NEWS FROM
TDSB VOTES TO CUT
248 TEACHER POSITIONS
The Toronto District School Board has voted
in favour of cutting 248 secondary school
teacher positions.
Eight vice-principal positions were also
eliminated as Canada’s largest school board
tries to trim a $55-million deficit.
Special education teachers and guidance
staff, including librarians, are also among
the groups being hit by staff cuts.
The board, however, decided to add
nearly 63 elementary teacher positions and
338 in early childhood education.
The board said the secondary school cuts
OTTAWA – The federal government will
hold its long-awaited wireless spectrum
auction this November with an aim to have
at least four wireless-service providers in
every region of the country.
Ottawa hopes the move will help lower
consumer prices by opening the door for
upstart companies to enter a market that
and elementary school increases reflect the
shifting demographics and enrolment at the
board’s schools.
The job cuts are expected to save the
board $27 million.
“Though staffing decisions are always
difficult, this is an important step in putting
the Board on solid financial footing so that
we can continue offering students the best
school experiences,” said TDSB chairman
Chris Bolton.
SHIA LABEOUF STEPS UP
FEUD WITH ALEC BALDWIN
Shia LaBeouf has stepped up
his feud with Alec Baldwin
by leaking more private
emails after Baldwin, in a
recent rant, appeared to
question the Transformers
star’s talents.
The 26-year-old incurred
the wrath of Baldwin
last month after LaBeouf
quit their Broadway play
Orphans and then shared
email correspondence
between the 30 Rock star,
director Daniel Sullivan and
playwright Lyle Kessler on
his Twitter page, in a bid to
explain his decision to leave
the production.
Baldwin admitted
LaBeouf had disappointed
him with his actions, and
in a new interview with
Vulture.com, the 54-yearold
appeared to suggest that
the young actor was not cut
out for stage acting.
In the interview,
published online on
Tuesday, he said, “Some of
the greatest movie stars
had really serious theatre
careers and still do. And
many film actors, though,
who are purely film actors,
they’re kind of like celebrity
chefs.
“You hand them the
ingredients, and they whip
it up, and they cook it,
and they put it on a plate,
and they want a round of
applause. In the theatre, we
don’t just cook the food and
serve it.”
LaBeouf has now
responded to the critique
in his own way, publishing
more screen shots of emails
previously sent between the
pair and Sullivan.
The messages indicate
that Baldwin was ill
prepared for the show’s
intense rehearsals and was
not as focused as he should
have been.
In one email sent to
LaBeouf on Feb. 10, Baldwin
complains to the young
star about being “f---ing
tired,” prompting LaBeouf
to forward the exchange to
Sullivan and quip, “I think
he’s nervous.”
Another message, shared
online, highlights comments
Sullivan made to 1
Round LaBeouf,
which stated, “Don’t be too
surprised if Alec doesn’t
Client: TVO
Criticize This!
The origin story is common
in all forms of storytelling,
and with Oz the Great and
Powerful, the audience goes
back to the source into the
eye of the tornado.
A prequel to the novel
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
– on which the original 1939
film was based – Oz tells the
story of a carnival magician
(James Franco) who gets
whisked away to Oz and
is faced with the decision
of being a good man who
looks after himself, or a
great man who can help
save an enchanted land that
desperately needs it.
With his first trip into
kid-friendly fantasy fare,
director Sam Raimi crafts
REVIEW: OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL
a wonderfully colourful
movie that admittedly
moves a little slow at times,
but ultimately draws out
the child in us all. Starting
the film off in a sepia-toned
world, we are introduced to
the characters in a way that
puts us straight into dustbowl
desperation.
Later, as we are thrust
into the vibrant world, Raimi
gives us huge, detailed set
pieces rather than canned
CGI. The film ultimately
treats us to a healthy mix
of kid-friendly humour
along with the occasional
scare moment that Raimi
undoubtedly couldn’t resist,
making for a wonderful
cinematic blend.
Franco wears the role of
the low-rent, womanizing
LMD-GTA-Night-SS-7625x3-CLR-V2.pdf 1 13-02-25 10:53 AM
magician very well, and
as he goes on his journey,
discovers the man that he
can be, without giving up
his flair for the theatrical.
Mila Kunis tears up the
screen with gleeful abandon
as the Wicked Witch of the
West, and Michelle Williams
brings some dry wit to the
role of Glinda the Good
Witch as she tries to save Oz
and convince our hero that
he can save the day.
Featuring a loaded cast,
top-shelf production design
and 3-D visuals that add to
the overall experience of
the film, Oz the Great and
Powerful overcomes any
mild pacing problems and
makes for a fun trip to the
theatre.
If you can believe it, the
Toronto Maple Leafs have
already played half of their
games in this wacky
shortened season. They have
managed 15 wins in 24
games, yet many of those
wins haven’t come in what
many would call a convincing
fashion.
Take the last three games
for example. First, the Maple
rid their dressing rooms of
prejudice.
“We have no interest in
‘raising awareness’ at the
expense of the reputations of
the athletes, teams and
leagues that we work with.
When the circumstances have
called for us to speak out, we
have done so. We have done
so forcefully, clearly, and
unequivocally – but always
with a constructive goal in
mind,” wrote co-founder
Patrick Burke, a scout with the
Philadelphia Flyers and son of
Brian Burke. “Our goal is a
long-term, sustained, true
change to the current athletic
culture.” @lukefoxjukebox
Leafs had a two-goal thirdperiod
lead that they would
cough up. The Leafs would
eventually win in overtime.
On Monday, against the
MIKE FARWELL IS THE MORNING SPORTSCASTER ON
GLASS HALF FULL
The Leafs have reached the halfway point of this shortened
season with a record of 15-9, good for 30 points and fifth place in
the Eastern Conference. After 24 games last season, the Leafs
were 14-8-2, also good for 30 points, but second place in the
conference, behind Pittsburgh. Things didn’t end so well last
season, but, back then, 24 games was not even a third of the way
through the season. Sitting at the halfway point now, and given the
struggles of other teams like Philadelphia and Buffalo, there’s
every reason to believe the Leafs’ seven-year playoff drought is
about to end.
DREAM HOME
Forget the Field of Dreams, this Georgia mansion has it all. And by
all, we mean five bedrooms, nine bathrooms, an elevator, a
helicopter pad and, oh yeah, a full-sized baseball diamond in the
backyard. Talk about a home field advantage. The 10.8-acre estate
can be yours for a mere $9.7 million (U.S.).
@farwell590
the Leafs won.
“That’s probably the best
sign, since we haven’t been
playing our best and we
manage to keep winning
games,” said Head Coach
Randy Carlyle. “I think the
best is yet to come.”
The hope is this team can
sustain their recent success.
They have weapons
offensively, and the team is
fairly sound defensively. The
Leafs take on the Bruins in
Boston tonight. They are the
measuring stick right now for
where this Leafs team really
is.
Full marks to the coaching
staff and players on this team.
NEW YORK
BATTLES THE BULGE ...
Should Toronto Follow Suit
By NISEAN LORDE
for tonight Newspaper
New York City made headlines last September
when its mayoral-appointed health board
approved the first U.S. ban on large-size
sodas and other sugary drinks in fast food
chains, street carts, stadiums, theatres, delis
and cafeterias. The ban, which takes effect
March 12, will prohibit sugary drinks over 16
ounces (picture anything slightly larger than a
medium-size coffee at Tim Hortons).
The rules are iffy, but the ban will not apply
to alcohol, diet sodas or drinks that are more
than 70% juice. Fruit smoothies are okay – if
they don’t have added sweetener. Vending
machines and convenience stores will also not
be affected (7-Eleven’s Big Gulp will live on!).
But ordering a 2-litre bottle of your favourite
pop with a pizza delivery Don’t even think
about it!
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has
called for the ban as a way to reduce obesity
and its related health problems. About onethird
of Americans are obese and about
10% of U.S. health-care costs are tied to
obesity-related disease, according to the
Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development. On Bloomberg’s
website, he cites studies that show
more than half of NYC adults (58%) are
overweight or obese, and nearly 40% of
New York City’s public school students
in kindergarten through grade 8 are
overweight or obese.
Canada itself isn’t exempt from the
battle of the bulge. A recent study on
obesity published this past week in The
Canadian Journal of Public Health shows
that obesity rates are at an all-time high
in Canada, and that at least one-quarter
of Canadian adults are obese (with a
body mass index of 30 or greater). In
Toronto 31% of adults are considered
overweight and 15% are obese.
Since 46% of Torontonians are
considered overweight or obese,
what would happen if Toronto
were to follow in New York City’s
footsteps and implement a
similar
ban on large-size sugary drinks across the
city In an effort to combat obesity, would such
a ban be justifiable, or should food and drink
consumption be left up to each individual
“City governments and local public health
agencies have an important role to play in
leading the establishment of healthy urban
food environments on behalf of the public
good, including enacting health-promoting
local policies,” says Lisa Swimmer, a Nutrition
Promotion Consultant at Toronto Public Health.
“TPH has been active for years in encouraging
healthy drink choices in Toronto. We have
worked with various City departments, the
Toronto school boards and the province of
“TRYING TO STOP
OBESITY, FROM EITHER
THE INDIVIDUAL’S
PERSPECTIVE
OR THE PUBLIC HEALTH
PERSPECTIVE,
IS AS OVERWHELMING
AS TRYING TO STOP
THE FLOODING WATERS
OF A TIDAL WAVE”
Ontario on campaigns, policies and initiatives
to curb the consumption of sugary drinks.
“We do not yet know what the impact of the
ban on large-sized sugary drinks in New York
City eateries will be. This is a new and exciting
type of food policy that has not yet been
broadly studied. We will monitor the results
and health impacts before taking any local
action in Toronto.”
Although banning sugary drinks would be
beneficial for overall public health, it wouldn’t
necessarily be beneficial toward reducing the
obesity epidemic, according to Denis Collier,
a Toronto-based registered dietitian and
certified exercise physiologist.
“Trying to stop obesity, from either the
individual’s perspective or the public health
perspective, is as overwhelming as trying to
stop the flooding waters of a tidal wave,” says
Collier.
So what is the best way to combat the battle
of the bulge Remember, Mayor Rob Ford
himself last year publicly attempted to drop 50
pounds but later announced that he was off his
diet and would likely miss his target (Ford did
manage to slim down to 313 pounds from his
starting point of 330). Collier compares losing
weight to utilizing sandbags to stop a flood
– with eating right and exercise just being
different forms of sandbags.
“These days we are learning about the
importance of new sandbags in the fight
against the tidal wave of obesity – like sleep,
stress, even the environment itself. What
winds up happening is unproductive debates
about which sandbag is most important.
Our only hope against the tidal wave of the
obesity epidemic is to get all the
appropriate sandbags in place,” says
Collier. “A ban on extra- large sugary
drinks represents one s a n d b a g .
To stop the obesity
epidemic,
we are going to need a whole
bunch of sandbags.”

To Mrs. Seatsaver: Under no circumstances does
one have the right to “save” a seat for someone.
If you wish to spend time with your husband on
the way home, you meet outside the train and
board the train at the same time and hope for
the best in getting seats together. You could do
what I do and arrive on the platform a full 10
minutes before the scheduled departure time to
increase the chances of getting a seat.
To The Lady on the Train: The season is turning
once again in this city. And as always, the turning
is measured in the temperature of the breeze
and by the slant of the sun. It is measured by the
sightings of birds and squirrels and the greening
of patchy lawns. Between squinting in the thin
sun and the diminishing brown snow banks we
are aware of the coming spring. Perhaps it is
these things that stirs in our blood and awakens
some hope within us. Perhaps it is some unseen
magic or shift in gravity that whispers to some
forgotten promise that lifts our chins up from
our chests. The city stands a little taller and
further out from ourselves. We shed the first
layer of hibernation from our souls - it falls from
our shoulders as we squint and shield our eyes
from the sun as if seeing it for the first time. It
is still cold and we remain wrapped for the time
being. But the earth is whispering to us - soon, I
promise, soon. The Man in the Station
@mrs.seatsaver: I think seat saving is fine as
long as there are other equally desirable seat
sorry, you should give it to the people that
are there. So you should tell your husband to
