Aris Prabawa, 2008
Indonesian artist Aris Prabawa explores the
power of the Indonesian military and the sordid
role they play in Indonesian society. The military
and business figures in the painting works have
the heads of predatory animals illustrating the
greed, violence and essential loss of humanity
characterising the culture of militarism of
which they are a part.
Image: Binondo, Manila (excerpt from video In 1966 the
Beatles Came to Manila) Robert Nery, 2010
This installation by The Boondocks is composed
of a flow chart spread over the floor and four
walls of the gallery, a video work In 1966 The
Beatles Came To Manila, about their first and
only performance in a developing country,
and a second video Exterior, Manila, a silent
contemporary film about Manila at night-time.
using art as a tool for children’s development
and advancement. This project provided an
opportunity for children to produce a body
of work through various mediums such as
painting and drawing whilst also learning to
speak Spanish in the process.
THE BLACK MADONNA
BOOK YOUR CLASS IN
FOR A GUIDED TOUR
Image: Black Madonna 5, Karla Dickens
Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens revisits a
subliminal, historical, and spiritual memory.
Thirty new mixed media works on canvas,
The Black Madonna is more than just a
black woman; it should be read as a female
creative spiritual force, a universal mother
figure. The form of the female spirit in
these new works moves through a number
of compositions and figurations in Karla’s
expression: Christian icon, Buddhist form,
Mirror Mimih figure among others.
Each artwork’s concept will be examined
during the tour, and discussions will focus
on different forms of artistic expression.
The guided tours will also focus on the
conceptual framework and the four frames,
specifically the cultural frame, highlighting
the importance of multicultural practice in
Australian contemporary art.
COMING UP
During term two, watch out for news of a well-known resident female hip hop artist who will be
available for workshops and performances. And the boys from Zeal Theatre will be spending some
time at the Casula Powerhouse too.
We’ll also be releasing details of an exciting Sydney Theatre Company and Liverpool community
performance scheduled for Friday 24 September. Local community members and high school
students are invited to participate. To be called Leviathan, the production will be based on the
book Leviathan: The Unauthorised Biography of Sydney by John Birmingham.
Be a part of this exciting project by joining the workshops during terms one-three.
LEVIATHAN
By John Birmingham
A Sydney Theatre Company Production
“Leviathan” is a unique opportunity for
professional and non-professional performers
from all backgrounds to unite in one giant
presentation of this monster city’s history. The
novel “Leviathan” by John Birmingham is a
sprawling non-fictional examination of Sydney,
blending factual recreations of early penal
settlement, brutal accounts of racism and
abuse, and powerful stories of immigration.
Sydney Theatre Company’s resident director
Stefo Nantsou will facilitate the production, to
be performed by the STC Resident Ensemble
and numerous community groups and
students.
JIMMY LITTLE FOUNDATION
The Jimmy Little foundation runs a program
for indigenous students called Thumbs Up!
In early March, they ran the program at Miller
Technology High School with great success.
Students composed and recorded a song and
shot a video. Healthy eating and living was the
theme and the students enjoyed their two
days immensely.
We will be scheduling more of these workshops.
Call Dallas Lewis if you have students
who you think would like to participate.
PERFORMING ARTS
TEACHERS NETWORK
You can share your ideas through the
emerging local performing arts teachers’
network. We will meet for just one hour
once a term at the Casula Powerhouse.
Each gathering will have a guest or two.
There will be discussion on ways that we
might all collaborate to provide a richer
experience for our young people.
Thank you to those who have participated already
this year and we hope to see more of you in 2010
for what will continue to be a fantastic year of Visual
and Performing Arts at Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre.
