2 | <strong>Environmental</strong>ly Friendly<br />
Generation of Heat <strong>and</strong> Electric Energy<br />
The m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of fossil fuels, which are a basic element for produc<strong>in</strong>g heat <strong>and</strong> electric<br />
energy, negatively impacts <strong>the</strong> environment. The fossil fuels utilization is a primary<br />
source of greenhouse gas emissions, <strong>and</strong> as a result of air pollutant emissions, it also<br />
negatively impacts human health, soils <strong>and</strong> forest st<strong>and</strong>s. Resources of primary raw<br />
materials for energy are constantly gett<strong>in</strong>g smaller.<br />
The <strong>Czech</strong> Republic places emphasis on <strong>the</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able development of energy,<br />
namely with what technology <strong>and</strong> with what consequences for <strong>the</strong> environment that<br />
all energy generation process will have. Reduction of <strong>the</strong> emissions of particulate<br />
matters <strong>and</strong> desulphurization, <strong>and</strong> eventually denitrification of <strong>the</strong>rmal power<br />
plants <strong>and</strong> large heat stations have already occurred <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic. Today,<br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong>s <strong>in</strong> equipment are happen<strong>in</strong>g at a rapid pace. The purpose of <strong>the</strong>se<br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong>s is to reduce emissions through more efficient generation.<br />
However, none of <strong>the</strong>se measures will elim<strong>in</strong>ate <strong>the</strong> negative <strong>in</strong>fluences of <strong>the</strong><br />
generation of electricity <strong>and</strong> heat on <strong>the</strong> environment from <strong>the</strong> long-term po<strong>in</strong>t of<br />
view. Ano<strong>the</strong>r purpose of <strong>the</strong>se <strong><strong>in</strong>novation</strong>s is, <strong>the</strong>refore, to ensure that greenhouse<br />
gas concentrations <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> atmosphere become stabilized at a level that would not<br />
be hazardous ei<strong>the</strong>r to mank<strong>in</strong>d or to <strong>the</strong> climate 1 .<br />
Consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> purposes that are specified for <strong>the</strong> area of energy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> State<br />
<strong>Environmental</strong> Policy of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Republic, energy sources that ei<strong>the</strong>r have no or only<br />
a negligible negative <strong>in</strong>fluence on <strong>the</strong> environment are becom<strong>in</strong>g more important.<br />
This <strong>in</strong>cludes nuclear energy <strong>and</strong> renewable energy sources: <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> energy from<br />
water, w<strong>in</strong>d, sun, biomass, biofuel <strong>and</strong> geo<strong>the</strong>rmal energy.<br />
