ENRICHMENT
BILL NEUWIRTH
CHACO CANYON
“We had plenty of
time at each site to
learn, to ponder
and to let information
sink in. We
really absorbed the
energy of the site,
it was much better
than a self-guided
tour. Bill has such
a wealth of knowledge
that serves to
give a great
overview of the
whole region
including the physical
and spiritual
aspects.”
Chaco Canyon — Easier Pace
Fee $149
Orientation: TUESDAY, 6 to 8 p.m., May 1
Field Trip: SATURDAY and SUNDAY, 8:30 a.m. to
5 p.m., May 5 and 6, 3 sessions.
Course #SW311 01/CRN 31293
Bill Neuwirth
At Chaco Canyon, you’re in touch with the past. On
this outing you’ll visit most of the major sites, including
Pueblo Bonito, Pueblo del Arroyo, Chetro Ketl
and Casa Rinconada. You’ll also take hikes out of the
canyon. Archaeology, architecture, mythology and the
Pueblo worldview are highlighted, and you’ll learn
about archaeological methods and the prehistory of
the area. Course #SW310 involves two hikes out of
the canyon. Course #SW311 offers an easier pace
and involves only one hike out of the canyon and
more time at each site. You must furnish your own
transportation and food; car pools to the overnight
campsite will be arranged. An itinerary will be provided
at registration. Early registration is encouraged, as
classes generally fill to capacity.
Animal Tracking OFF CAMPUS
Fee $75
SATURDAY, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 14, 1 day.
Course #SW313 01/CRN 31294
Bill Neuwirth
Would you like to know more about those animal
tracks you’ve noticed on your walks or hikes This
class covers tracking techniques, perceptual widening,
different track patterns, scale and animal gaits, rates of
track deterioration, clues to animal behavior and animal
interaction with the landscape. You must furnish
your own transportation. An itinerary will be provided
at registration. Class size is small to allow for more
personal attention, so early registration is encouraged.
Geologic Story of the Valles Caldera
OFF CAMPUS
Fee $75
SUNDAY, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., May 20, 1 day.
Course #SW314 01/CRN 31240
Kirt Kempter
Experience the magnificent vistas of the northern
Jemez Mountains with local geologist Kirt Kempter.
Departing Santa Fe, travel to Española and then turn
west onto Forest Road 144 (also known as 39-Mile
Road), winding your way up to the northern Jemez
Mountains. Ascending the back side of Chicoma
Peak, there are spectacular views of the Rio Grande
Rift, Pajarito Plateau and other geologic features of
the northern Jemez Mountains. The road also cuts
through the core of an old volcano, active 10 million
years ago. Our destination is a picnic lunch stop on
the north rim of the Valles Caldera, providing a spectacular
view of the northern portion of the caldera. A
lecture at this stop will provide a geologic history of
the caldera since the massive eruption that occurred
1.2 million years ago — a dynamic story describing
multiple lakes and volcanic eruptions within the
caldera since its collapse. Other geologic highlights
include overviews of Cerro Pedernal, the Rio Grande
Rift and the Chama River Valley.
Survival Skills in the Wilderness
OFF CAMPUS
Fee $39
SUNDAY, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 25, 1 day.
Course #SW316 01/CRN 30905
SUNDAY, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., May 13, 1 day.
Course #SW316 02/CRN 30906
Arthur Judd
This is a one-day workshop concentrating on essential
survival skills in the wilderness. The class will
teach students to build and expand their mental
focus, physical skills and planning for the outdoors.
Examples are cited from real-life situations, some
where people survived and some where people did
not. Students will learn from both. The morning is
spent in discussion on how to avoid hazards, how to
handle hazards, adapting to a wilderness environment,
weather signs and predictions, orienting with
and without a map or compass, life zone considerations
in the Southwest, and attention to each individual’s
anxieties. After lunch, the hike will put
newly found knowledge and insights into practice.
Map and GPS
Fee $49
WEDNESDAY, 6 to 9 p.m., April 25; and SATURDAY,
8 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 28, 2 days.
Course #SW318 01/CRN 31298
Karen Denison
Global Positioning System (GPS) devices are becoming
popular tools for active outdoors folks, but learning
to use them can be confusing. In this practical,
easy workshop, students will read topographical maps
with special attention to numeric coordinates, review
magnetic-compass skills, learn the strengths and pitfalls
of hand-held GPS receivers, and test their newfound
skills with an all-day field trip (moderate walking).
Perfect for those wishing to hike off-trail, play
the “geocaching” treasure hunt game or rediscover a
special spot. Also applicable to automobile and
marine GPS users, although examples will be geared
to those on foot. GPS units are supplied for class or
bring your own.
Map and Compass Orienteering
