For <strong>the</strong> aforementioned reasons, <strong>the</strong> quality of sludge stored <strong>in</strong> settl<strong>in</strong>g pits needs<br />
to be exam<strong>in</strong>ed before m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Research on <strong>the</strong> cok<strong>in</strong>g properties of coal sludge blends<br />
revealed that <strong>the</strong> sludge extracted from outdoor settl<strong>in</strong>g pits can be used <strong>in</strong> limited<br />
quantities (approximately 10% of <strong>the</strong> reflotation product <strong>and</strong> 90% of coal) for <strong>the</strong><br />
production of coal suitable for cok<strong>in</strong>g without affect<strong>in</strong>g o<strong>the</strong>r elements such as ash or<br />
water content.<br />
The reflotation technology is used <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ostrava-Karv<strong>in</strong>á District <strong>and</strong> helps with<br />
<strong>the</strong> utilisation of settled coal sludge for <strong>the</strong> production of flotation concentrates.<br />
These are <strong>the</strong>n used to prepare coal suitable for cok<strong>in</strong>g or for use as fuel for mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
energy.<br />
8.5 | M<strong>in</strong>eral biotechnologies<br />
Progressive technologies <strong>in</strong> waste management <strong>in</strong>clude m<strong>in</strong>eral biotechnologies.<br />
State-of-<strong>the</strong>-art knowledge <strong>in</strong> this field has moved from research activities to practical<br />
applications. The area of utilisation of biotechnologies <strong>in</strong> waste management is still<br />
be<strong>in</strong>g exp<strong>and</strong>ed to <strong>in</strong>clude new options.<br />
M<strong>in</strong>eral biotechnologies <strong>in</strong>clude technological processes that use micro-organisms<br />
or <strong>the</strong>ir metabolic products dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> treatment or process<strong>in</strong>g of waste materials.<br />
Soil contam<strong>in</strong>ated by crude oil products <strong>and</strong> pesticides can be decontam<strong>in</strong>ated by biodegradation.<br />
A bio-preparation of mixed bacterial cultures that help to accelerate<br />
<strong>the</strong> decomposition of contam<strong>in</strong>ants <strong>in</strong> waste is applied on a prepared material. Biodegradation<br />
can be performed ei<strong>the</strong>r at <strong>the</strong> place of contam<strong>in</strong>ation (<strong>in</strong>-situ) or after<br />
<strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g out or removal of contam<strong>in</strong>ated media (ex-situ).<br />
Bio-flotation has proven especially effective for <strong>the</strong> desulphurisation of f<strong>in</strong>e-gra<strong>in</strong><br />
coal from which it is possible to float out pyrite.<br />
Bio-flocculation is one of <strong>the</strong> available methods for process<strong>in</strong>g very f<strong>in</strong>e<br />
non-homogenous waste coal sludge. The pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of this process consists <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
agglomeration of ultra-f<strong>in</strong>e m<strong>in</strong>eral components by <strong>the</strong> actuation of bio-flocculants 9 .<br />
The result<strong>in</strong>g flakes are separated from <strong>the</strong> suspension by sedimentation or filtration.<br />
Through bio-flocculation, a significant proportion of very f<strong>in</strong>e gra<strong>in</strong>s can be removed,<br />
which has a positive effect on <strong>the</strong> speed, efficiency <strong>and</strong> reduction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> power <strong>in</strong>tensity<br />
of <strong>the</strong> filtration <strong>and</strong> sedimentation processes.<br />
