A good earthing system in accordance with DIN VDE 0185-3 (IEC 62305-3) is the basis of a good lightning 

protection system. The lightning current safely deflected by the interception and arrester system is routed to the 

ground. The equipotential bonding performs an additional task between the arresters and as an equipotential bonding 

controller in passable areas.

Planning an earthing system 

The earthing system is part of the 

external lightning protection system, 

which routes the lightning current 

into the ground where it is to be 

distributed. The key criteria for an 

even lightning current distribution 

without dangerous surges occurring 

are form and dimensions. 

In accordance with DIN VDE 0185 

Part 3 (IEC 60305-3) Section 4.4.1, 

a lower earthing resistance < 10 

is generally recommended. 

An earthing system can be 

constructed from one of the three 

arrangements described below. 

It is possible to connect different 

earthing arrangements, although 

the risk of corrosion must be taken 

into account. 

Important notice: earthing 

systems must be connected to 

the equipotential bonding. 

 

Deep earther 

A deep earther is an earther, 

which is generally integrated vertically 

and deep into the ground. 

The simplest solution for retrofitting 

a lightning protection system. 

 

Ring earther 

A ring earther is a surface 

earther, which if possible is 

installed as a closed ring at 

a distance of 1.0 m and 0.5 m 

deep into the ground around the 

external foundation of the 

building. The better, although 

more expensive, solution for 

retrofitting a lightning protection 

system. 

 

Foundation earther 

A foundation earther (acc. to TAB 

1974 specified for new buildings) 

is embedded into the concrete 

foundation of a building. It then 

also acts as a lightning protection 

earther, if the lugs required 

for connecting the arresters protrude 

from the foundation. 

Deep earther 

A deep earther (arrangement Type 

A) is an earther that is generally integrated 

vertically and deep into the 

ground. 

As single earthers, a deep earther of 

9.0 m in length is recommended. 

This should be installed at a distance 

of 1.0 m from the foundation 

of the building. As a minimum 

dimension (acc. to DIN VDE 0185 

Part 3 Fig. 2) a length of 2.5 m for 

vertical installation and 5 m for horizontal 

installation apply for Type A 

earthers for lightning protection 

classes III and IV. The required 

earther lengths may be split into 

several lengths connected in parallel. 

Depending on the soil conditions, 

deep earthers can be driven 

into the ground by hand or by using 

suitable electric, petrol or pneumatic 

hammers. 

The following materials can be 

used: 

Rods from galvanised steel 

Ø 20 mm

Ø 25 mm (2 mm wall thickness)

In potentially corrosive areas, stainless 

steel must always be used. 

Detachable connections in the 

ground must be protected against 

corrosion (plastic corrosion protection 

strip). 

Note: For deep earthers, 

a length of 9.0 m is recommended.

Foundation earthers 

A foundation earther is an earther 

that is embedded into the concrete 

foundation of a building. It acts as 

a lightning protection earther if the 

lugs required for connecting the 

arresters protrude from the foundation. 

The steel strip is to be attached 

/ connected to reinforcements at a 

distance of approx. 3 m. DIN 18014 

forms the basis for constructing 

external lightning protection 

systems. 

Wedge connectors must not be 

inserted into the ground. In order to 

achieve a clean insertion, the use of 

strip holders is recommended for 

the installation of foundation 

earthers. The holders must be 

inserted at a distance of approx. 2 m.
