Information for Volunteers
of Paired Reading at
New College Leicester
Help us to help our students.
Your role as a reading volunteer is to help your Reading Partners enjoy reading and
improve their reading ability through whichever way works best for you both.
Volunteers spend 1 hour per week (or more if they are able) to support 2 students
on a one-to-one basis for 30 minutes each. The students will be identified by the
school as being struggling readers and needing extra support. They are mainly from
the lower school in year 7 or 8 (11 or 12 year olds).
You will have a contact within the school who will be able to support and advise you
and answer any questions you may have.
Reading sessions will take place in the college library where you will have access
to a wide range of materials and have other adults around all of the time.
It is important that the reading sessions are fun, not only for the student but also
for you!
There will be a ‘training’ opportunity on a Wednesday or Thursday where you will
be given all the information you need to support the students in their reading.
Can you make a difference to the lives of our young people
If you are interested in joining our growing team or require more
information, please contact Allan Dunsmore, Project Development Manager
Tuesday to Thursday, telephone 0116 231 8517 Ext. 193.
Many thanks, we look forward to meeting you at New College Leicester.
Academic Mentoring
at New College
What is an Academic Mentor
Academic Mentors will meet with a student on a 1:1 basis about three times per term to:
Listen
Encourage
Monitor progress towards academic targets
Share your experience and act as a positive role model
Point to other sources of support or referral if required
These meetings will last about 20 minutes. A Mentor is likely to make a minimum
commitment of 1 hour to talk to two students in that time, about three times per term.
In an afternoon session a Mentor could probably see 5 students.
Who are Academic Mentors
Academic Mentors are members of D.M.U. or the community who have volunteered
to support a student at New College Leicester on a regular basis. Mentors will be:
Good communicators
Excellent and active listeners
Able to show a sympathetic approach to sensitive issues
Able to maintain confidentiality
What is Involved
Academic Mentors will agree to:
Travel to New College Leicester to meet students.
Undertake an initial short briefing session.
Have regular meetings with their mentee usually two to three times per term and
keep brief records of progress towards academic targets.
New College Leicester in return will provide Mentors with appropriate experiences
and then references. These can be forwarded to the University to gain further
accreditation via the Higher Education Achievement Award.
The Club was formed in September 1996 to provide organised, leisure-time activity
for the local youngsters in New Parks and the surrounding areas, to help channel
their energies in a positive direction; The Allexton Centre was offered as a meeting
place and New Parks Community College provided playing space for the members
– hence the Club name, Allexton & New Parks.
The Club’s subsequent growth and success could not have been foreseen; they
and ‘inclusive’ football.
In 2007 Leicester City Council & LRCFA, with the Football Foundation and other
funding assistance, pressed ahead with a Financial Investment Strategy to provide
updated football facilities at locations throughout the city; Allexton & New Parks FC
