More than half of all U.S. households possess some<br />
type of firearm for hunting, sports or protection. Even<br />
if you don’t own one, chances are your neighbor does,<br />
so it makes sense to know the basics of firearms operations<br />
and safety. This orientation program is offered<br />
nationally by the National Rifle Association (NRA). It<br />
covers how firearms operate, safe handling and cleaning,<br />
and basic shooting skills. It is particularly good<br />
for those new to shooting. The site for Saturday<br />
shooting will be discussed in class. Enrollment is limited<br />
to eight students. The fee includes a handbook<br />
and a safety brochure.<br />

This course, prepared by the NRA, presents what<br />
every shooter should know about how revolvers and<br />
semi-automatic pistols work, safe gun handling, proper<br />
ammunition, cleaning and storage. It also takes<br />
students step-by-step through the fundamentals of<br />
pistol shooting, including stance, grip and sight alignment.<br />
The Saturday session will take place at a local<br />
shooting range. The fee includes a handbook and safety<br />
brochure. This course also includes a one-hour<br />
presentation on legal issues by a local attorney.<br />

Plan now to maintain your license! If you already<br />
hold a license to carry a concealed firearm, check its<br />
expiration date. Keep in mind that the state requires<br />
you to take a refresher course to qualify for renewal.<br />
Your renewal application must include proof that you<br />
completed the refresher no more than 90 days prior to<br />
submission, and you can submit your application up<br />
to 60 days before your license expires. This stateapproved<br />
course includes classroom and outdoor<br />
range time with your own firearm(s). The instructors<br />
are NRA-certified and approved by the New Mexico<br />
Department of Public Safety.<br />
