The Lake Charles Yacht Club will sponsor its annual<br />

<strong>Contraband</strong> <strong>Days</strong> Sailboat Regatta on Saturday, May<br />

12. The regatta has been an annual event since 1969.<br />

The event is open to all sailors. Registration will begin<br />

at 8 a.m. at the Yacht Club, 1305 North Lakeshore<br />

Drive, under the I-10 bridge. A skippers’ meeting is<br />

scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Three races, weather permitting,<br />

will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. All classes of<br />

sailboats are invited to participate. Advance entry fee<br />

is $40 and includes food and drink at the party following<br />

the regatta. Late entry fee is $45 on the day of the<br />

Scott Waddle, retired<br />

Navy commander, will be<br />

the keynote speaker at the<br />

National Day of Prayer at<br />

noon Thursday, May 3, in<br />

the Exhibition Hall of the<br />

Lake Charles Civic Center.<br />

Waddle, a native of<br />

Austin, Texas, graduated<br />

from the U.S. Naval<br />

Academy in May 1981 earning<br />

a bachelor of science<br />

degree in chemistry.<br />

Following graduation he<br />

was commissioned an<br />

ensign and embarked on a<br />

career in the submarine<br />

force where he served<br />

aboard Atlantic Fleet<br />

Trident Ballistic Missile<br />

boats Alabama and<br />

Kentucky and Pacific Fleet<br />

fast attacks San Francisco<br />

IN CONCERT:<br />

Rare Earth will be in concert<br />

at 9 p.m. Friday, May 4,<br />

at the Malibu Rum Stage.<br />

Rare Earth is known for<br />

songs such as “Get Ready,’’<br />

“Hey Big Brother,’’ “Losing<br />

You,’’ “Born to Wander” and<br />

On Feb. 9, 2001, Waddle’s<br />

life was forever changed<br />

when he gave the order to<br />

perform an emergency surface<br />

maneuver that inadvertently<br />

caused his submarine<br />

to collide with the Ehime<br />

Maru, a Japanese fishing<br />

vessel, killing nine people<br />

on board.<br />

Against the advice of<br />

his attorney and the<br />

Navy’s direction, he took<br />

responsibility for the accident.<br />

In October 2001, he<br />

was honorably discharged<br />

from the Navy and retired<br />

from active duty as a commander.<br />

The race will begin at the<br />

Capital One Tower in downtown<br />

Lake Charles and continues<br />

on the scenic Shell<br />

Beach Drive to Riverside<br />

Drive and returns.<br />

The 5-Miler is the largest<br />

and one of the oldest road<br />

races in Southwest<br />

Louisiana.<br />

Awards are three-deep in<br />

five-year age categories.<br />

Unique <strong>Contraband</strong> <strong>Days</strong><br />

T-shirts will be given to all<br />

participants. Results are<br />

available race morning and<br />

in the American Press after<br />

race day.<br />

Fresh fruit, drinks, beer<br />

and pizza will be served<br />

after the race.<br />

at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at<br />

the Children’s Stage.<br />

The contest is a motherdaughter,<br />

and father-son<br />

look-alike contest that<br />

offers great prizes for the<br />

team that most resembles<br />

each other. Participants can<br />

tip the scales in their favor<br />

by dressing alike, wearing<br />

their hair the same way or<br />

practicing the same walk.<br />

No talent or performance is<br />

required.<br />

bite-size Spamburger hamburgers<br />

The Spammobile is the<br />

first-ever can of original<br />

Spam “on wheels,” and travels<br />

to various festivals, zoos,<br />

malls, retail locations, military<br />

bases and other local<br />
