The Lake Charles Yacht Club will sponsor its annual Contraband Days Sailboat Regatta on Saturday, May 12. The regatta has been an annual event since 1969. The event is open to all sailors. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Yacht Club, 1305 North Lakeshore Drive, under the I-10 bridge. A skippers’ meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Three races, weather permitting, will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. All classes of sailboats are invited to participate. Advance entry fee is $40 and includes food and drink at the party following the regatta. Late entry fee is $45 on the day of the regatta. National Day of Prayer to feature Scott Waddle Scott Waddle, retired Navy commander, will be the keynote speaker at the National Day of Prayer at noon Thursday, May 3, in the Exhibition Hall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. Waddle, a native of Austin, Texas, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1981 earning a bachelor of science degree in chemistry. Following graduation he was commissioned an ensign and embarked on a career in the submarine force where he served aboard Atlantic Fleet Trident Ballistic Missile boats Alabama and Kentucky and Pacific Fleet fast attacks San Francisco IN CONCERT: Rare Earth will be in concert at 9 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Malibu Rum Stage. Rare Earth is known for songs such as “Get Ready,’’ “Hey Big Brother,’’ “Losing You,’’ “Born to Wander” and MAY 3 and Greeneville. On Feb. 9, 2001, Waddle’s life was forever changed when he gave the order to perform an emergency surface maneuver that inadvertently caused his submarine to collide with the Ehime Maru, a Japanese fishing vessel, killing nine people on board. Against the advice of his attorney and the Navy’s direction, he took responsibility for the accident. In October 2001, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and retired from active duty as a commander. RARE EARTH “I Just Want to Celebrate” creating an atmosphere reminiscent of the Madison Square Garden Concert in 1970, or the California Jam concertsbroadcast nationally in 1974. The 31st Annual American Press Contraband Days 5 Miler will be at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 12. The race will begin at the Capital One Tower in downtown Lake Charles and continues on the scenic Shell Beach Drive to Riverside Drive and returns. The 5-Miler is the largest and one of the oldest road races in Southwest Louisiana. Awards are three-deep in five-year age categories. Unique Contraband Days T-shirts will be given to all participants. Results are available race morning and in the American Press after race day. Fresh fruit, drinks, beer and pizza will be served after the race. Sponsors are American CARNIVAL FUN MAY 12 AMERICAN PRESS ARCHIVES Participants in the 2006 5-Miler give it all they’ve got. This year’s race is set for May 12. Look-alikes can enter Spittin’ Image contest May 6 The ever-popular KPLC Spittin’ Image Contest returns to Contraband Days at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at the Children’s Stage. The contest is a motherdaughter, and father-son look-alike contest that offers great prizes for the team that most resembles each other. Participants can tip the scales in their favor by dressing alike, wearing their hair the same way or practicing the same walk. No talent or performance is required. Participants can pick up a registration form at the KPLC Studios at 320 Division St., or register at 1 p.m. Sunday, in front of the Children’s Stage. Spammobile making its way to festival The Spammobile is rolling into the Contraband Days Thursday-Sunday, May 10-13. The famous The 35- foot-long Hormel Foods Spammobile, fashioned after a giant can of Spam, on wheels will be sampling bite-size Spamburger hamburgers and the new Spam Singles. Judging will begin at 11 a.m. on the Civic Center grounds. Each team will consist of up to four team members. Entry fee is $250 and must compete in all five categories of seafood, chicken, ribs, wild game and Boston Butt roast. Prizes of $250 for first place, $100 for second and $75 for third will be awarded in each category. Overall Grand Champion based on scores will receive $1,000 cash and trophy. The Runner-up Grand Champion to receive $750.00 cash. Proceeds of the cookoff will be donated to benefit the Lake Area Ulster Project. AMERICAN PRESS ARCHIVES Tour Lafitte will include four routes The KPLC Coca-Cola Tour Lafitte 2007 is scheduled to roll through southwest Louisiana on Saturday, May 5. Moss Bluff United Methodist Church is the driving force behind the premier cycling event of the area. All proceeds from the event are donated to Special Olympics of Louisiana. Participants can also register up to 7:30 a.m. the day of the ride. The tour will have four routes — 62 miles, 50 miles, 35 miles and 10 miles — with fully stocked breakpoints along the way. The routes take riders on a scenic tour through LeBleu Settlement, Iowa and south Lake Charles. Sag vehicles will patrol all routes for convenience and safety. For the daily carnival ride specials call 1-888- 535-2144. The free service is provided by Southwest Call Center. After the ride, participants can enjoy free gumbo, Coca-Cola products, homemade cookies and fellowship.
