2.4.2 | Integrated gasification comb<strong>in</strong>ed cycle<br />
Power plants with an <strong>in</strong>tegrated gasification comb<strong>in</strong>ed cycle are considered<br />
<strong>the</strong> cleanest <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> most effective methods for us<strong>in</strong>g coal. IGCC systems can be<br />
optimised for various types of fuel, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g coal, petroleum (oil), coke, biomass <strong>and</strong><br />
communal waste. Dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> process of IGCC, appropriate fuel is transformed <strong>in</strong>to gas<br />
with high hydrogen content. Then, <strong>the</strong> gas is used as fuel for combustion gas turb<strong>in</strong>es.<br />
Today’s energy efficiency of <strong>the</strong>se power plants fluctuates between 40 <strong>and</strong> 45%. Future<br />
combustion turb<strong>in</strong>e research <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r expected improvements will <strong>in</strong>crease this<br />
efficiency beyond 50%.<br />
Comparison to previous types of pulverized coal power plants, <strong>the</strong>se IGCC power<br />
plants are more expensive <strong>and</strong> still require additional study. Their advantage, however,<br />
lies <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir follow<strong>in</strong>g strict ecological limits.<br />
2.5 | Technology for CO 2 capture <strong>and</strong> storage<br />
Carbon capture <strong>and</strong> storage is a technology that has a potential to achieve high<br />
reductions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> emissions of CO 2 . CCS can be applied anywhere that a large amount<br />
of CO 2 is created, but it is supposed to f<strong>in</strong>d its primary use <strong>in</strong> energy. Manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
