Art
Continuing Education art classes are designed for
creative people of all levels. Whether you are a
beginning or more advanced artist, Continuing
Education has a class for you. Some of the classes
include all of the supplies; others require you to
purchase materials. The supply list may be found
on the Web site after the course title under
“Syllabus Available.”
DRAWING
Beginning Drawing

John St. Peter
Explore drawing in a supportive environment where
creativity is encouraged. You’ll learn basic skills for
drawing from life incorporating both traditional and
contemporary methods. Several approaches to drawing
will be covered including pencil, charcoal and collage.
Demonstrations and art history lectures enhance
the work done in class. John St. Peter has an MFA
and enjoys encouraging beginning artists along their
creative path.

Jane Shoenfeld
Develop your artistic skills and increase your confidence
in your personal creativity. If you are afraid to draw or
need help getting started, this class will help you discover
techniques and perceptual aids that show you how to
draw what you see and develop your sense of color, line,
form and personal imagery. Jane Shoenfeld has a master’s
of fine arts degree from Pratt Institute in New York and
is a licensed art therapist.

Jakki Kouffman
Release yourself to the act of drawing naturally. Using
simple exercises, this basic class outlines several
straightforward methods for creating images on paper
with pencils and other drawing tools. Working directly
from life and other sources, you will explore contour
drawing, negative and positive space, and how

to work with proportion. No experience is necessary.
In the second section, painting will be introduced.
Jakki Kouffman exhibits her paintings nationally and
has taught drawing and painting for more than 20
years.

Kevin Gorges
Drawing the nude — from quick warm-up gesture
drawings to two long studies per evening —
improves the student’s drawing skills, awareness and
understanding of one of the oldest traditions in art.
Short slide presentations of master works or anatomy
and personalized critiques are part of the course.
Some drawing experience is recommended. Kevin
Gorges has studied art in this country and abroad
and has taught in Ireland and Italy.

Kevin Gorges
This class is for those with some nude-figure drawing
experience who are ready to move to the next level.
After a series of brief warm-up gestures, the model
maintains one long pose for the duration of the session,
giving you time to develop your drawings and
focus on aspects of the figure that give you trouble.
Short slide presentations are part of the course.
Personalized critiques focus on accuracy of gesture,
proportion and artistic anatomy.

Ghost Ranch OFF CAMPUS

Jane Shoenfeld
Join master pastelist Jane Shoenfeld on an excursion
to Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu. Friday evening, the class
will meet in the college studios, where the instructor
will teach you how to create brilliant color with pastel
underpainting techniques. Working from photographs
of the Ghost Ranch area, you will learn how
to simplify the landscape. On Saturday, the class will
meet in Abiquiu, where the magic and power that
inspired O’Keeffe will speak through your art as you
use these techniques to create expressive pastel paintings
of these remarkable canyons and mesas. Jane
Shoenfeld has been teaching pastel landscape painting
at Ghost Ranch for 11 years. Her work is exhibited
in New Mexico at the Nightingale Wilder Gallery
in Taos and has been published in American Artist
Magazine. She is also a licensed art therapist with a
specialization in the creative process.
