Water-Based Monoprints
Fee $99
FRIDAY, 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., March 9
SATURDAY and SUNDAY, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 10
and 11, 3 sessions.
Course #AT353 01/CRN 31214
Grace Mayer
Due to its immediacy and painterly qualities, monoprint
is highly rewarding. The class will work exclusively
with water-based media. These new methods
eliminate the need for solvents, which gets rid of
fumes and makes cleanup a snap. Explore a variety of
approaches to the monoprint, including additive and
subtractive methods of working and chine colle, the
application of thin, decorative papers. Monoprint is a
fun, easy method of print making, especially for
artists who want to work unencumbered by complicated
technical processes. Grace Mayer has an MFA
from the University of Pennsylvania and has been
making prints in Santa Fe for years.
Mita Saldaña
Making your own books to keep or give as gifts is a
bookbinder with years of experience. Her lively and
energetic classes are designed for both beginning and
advanced book artists. Save 15 percent when you
★ Beginning Bookbinding Basics
Fee $109
SATURDAY, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 14, 2 wks.
Course #CR304 01/CRN 31371
Mita Saldaña
Learn the essential terms, techniques and materials of
hand bookbinding. Create structures using a variety
of adhesive and nonadhesive bindings, including a
pamphlet stitched dos-à-dos, a pocket-paged accordion-fold
book and a single signature book sewn
onto tapes and casebound into a hard cover. In the
process you will become familiar with the basics of
measuring, folding, gluing, sewing and cutting both
paper and board. The instructor is a professional
binder who runs the bookbinding studio “Against the
Grain” in Albuquerque.
★ Handmade Photo Albums NEW!
Fee $69
SATURDAY, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 28, 1 day.
Course #CR311 01/CRN 31338
Mita Saldaña
In this workshop, students construct two kinds of
photo albums. The first is an accordion structure set
up for horizontal pictures. There is minimal gluing
involved and the whole book ties with a decorative
ribbon. The second is a post-bound photo album
with hinged covers. Both are great for the bookmaker
who dislikes sewing. They are easy to do at home and
make terrific holiday gifts. Mita Saldaña is owner of
“Against the Grain,” a book arts studio in
Albuquerque.
What is it about ceramic tile that is so alluring Is it
its enduring beauty, bright color or interesting texture
Whatever its charm, clay tile has the ability to
enhance our home environment. You do not need an
art background to make tile, and the process of
working with clay is wonderfully practical and direct.
Bring a sense of fun and experimentation and learn
to make tile in a variety of techniques, from slab
rolling to plaster press molds. Paint and decorate the
surface of your tile with colored slips and glazes.
