About CHIREC and the CARE
Foundation...
CHIREC, the Interregional Edith Cavell Hospital
Centre, one of the largest private hospital
complexes in Belgium (880 beds), incorporates the
Edith Cavell, Basilique and Parc Léopold Clinics,
the Braine-l’Alleud - Waterloo Hospital and the
Europe Lambermont Medical Centre.
The research conducted by many doctors practising
at CHIREC has earned them an excellent reputation
thanks to the scientific rigour of their research
works and the quality of their publications.
It was therefore considered essential to have a
dedicated scientific research unit within CHIREC in
order to offer patients the best possible care.
The CARE Foundation was set up in 2004 to fulfil
this objective.
The Foundation is independently managed within
CHIREC, but operates in complete synergy with the
Centre’s governing bodies : its goals and activities
are perfectly in tune with the challenges facing
CHIREC.
Philosophical and political neutrality is the hallmark
of the Foundation’s activities.
Medical research in private
institutions
Whereas fundamental research is mainly
conducted in university institutions, clinical research
is an essential facet of private institutions who
want to stay ahead of the field.
Current developments in the medical world make
it vital to invest in clinical research : increasingly
advanced specialisations and ever more
sophisticated technologies compel us to constantly
question our basic tenets and continually update
our professional skills in order to maintain the
highest standards of excellence.
The Board of Directors, made up of members
of CHIREC and external experts, has the task of
selecting the projects to be funded, bearing in
mind the available budget.
Relevance, originality, scientific value, public
interest and benefits for CHIREC patients are the
key selection criteria applied by members of the
Scientific Committee. Their opinions are backed
by recommendations of a Council of Experts
comprising Belgian and international specialists
renowned for their medical and scientific expertise.
The conducted research is also published in
scientific journals and presented at seminars and
conferences both in Belgium and abroad.
Research work
In 2006-2007 donations funded six research
projects in a wide variety of fields:
• new screening technique for coronary artery
disease,
• optimisation of surgical treatment
of colorectal (bowel) cancer,
• hepatic dysfunction, particularly hepatitis C
during pregnancy,
• development of a new hip prosthesis model,
• better management of stoma patients,
• study of the links between sleep disorders
and obesity.
In 2008-2009 donations helped to fund research
into:
• heart valve diseases,
• digestive tract surgery,
• geriatrics,
• hospital hygiene,
• oncology (breast and ovarian cancer),
• orthopaedic surgery (knee, shoulder),
• diagnostic techniques for prosthesis infection
and pulmonary embolism,
• new approach to manage causalgia
(particularly painful post-traumatic disorder)
