Netlinks Networking Event Celebrates 15th Anniversary
Now in its 15th year, the 2010 Nā Kukui Netlinks
event was held in the Monarch Room at the historic
Royal Hawaiian Hotel on April 15, 2010. The event
was sponsored by TIM International Alumni Association
(TIMI). Eighty TIM students and seventy‐five
travel industry executives participated in the speed
networking event.
Since 1995, TIM students have networked with
travel industry executives who share their knowledge
and experiences, serve as mentors, and offer
professional career advice. Throughout the years,
many students have gained internships and jobs as a
result of their attendance at Netlinks.
The program included an awards ceremony that
honored nine outstanding TIM students for their academic
excellence and leadership and Dr. Ivan Wen
for his dedication to his students through his teaching
and mentorship. The awards were sponsored by
the following donors: the Halekūlani Hotel, Hawai‘i
Hotel & Lodging Association, the Hawai‘i Visitors &
TIM Graduates 125 Students
By August, 75 students will have earned the TIM BS degree
in the Spring and Summer semesters. Each semester TIM
International Alumni Association hosts a graduation reception
to celebrate their achievements. The TIM School graduated
a total of 125 graduates during this academic year.
As one of the twelve largest hospitality and tourism schools
in the country, the TIM School is a valuable resource to serve
Hawai‘i’s largest industry by helping to remedy Hawai‘i’s
tourism workforce shortage needs. With 800 mandatory
hours of internship, various club activities and conferences,
seminars, and the multiple networking opportunities provided
by the TIM School, students are able to gain experience
from both inside and outside the classroom to prepare
them for the industry.
Po‘okela Students' Hawaiian Cultural Experience
The TIM School incorporates Hawaiian cultural values
within its curriculum. In addition, the Po‘okela
(excellence) Program focuses on enhancing students’
knowledge and skills outside the classroom.
In April, students in the Po‘okela Program volunteered at
a private lo‘i (taro patch) near the North Shore. After
learning of the cultural significance of taro as the symbol
of life to the Native Hawaiians, they harvested the taro
and learned of its many uses. They also visited the largest
fishpond on O‘ahu called Moli‘i. This fishpond is currently
a tourist attraction on Kualoa Ranch land.
In the University of Hawai‘i’s 2002‐2010 Strategic Plan one
goal is to “promote environmentally and culturally sensitive
economic development in services, high technology, diversified
agriculture, tourism and emerging sectors.” TIM graduates
learn about travel industry business practices, sustainable
tourism, service to the community and Hawaiian cultural
management through their courses and internships.
Over the years, the TIM School has succeeded in matriculating
more local high school students through six Academies
of Hospitality and Tourism on three islands, greater articulation
with the community colleges and establishing an online
certificate program.
TIM Students Headed to Osaka for Summer Internship
TIM students have a number of opportunities to intern off island including Asia, Alaska, Bali, California,
Florida, Yellowstone Park, Kaua‘i, Maui, and the Big Island. This summer, one group will be interning
at Osaka, Japan. Mathew Tanaka, Michael Caputo, and Brandon Shiira have been selected as
food and beverage trainees at the Hyatt Regency Osaka, where they will be working in various food
service operations, including the outdoor Pergola Restaurant.
This is the third summer that Hyatt Regency Osaka internships were offered to TIM students. TIM
Pictured: Hyatt Regency Osaka
alumnus Thomas Zaleski (‘95), former Assistant Food and Beverage Director, arranged the internships.
In previous years, Roland Kam (‘09), John Honda (‘09), Evan Yamashita (‘09) and Andrew Moser‐Samson (‘09)
gained international hospitality experience and developed language skills from participating.
As an example of agriculture tourism, edu‐tourism, volunteer
tourism, and cultural tourism, experiences like these
enable the students to reflect upon the importance of authenticity
and to become more sensitized on how to preserve
the host culture at tourist destinations.
In February, the Club Managers Association of America (CMAA)
student members attended the Annual CMAA National Conference
in San Diego, CA. While at the week‐long conference we attended
many seminars about the private club industry, including
membership marketing, becoming leaders, professional presence
and other club‐related areas. We also attended career opportunity
showcases, resume critiques, and the golf industry
show. This conference was a great opportunity for us to network
with industry professionals and fellow students, learn more
about the club industry and further our career goals.
TIMSA International Convention in Vegas
In March, twelve members of the Travel Industry Management
Student Association (TIMSA) travelled to Las Vegas, Nevada for
the International Hospitality Week convention, which included
the Hotel World Food & Beverage Show, the International Restaurant
Show, and the Nightclub & Bar Convention and Tradeshow.
At the convention we were able to interact with various
vendors and see the latest equipment.
We also scheduled multiple site inspections at various mega
scale hotels including the MGM Grand, Wynn, Mandalay Bay Hotel,
Four Seasons Las Vegas and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel.
The site inspections helped us to compare the major differences
between hotel operations
in Las Vegas and
Hawai‘i.
to learn that the Grand Wailea was Maui’s first luxury
hotel and has the largest ballroom on the island at
28,000 sq ft. We later explored Lahaina town and
watched the popular stage production Ulalena. Early
Sunday morning, we drove to Haleakalā National Park.
We spent the rest of the day at Kama‘ole Beach Park
where we barbequed and reflected upon our exciting
