Input
Output
The Black Box range of UK power strips provide a cost-effective
method for providing power directly into cabinets and racks. All the
PDUs in this range are provided with a 3m mains lead, terminated in a
standard UK, 13-Amp mains plug.
Available as either 1U, 2U or 3U horizontally mounted units, or
available as right-hand cable exit or left-hand cable exit vertically
mounted units to save space and provide ease of access for all mains
cabling.
Built from mild steel, all the UK PDUs come complete with fixing
brackets built in. The Basic range also come with a suitable on/off
switch complete with a neon light to show the status of the switch.
These PDUs also include a built-in external metal stud to correctly bond
the units to cabinets.
Black Box Explains
Left- and Right-Hand Cable Exits.
For most people, a PDU will have
standard straight cable exits, so that
when your equipment is plugged in the
power leads will always come out of the
PDU at a 90 O angle. For a lot of
applications, this is absolutely fine and
doesn’t cause a problem.
However, over the years we have
discovered that there are many scenarios
where this is not suitable or convenient,
as the lack of bend in the cable —
particularly where it joins the plug —
will mean that the PDU cannot be
pushed tight up against something to
save space or keep things tidy.
For instance, when running a PDU down the side of your cabinet
there may not be sufficient space if the cables are not able to sit
flush against the side (something that is not possible with a
traditional standard PDU’s cable exit of 90 O ). By using a PDU with a
left- or right-hand cable exit it is possible to eliminate this problem,
as power leads will now leave the PDU at a 45 O angle, meaning that
they can run alongside the edge of the PDU as well as not putting
any strain on the connection where the lead meets the plug.
Remote Power Control.
Simply put, remote power control is the ability to reset or reboot
PC, LAN, telecom and other computer equipment without being at
the equipment’s location.
Who needs remote power control Any organisation with a
network that reaches remote sites. When equipment locks up at
remote sites, it’s usually up to the system manager at the
headquarters to reset it. Remote power control enables the system
manager to take care of problems at the office, saving travelling time
and minimising downtime. This can be done with modems or existing
or special phone lines. The ideal systems uses “out-of-band
management”, an alternate path over an ordinary dialup line that
doesn’t interfere with the network equipment.
An effective remote power control systems incorporates the
following:
• An existing phone line, such as a line being used for a fax,
modem or phone.
• Transparent operation. The system shouldn’t interfere with or be
affected by normal calls.
• Security features. The system should prevent unauthorised access
to network equipment.
• Flexibility. System managers should be able to dial in from
anywhere and control multiple devices with one call.
Power Switch
Remote power control over web or serial.
Input
Output
• 1- or 4-port versions, IEC or countryspecific
socket.
• Each model can be controlled via a serial
RS-232/V.34 interface or Web browser.
• Auto-reboot feature based on “ping”
monitoring.
• High-quality switching electronics.
• All units include 1.8-m UK 3-pin mains
plug to C13 power cable.
The Power Switch series provides remote
control of power outlets. Each product in the
series has a built-in Web server and Ethernet
and a serial RS-232/V.24 connections. The
on/off/reboot capability of these devices is
ideal for rebooting locked-up servers or
controlling the power distribution of
electrical equipment via an intranet or over a
LAN.
Easy and flexible configuration
Configuring the Power Switch is extremely
simple and fast — just set an IP address and a
password through the RS-232/V.24 serial port
of a PC or directly over an IP LAN segment
using a configuration tool (for selected
models) You can freely assign a name to each
socket and to the Power Switch itself in order
to avoid any confusion during commands.
After switching on or after a power failure,
the Power Switch automatically restores its
PSE504A-UK
configuration and the electrical state of the
sockets according to the values saved in it’s
non-volatile memory.
Secure access for powerful command
You can define a password to protect
access to the Power Switch as well as being
able to restrict Web access to an IP address
table. Another feature, exclusive to the Power
Switch, is that it automatically disconnects the
user after two minutes of inactivity.
The outlets can be controlled either
interactively through a Web browser or via
commands to be integrated in an applicaiton
program.
Applications
There are many applications including,
remote restart of servers, workstations and
networking equipment, and switching on or
off printers, lighting, heating etc...
Server Re-Booting.
When installing an intelligent PDU to
ensure the remote re-booting of servers, it
is critical to remember that the BIOS settings
of each server or PC, need to be configured
for the server to automatically
power on when it receives power. Without
this facility being switched on in BIOS, even
intelligent PDUs will not be able to power
up the servers, they will only be able to
power them down.
Solution Profile
Stay in bed
A large web-based retail company were having problems with servers occasionally ‘hanging’ or
‘freezing’ during the night. Engineers were being called out to go and restart the servers to ensure
continued operation. The engineers were become increasingly frustrated at being dragged out of
bed at 2.00 am to go and restart a server for five minutes. The customer already had a Black Box
KVM solution installed, which gave remote access, however, this did not help when a server had
locked up.
Black Box recommended the Secure Power Switch. This eight port, dual-fed, IP controlled PDU
provided a secure IP link via SSL, allowing the engineers to connect and communicate with each
PDU, and to re-boot servers that had crashed. After logging in through an http page, a user name
and password would be entered by the engineer, which would denote which power ports, and
therefore which servers, that particular engineer had access rights to. As well as saving a lot of time,
the PDU also saved all the travelling costs associated with engineer’s journeys, and provided an
in-band solution that integrated with the existing KVM solution. Now the engineers need only to
log in to the KVM system, and each server can be controlled through the one interface. Simplicity in
action.
Power Distribution Units
Secure Power Switch
Control the power in your data centre from anywhere with highest security.
Input
Output
• Secure remote power control over IP with SSL encryption or
through RS-232/V.24 or RS-485 port.
• Controls 8 devices per unit or up to 136 devices as a
cascaded system.
• Dual input and twin output control for redundant power supply
systems.
• PING and port scan-based auto-reboot.
• Warnings and alarms over e-mail.
• Built-in scheduler with SNTP-synchronised clock.
PSE518MA
The new Secure Power Switch is the secure solution for applications
in which you need to control power remotely. It offers HTTPS control
from its built-in Web server and 10/100 Ethernet connection, plus serial
control through the RS-232/V.24 or RS-485 ports (only for Satellite
units). The On/Off/Reboot functions are ideal for restarting crashed
servers or networking equipment (routers, switches) that no longer
respond, as well as remotely controlling the power of virtually any
device.
The Secure Power Switch is a scalable system that you can expand
up to 136 ports (1 Master and 16 Satellites). Each unit supports a
maximum load of 2x10A through its 2 inputs. You can control the
outputs in pairs (or higher amounts) - ideal for equipment using
redundant power supplies.
Installation and setup in a few minutes
You can do the network configuration of the Master unit over your
LAN using the dedicated Windows ® Finder tool or serially over the RS-
232/V.24 port with terminal emulation software. It is very fast and easy.
You can custom label each unit and assign a user-defined name to each
port. The configuration is saved in a nonvolatile internal memory.
Plenty of control options
You can control each port individually, or assign it to one or more
groups for simultaneous command. A group can contain different
ports on different units that are interconnected.
The switch enables you to monitor IP hosts, either using the ICMP
PING protocol or a port scan. If the queried device doesn’t respond
after a predefined amount of attempts or wait time, the switch can
reboot the appropriate output.
You can connect external temperature and humidity sensors to the
power switch, and the administrator can define different rules for
turning on or off certain outputs based on the measured
environmental changes. The switch supports a total of 255 rules per
system.
Each port can turn on and off scheduled events, based on the builtin
real-time clock, which can be periodically synchronised with up to
two different (one primary and one backup) external time references
over the SNTP protocol.
You can also use eight dry contact inputs to create power control
rules based on events and alerts generated by third-party products
compatible with the dry contact electrical interface. Four dry-contact
outputs can control external appliances based on changes on the
power status.
For applications where no IP control is required, use one or more
cascaded satellites to build a system with up to 128 outputs, which can
be controlled over RS-232/V.24 or RS-485 terminal connection with a
PC, KVM switch or console server.
Secure as a Swiss bank
For maximum security, the switch can be accessed through HTTPS,
an SSL-encrypted IP connection. An administrator account is built-in
and up to 8 additional users can be defined, each having a password
and a list of allowed outputs or groups for remote control. Each
power-related event is logged internally and can also be sent
simultaneously to up to two external syslog servers.
The master unit has triple redundancy for the power supply system
of the built-in electronics.
Black Box Explains
Power problems.
Threat Cause Effect
Sags
A sag is a decline in the voltage level. Also
known as “brownouts”, sags are the most
common power problem.
Blackouts
A blackout is a total loss of power.
Spikes
A spike, also called an impulse, is an
instantaneous, dramatic increase in
voltage.
Surges
A surge is an increase in voltage lasting
at least 1/120 of a second.
Sags can be caused locally by the sart-up
demands of electrical devices such as motors,
compressors and elevators.
Sags may also happen during periods of high
electrical use, such as during a heat wave.
Blackouts are caused by excessive demand on
the power grid, an act of nature such as
lightning or an earthquake, or a human
accident such as a car hitting a pylon or a
backhoe digging in the wrong place.
A spike is usually caused by a nearby
lightning strike but may also occur when
power is restored after a blackout.
When high-powered equipment such as an
air conditioner is powered off, the excess
voltage is dissipated through the power line,
causing a surge.
Sags are often the cause of “unexplained”
computer glitches such as system crashes.
frozen keyboards and data loss.
Sags can also reduce the efficiency and lifespan
of electrical motors.
Of course a blackout brings everything to a
complete stop. You also lose any unsaved data
stored in RAM and may even lose the total
contents of your hard drive.
A spike can damage or completely destroy
electrical components and also cause data loss.
Surges stress delicate electronic components,
causing them to wear out before their time.
Noise
Electrical noise, more technically called
electromagnetic interference (EMI) and
radio frequency interference (RFI), interrupts
the smooth sine wave expected from
electrical power.
Noise has many causes, including nearby
lightning, load switching, industrial
equipment and radio transmitters. It may
be intermittent or chronic.
Noise introduces errors into programs and data
files.
Enhanced UK Power Strips
Get your power to where it needs to be, control and monitor it!
• Full SNMP support.
• Easy to use, easy to install.
Available Inputs
• Network manageable with built-in GUI.
• Mild steel construction.
• 16A or 32A options available.
• 16A have a built-in neon light.
• Monitors Volts, Amps and KWh.
• Available in Single-Phase or 3Phase options.
• 24 hour statistics available for download through XML or SNMP.
Available Outputs
The new enhanced range of Black Box PDUs offer the ability to
monitor power consumption, on a per port and per PDU basis.
Rather than assuming how much energy is consumed, you can now
be sure by confirming, through the PDU, how many volts are being
used and how many Amps are being drawn at any time. The PDU also
stores the information and can export the data into SNMP or XML
formats, producing graphs of usage over a 24 hour period, including
the accumulated KWh value.
For hosting companies this means that you can monitor customer’s
cabinets to ensure you are providing the correct Amps/KWh, and that
any additional equipment added into your customers cabinets can be
planned for and managed. This may open up a new revenue stream by
being able to accurately bill customers for their power consumption.
For customers using third party hosting companies, you can confirm
that the power you are paying for is provided and that the billing
information is correct. You never need pay too much for your power
again.
For remote lights out data centres, you can confirm that the power
is being provided correctly, assess the running costs of the site and also
provide confirmation that the correct power has been provided for all
your servers etc…
Accessible through a 10/100Mbps Ethernet connection, presented
on an RJ45 female, the unit is not password protected.
All the PDUs in this range are provided with a 3m lead, terminated
in a standard 16A or 32A BS4343 2P+E commando connector. These
PDUs are ideal for large server or communication racks where Current
(A) monitoring and remote alarms are a requirement. Monitoring is
provided via an integrated RJ-45 connection using TCP/IP. An inbuilt
web based GUI with HTTP/SNMP can provide either an XML or SNMP
output. The SNMP MiB is downloaded directly from the PDU itself. No
additional hardware or software is required.
These PDUs come with both tool-less fixings as well as standard
fixing wings. Built from mild steel, the enhanced range of up to 16
Amps also come with a suitable on/off switch complete with a neon
light to show the status of the switch. The 32 Amp PDUs so not have an
on/off switch, but still feature a neon light to show the status. All the
enhanced PDUs also include a built-in external metal earth stud to
correctly bond the units to cabinets.
Solution Profile
The host with the most
A small, third-party hosting company were having problems with supplying the right amount of
power into one of their customer’s cabinets. They had agreed to supply a 2KVA power feed, but the
electronic circuit relays seemed to keep tripping for no apparent reason, so they asked Black Box to
provide some consultancy to solve the issue. Black Box installed an intelligent IP controlled PDU
with power monitoring facilities built-in.
The hosting company discovered that although the original customer’s requirement had been for
2KVA, more equipment had been installed out of hours into the customer’s cabinet which took the
power requirement up to 2.5KVA. The end customer had not requested the additional power feed
to supply the extra equipment and so the extra load was causing the cirucit breakers to trip out at
peak load. The hosting company were able to upgrade the power feed to 3KVA, and this solved the
problem. As a result of the accuracy of the power metering, they were able to bill the customer for
the correct amount of power and are now able to interactively monitor all their customer’s cabinets
to ensure the correct power feeds are supplied and the correct billing information is invoiced.
The Enhanced IP Controlled PDU range offers the ability to control
power on a per port basis, all from the built-in web based GUI, support
HTTP. The range offers the ability to power cycle each port (Off / On /
Time Delayed / Reboot and Sequence start up) as well as offer power
monitoring – all from a web browser.
These PDUs also offer the ability monitor power consumption, on a
per port and per PDU basis.
Rather than assuming how much energy is consumed, you can now
be sure by confirming through the PDU, how many volts are being
used and how many Amps are being drawn at any time. The PDU also
stores the information and can export the data into SNMP or XML
formats, producing graphs of usage over a 24 hour period, including
the accumulated KWh value.
The PDU offers three levels of access which are identified by
entering a user name and a password:
- Viewer, User and an Administrator
- Viewer – Can view the current, voltage and KWh of the PDU
- User – Can view as above and also control each PDU socket
Administrator – Can View as above, and control each PDU socket as
per the User, and in addition can set up the users, network settings and
SNMP settings.
These options are accessible through a 10/100Mbps Ethernet
connection, presented on an RJ45 female.
The new Black Box range of intelligent power distribution units
give you the ability to manage all your power requirements from the
comfort of your desk. These PDU's have an IP browser interface builtin,
allowing the user to switch on, switch off or power cycle each
socket individually. Featuring both serial access as well as IP access,
these PDU's give you the connectivity and control you need. But more
than that, these PDU's also feature real time power usage display
through both the built-in LCD screen via push buttons, and via the web
browser interface. Information on voltage, current drawn etc is
available on a per port, and a per PDU basis. This information can really
improve capacity planning with in both the individual cabinet, and
throughout the entire data centre, simplifying the process of ensuring
adequate power supply and also providing remote access. By
employing a user configurable time delay per port, a PDU can
intelligently avoid brown-outs and black-outs. This feature can also be
used to provide power sequencing to a cabinet or rack.
Security
To reassure the data centre manager, access to the web browser
interface is protected by 256-bit AES encryption and strong passwords.
These PDU's also support advanced external permission management
by employing LDAP/S, RADIUS, and Active Directory ® , where required.
The browser interface supports HTTP, HTTPS, IPMI, SMASH-CLP, SH,
Telnet and SNMP.
