5 | Material Efficiency<br />

Climatic changes require an immediate response <strong>and</strong> identification of priorities<br />

for <strong>the</strong> future development of technology. In <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic, many research<br />

centres study <strong>the</strong> impacts of <strong>and</strong> possible solutions to climatic changes. There are also<br />

procedures known <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> private sector that contribute to solv<strong>in</strong>g problems associated<br />

with climatic changes.<br />

The development of photovoltaic systems is <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic.<br />

The third generation of PVS uses new low-cost technologies based on very efficient<br />

pr<strong>in</strong>ciples of convert<strong>in</strong>g solar radiation <strong>in</strong>to electricity.<br />

New technologies for prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g nano-fibres <strong>and</strong> research <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

field of absorbents based on natural materials brought about a new patent for<br />

catch<strong>in</strong>g pollutants.<br />

The research deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> impacts of climatic changes on forest eco-systems<br />

<strong>in</strong> a model workplace <strong>in</strong> Moravskoslezské Beskydy ref<strong>in</strong>es current <strong>in</strong>formation on <strong>the</strong><br />

overall impact of climatic changes <strong>in</strong> various models. Thanks to ample experimental<br />

equipment, <strong>in</strong>novative approaches <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> complexity of performed experiments, <strong>the</strong><br />

workplace is also part of an <strong>in</strong>ternational network for monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> flow of materials<br />

<strong>and</strong> energies, FLUXNET.<br />

5.1 | The development of photovoltaic<br />

technologies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic<br />

Interest <strong>in</strong> convert<strong>in</strong>g solar energy <strong>in</strong>to electricity has sharply <strong>in</strong>creased <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Czech</strong> Republic. Thanks to <strong>the</strong> implementation of <strong>the</strong> redemption prices system <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>stalled capacity grew from 0.9 MWp at <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

2006 to 55 MWp at <strong>the</strong> end of 2008. Chapter 2.2.4 Photovoltaic power plants, deals<br />

with power production by us<strong>in</strong>g PVS.
