
of drinkers lamenting the sad state of British Beers
decided that they had had enough. National brewers
had introduced Keg beers to replace traditional cask
conditioned beer as they represented a way of saving
money.
Millions were poured into advertising fizz brews and
eventually the brewers produced the ultimate Keg beer
- Red Barrel. The Watneys Red Revolution had arrived
and rather than seeing off traditional beers it signaled the
end of Keg. Drinkers faced with CO2 gas pumped into
their beer objected and from this grew CAMRA -initially
to protect Real Ale and latterly to represent the drinker
on all aspects of the brewing industry.
1973 saw local branches established and one of the first
was in Nottingham, At that time beer in Nottingham
was cheap and good, Four local independent breweries
What Colour is it
When ordering beer for the festival we always ask our
suppliers for a description to use in the programme.
Unfortunately many brewers provide us with
descriptions that may be accurate but tell the average
drinker next to nothing about what the beer will taste
like. For example “Sophisticated series of tastes and
aromas” and “Very smooth with exceptional clarity” are
both genuine submissions for beer at this year’s festival!
In reality we find that the main question our customers
ask about a beer is “what colour is it” Not an
unreasonable question as the colour of the beer reflects,
to a high degree, the type of malts used to produce it.
The darkness of the grain indicates the degree to which it
has been roasted and this in turn has a significant bearing
on the taste, although of course many other factors come
into play such as the quantity and type of hops used.
There are several ways of representing beer colours and,
supplied some of the best beers in the Country.
Since then Nottingham has witnessed the closure of
Shipstones Star Brewery; Home Brewery at Daybrook;
Mansfiled Brewery at Littleworth and finally in 2007
Hardys & Hansons was also lost. On the positive side
micro breweries have become established with plenty of
such breweries within 20 miles of the City Centre. They
are leading the charge to show that Nottingham beers
are great.
If you are interested in beer then you can keep up to date
by reading the Nottingham Drinker. This is published
bi monthly and available free of charge from many
local pubs, libraries and the Tourist Information centre.
Updates on the LocAle scheme are included along with
details of the latest discounts available to CAMRA
members. Interesting articles include crawls by public
transport, reviews of local breweries and many other
fascinating reads. ND also contains details of all the
social activities including the branch meetings held on
the last Thursday or every month.
Don’t forget to visit our website at
www.nottinghamcamra.org
All our meetings and trips are on the site along with
electronic copies of the Nottingham Drinker.
as in previous years, we have used Joseph W. Lovibond’s
scale, as it is the only one we could understand! Our
cellar team will examine each beer before it goes on sale
and attach one of the four following labels to the cask.
This is only a rough guide to try to help customers and
is dependent on the eyesight of our cellar team which
can be dodgy at the best of times but even more so after
they have finished, sampling, oops I meant testing, fifty
different beers! If you find one that you think is wrong,
look for the guys in the luminous orange vests and they
will cheerfully change the label for you (well, all except
the old grumpy one – he will no doubt moan about it
first!)
THE BEERS
From opening on Wednesday evening around 900 beers
should be available to choose from, if they are ready.
Then around 300 further beers will go on sale later in
the festival once there is room on the stillages. This is
to ensure that there is still a good selection of beers
available throughout the festival.
The beers on sale from the start are numbered to help
you spot them on the bar. The reserve beers are marked
“RES”, apologies if these appear in a slightly random
order, as they have to be fitted onto the stillage as space
permits.
Breweries marked NEW have opened since last year’s
festival.
Beers marked SIBA are those entered into the SIBA
competition.
Breweries marked LocAle are situated within 20 miles
of the festival.
THE CIDERS AND PERRIES
All of the producers will be featured and on sale from the
start of the festival, but due to space restrictions, we may
not be able to get every single cider and perry in the bar.
Please bear with us.
Note: We do not sell “pear cider” and the only fruits
used in these drinks are apples or pears. We don’t
have any ice either.
The producers are organised alphabetically. There is
a dedicated East Midlands Cider Bar and a dedicated
Welsh Cider Bar.
To help identify the ciders and perries on the bar, the
ABV posters will feature a red apple icon for cider and a
green pear icon for perry.
This list is correct at the time of going to press, but could
change. ABVs will be clearly printed on the ABV posters
on the bars.
