DRAGONS NO. 2 IN NJCAA IN ALL-TIME WINS
With their 76-69 victory over Seward County on Jan. 3, 2010, the Hutchinson
Community College men’s basketball team moved past Moberly Area Community
College for second place on the NJCAA all-time wins list.
The Blue Dragons are 1,566-545, a winning percentage
of .742 in their 80th season of men’s basketball.
HCC played its 2,100th game on Dec. 4 vs.
Harcum College.
The Blue Dragons trail only Southeastern Iowa in
all-time wins. Southeastern Iowa became the first
NJCAA program to win 1,500 games in the 2007-08 season.
With a 79-53 victory over Labette on Nov. 1, 2008, the Blue Dragons became
only the third NJCAA program to post 1,500 victories.
BLUE DRAGONS IN THE NATIONAL POLLS
The Blue Dragons fell one spot to No. 8 in this
week’s NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball poll despite
two decisive victories last week.
HCC spent two weeks at No. 1 after earning that
designation for the first time in 18 years on Jan. 4.
The last time that Hutchinson was ranked No. 1 in
a regular season poll was on Jan. 7, 1992. The latest
No. 1 national ranking is only the third NJCAA No. 1
ranking since 1975.
Butler knocked Hutchinson off the top perch with a
55-51 on Jan. 15 at El Dorado.
The 1974-75 Blue Dragons, coached by Dick Gisel,
started their season 24-0. That Blue Dragon team finished 32-3, won the Jayhawk
West and Region VI crowns and finished eighth in the 1975 NJCAA Tournament.
The Blue Dragons were No. 4 in the preseason poll and had been No. 2 for the
previous three polls before their climb to the top rung of the rankings ladder.
The Blue Dragons extended their streak of appearing in the NJCAA Division I
Men’s basketball poll to 21 weeks, dating back to last season.
HCC opened the season ranked No. 4 in the preseason poll.
ECK FIRST EVER IN NJCAA TO TAKE FOUR TEAMS TO NO. 1
When the Blue Dragons earned their first No. 1 ranking on Jan. 4, HCC became
the fourth team that Hutchinson head coach Steve Eck had led to a No. 1 national
ranking.
Eck has also coached at Butler County, Redlands Community College and
Cowley College. In each of those stops, Eck has taken a team to the top rung on
the rankings ladder.
He is the only coach in NJCAA history to coach four No. 1 teams at four different
schools.
Eck has coached both Butler and Cowley to Region VI championship games
and has led Redlands to a Division II national championship and a Division I
national runner-up finish.
2010-11 BLUE DRAGONS ONCE AGAIN SHOWING DEFENSIVE PROWESS
One of the characteristics of a Steve Eckcoached
team is team defense. The 2010-11 Blue
Dragons are showing those same traits.
Through 23 games, the Blue Dragons currently
rank second in program history in defensive field
goal percentage at 37.8 percent (553 of 1,564). The
Dragons are fifth in defensive 3-point percentage at
28.0 percent (123 of 439).
The Blue Dragons currently rank fourth in the
Jayhawk Conference in scoring defense at 68.3
points per game. The Dragons rank second in the
league in defensive field goal percentage and fourth
in defensive 3-point percentage.
In Eck’s first season at Hutchinson, the 2009-10
Blue Dragons set the standard for defensive efficiency.
Eck’s first Blue Dragon team is the program
record holder in defensive field-goal percentage at
37.4 percent and in defensive 3-point percentage at
24.3 percent.
BLUE DRAGONS’ 17 WINS TO START SEASON
IS THIRD BEST IN PROGRAM HISTORY
Hutchinson’s 55-51 loss to Butler on Jan. 15
snapped the Blue Dragons’ 17-game winning
streak to start the season.
That 17-0 start was the third-best start in the program’s
80-year history.
The 1974-75 Blue Dragons, coached by Dick Gisel, have the record for the
best start ever, going 24-0 before finishing 32-3, as Region VI champions and
eighth in the NJCAA Tournament.
The 1987-88 national champion Blue Dragons got off to a 23-0 start, which is
second best.
The Jan. 12 win over Garden City helped the 2010-11 team to surpass the
2003-04 team’s 16-0 beginning the season. That team finished 31-2, won the
Jayhawk West and advanced all the way to the Region VI semifinals.
DRAGONS FIVE-STRAIGHT GAMES OF 50-PERCENT SHOOTING
The Blue Dragons had a streak of five consecutive games of shooting 50 percent
or better snapped by Dodge City on Jan. 8.
Over that five-game stretch, The Blue Dragons are averaged 96.4 points and
are shot 56.1 percent (171 of 305).
During the streak, HCC shot a streak-best and season-high-tying 59.7 percent
against Central Nebraska on Dec. 10. The Dragons also reached the 59-percent
against Northwest-Shoals on Dec. 3
Hutchinson shot 51.4 percent in a 117-point outburst against Harcum College
on Dec. 4, 54.4 percent against Allen County on Dec. 11 and 56.6 percent against
Seward County on Wednesday night.
HCC has shot 50 percent or better in 7 of 15 games this season and has shot
less than 40 percent in only one game.
BLUE DRAGON GETTING MAJOR BENCH CONTRIBUTIONS
Through the first 23 games, the Blue Dragon bench is averaging 32.9 points
per game. That’s an improvement of 5.1 points per game from last year’s team
that averaged 27.8 points.
The 2010-11 Blue Dragons have a much-deeper bench.
HCC’s bench scored the first 19 points of HCC’s 72-61 victory over Garden City
on Jan. 12.
HOME COOKING GOOD TO BLUE DRAGONS
The Blue Dragons have always enjoyed a strong home-court advantage in the
7,000-seat Hutchinson Sports Arena.
With their 70-60 victory over Cloud County on Jan. 14, 2006, the Blue Dragons
earned their 700th regular-season victory in the famed basketball venue.
Moving into the Sports Arena in the 1952-53 season, the Blue Dragons have
amassed a 795-132 record. In the 59 years that Hutchinson has called the Sports
Arena home; HCC has averaged 13.4 wins at home.
They went undefeated through an entire home season seven times (1958-59,
1959-60, 1973-74, 1974-75, 1981-82, 1987-88, 2003-04).
The 2010 Blue Dragons went 19-1 at the Sports Arena this season, which tied
for the third-most home victories in program history with the 2003 Blue Dragons.
The 2004 Blue Dragons own the record for most home wins in a season with 21.
Two other teams, the 1996 and 1992 Blue Dragons had 20 home wins.
Before the Sports Arena, HCC played at Memorial (Convention) Hall from 1928
to 1952 where the Blue Dragons were 112-50.
Region VI champion Butler and Barton rounded out
the top five of the west preseason poll. Dodge City,
Cloud County, Pratt and Colby are picks six through
nine.
SEASON-OPENING SUCCESS
The Blue Dragons have been hard to beat on opening night over the years.
Hutchinson is 61-19 in season openers. The Blue Dragons defeated Fort Scott
80-48 on Nov. 4 to open the 2010-11 season.
The Blue Dragons had an 11-game season-opening winning streak snapped in
2007 after a 97-90 loss to Division II, 21st-ranked Hamilton College. Before that
loss, the last season-opening loss was a 61-60 setback to then-Division II Rose
Barclay was 56 set in 1992, an 88-32 win over Hesston College.
2010-2011 SEASON PREVIEW
HCC returns starting guards Joe Mitchell and Dylan Frantz and forward Bruce
Reed. Blue Dragon fans will also get a much-anticipated first look at forward
Robert Goff, who had to sit out last season after transferring from Cowley College.
Mitchell (6-foot-1, Wichita Southeast) was the Jayhawk West Freshman of the
Year after leading the Blue Dragons in scoring at 16.1 points per game (530 points).
Mitchell scored in double figures in 32 of 33 games, shooting 50 percent overall and
33.7 percent from 3-point range. Mitchell also had a team-high 82 assists.
Reed (6-6, Olathe East) was the team’s leading rebounder last season at 6.73
boards per game (222) and shot 47.6 percent from the floor.
Frantz (6-2, Phillipsburg) was a defensive stopper who gained confidence on
the offensive side of the floor. Frantz averaged 5.9 points and had 77 assists.
Goff (6-9, Indianapolis) could miss time in the first semester with an injury. At
Cowley in 2008-09, Goff averaged 9.2 points and shot 60.9 percent from the floor.
HCC has three point guards heading into the season. Mitchell will be the sophomore
of the group with De’Ontae Hoods (6-4, Kansas City Harmon) and Mark
Braden (6-5, Kansas City, Mo.). All three can slide over to the 2-guard position.
Eck will have plenty of players to choose from at the 2 and 3 spots. Frantz,
Mitchell, Hooks, Reed, Kervens Calixte (6-3, Port Charlotte, Fla.), Stuart Sullivan
(6-7, Red Oak, Okla.) and William Nelson (6-6, Acadiana, La./Baton Rouge CC)
will be at those positions.
The use of Mitchell as a point or shooting guard will depend on what the Blue
Dragons need and what lineup is on the floor at a particular time.
Eck knows he must address the rebounding problems from last season. The
2010-11 Blue Dragons are bigger, longer and thicker in the paint.
Along with Goff, Nelson, Quantel Denson (6-9, 230, Grandview, Mo.) and Ryan
Schultz (6-5, 200, Maize) will improve the rebounding.
