Protection <strong>in</strong> Connection<br />
with Chemical Production<br />
The chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry uses raw materials for energy, especially crude oil, gas <strong>and</strong><br />
coal (to a smaller extent), as both a power source <strong>and</strong> for production. It accounts for<br />
30% of <strong>the</strong> total global <strong>in</strong>dustrial consumption of power <strong>and</strong> raw materials. However, at<br />
<strong>the</strong> same time, it provides a wide range of products that make it possible to produce<br />
power <strong>in</strong> environmentally friendly ways (e.g. raw materials for <strong>the</strong> production of solar<br />
panels), to store energy (batteries) <strong>and</strong> to save energy (e.g. <strong>in</strong>sulation materials <strong>and</strong><br />
light-weight materials that save energy dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir transport). Therefore, chemical<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry products often contribute to power sav<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>and</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g emissions <strong>in</strong><br />
o<strong>the</strong>r sectors.<br />
Intensive chemical research <strong>and</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustrial biotechnology 1 ,<br />
reaction processes 2 <strong>and</strong> material technologies are ma<strong>in</strong>ly focused on improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> competitiveness, economic acceptability <strong>and</strong> accountability of <strong>the</strong> chemical<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry. The impulse for implement<strong>in</strong>g ecological <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong>s <strong>and</strong> economic<br />
technologies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry is fur<strong>the</strong>r enhanced by <strong>the</strong> effort to reduce<br />
<strong>the</strong> strong dependence of <strong>the</strong> raw material base of chemical products on fossil fuels<br />
<strong>and</strong> energy. The potential of energy <strong>and</strong> raw material sav<strong>in</strong>gs has not been completely<br />
realized; <strong>the</strong>re are still new research projects com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
that are aimed at environmental protection <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development.<br />
At <strong>the</strong> end of 2005, The <strong>Czech</strong> Technology Platform for Susta<strong>in</strong>able Chemistry<br />
was established (SusChem ČR). It is part of The European Technology Platform for<br />
Susta<strong>in</strong>able Chemistry (SUSCHEM). The platform’s basic objectives <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>the</strong> competitiveness of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry, form<strong>in</strong>g a bridge between science,<br />
research <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field of chemistry, promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative activities <strong>and</strong><br />
scientific-technical development <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> chemical <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong><br />
Republic <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> activities of SUSCHEM. In 2006, The <strong>Czech</strong><br />
