265 NoC-Network of Expert Centres The Network of Expert Centres 761 is a collaboration of “centres with expertise <strong>in</strong> digital arts and humanities research and scholarship, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g practice-led research.” The areas of research expertise <strong>in</strong>clude “data creation, curation, preservation, management (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g rights and legal issues), access and dissem<strong>in</strong>ation, and methodologies of data use and re-use.” Membership <strong>in</strong> NoC is open to centers <strong>in</strong> Great Brita<strong>in</strong> and Ireland that have a formal <strong>in</strong>stitutional status, recognized expertise <strong>in</strong> digital arts and humanities, a history of persistence, and an <strong>in</strong>stitutional or <strong>in</strong>ter<strong>in</strong>stitutional focus of activity. Currently participat<strong>in</strong>g organizations <strong>in</strong>clude the Archaeology Data Service (ADS), the Centre for Comput<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Humanities (CCH), the Centre for Data Digitization and Analysis (CDDA), the Digital Design Studio (DDS), the History Data Service (HDS), the Humanities Advanced Technology & Information Institute (HATII), the Humanities Research Institute (HRI), the Oxford Text Archive (OTA), the UCL Centre for Digital Humanities, and the VADS (Visual Arts Data Service). The purpose of this network is to enable all the members to pursue a series of collective aims and objectives <strong>in</strong> the support of arts and humanities research and scholarship, for much of which artshumanities.net will provide a central hub. These objectives <strong>in</strong>clude (1) promot<strong>in</strong>g the broad use of ICT; (2) provid<strong>in</strong>g leadership <strong>in</strong> the use of digital methods and resources; (3) develop<strong>in</strong>g and exchang<strong>in</strong>g expertise, standards, and best practices; (4) identify<strong>in</strong>g and serv<strong>in</strong>g the needs of the research community; and (5) conduct<strong>in</strong>g dialogue with stakeholders. NoC has a steer<strong>in</strong>g committee of six vot<strong>in</strong>g members drawn from the different centers; the committee’s role is to propose <strong>in</strong>itiatives and activities, to provide reports to the membership, to convene regular meet<strong>in</strong>gs of the full network, and to convene workgroups. Project Bamboo Accord<strong>in</strong>g to its website, Project Bamboo 762 “is a multi-<strong>in</strong>stitutional, <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, and <strong>in</strong>terorganizational effort that br<strong>in</strong>gs together researchers <strong>in</strong> arts and humanities, computer scientists, <strong>in</strong>formation scientists, librarians, and campus <strong>in</strong>formation technologists” to answer one major question: “How can we advance arts and humanities research through the development of shared technology services” Designed as a “community driven cyber<strong>in</strong>frastructure <strong>in</strong>itiative” (Ka<strong>in</strong>z 2009), Project Bamboo <strong>in</strong>itially received fund<strong>in</strong>g from the Mellon Foundation as a plann<strong>in</strong>g project and this phase concluded <strong>in</strong> September 2010. Project Bamboo is currently <strong>in</strong> its first 18-month phase of technology development that will conclude <strong>in</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g 2012. The “Bamboo Technology Project” (BTP) has ten partner <strong>in</strong>stitutions that have collectively committed $1.7 million dollars to this project along with $1.3 million provided by the Mellon Foundation. This first phase will <strong>in</strong>volve the development of three deliverables: a research environment for scholars <strong>in</strong> the humanities, a shared and foundational <strong>in</strong>frastructure that will allow both librarians and technologists to support humanities scholarship across <strong>in</strong>stitutional boundaries, and a technology bluepr<strong>in</strong>t for the next phase of the BTP that will focus on the “evolution of shared applications for the curation and exploration of widely distributed content collections.” BTP’s technology development is formally organized around four major areas of work, Research Applications (divided <strong>in</strong>to “Research Environments” and “Corpora Space Redesign Process”) and Shared Infrastructure (divided <strong>in</strong>to “Scholarly Web Services on Services Platform” and “Collections 761 http://www.arts-humanities.net/noc 762 http://www.projectbamboo.org/about/. The Bamboo Project also ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a blog (http://www.projectbamboo.org/blog/) and an active Technology Wiki (https://wiki.projectbamboo.org/display/BTECH/Technology+Wiki+-+Home) to track progress on various areas of work.
266 Interoperability”). 763 The major goal of the BTP is thus to establish a shared <strong>in</strong>frastructure for humanities research by develop<strong>in</strong>g web services, <strong>in</strong>teroperable collections, and partnerships that meet the needs of both researchers and <strong>in</strong>stitutions. The BTP builds off of the Bamboo Plann<strong>in</strong>g project that concluded <strong>in</strong> 2010, and as part of this project six workshops were held between the fall of 2008 and the summer of 2010, with over 600 <strong>in</strong>dividuals participat<strong>in</strong>g from a number of organizations and <strong>in</strong>stitutions. 764 Workshop One, entitled “The Plann<strong>in</strong>g Process & Understand<strong>in</strong>g Arts and Humanities Scholarship,” <strong>in</strong>volved four separate workshops at different locations where scholars <strong>in</strong> the arts and humanities held dialogues with <strong>in</strong>formation technologists to understand the scholarship practices of these discipl<strong>in</strong>es and their future directions. One major goal of these workshops was to develop a “high-level list of scholarly practices related to arts and humanities,” and this list, as well as all workshop notes, documents, and other materials, was placed onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the project plann<strong>in</strong>g wiki. 765 Workshop Two built off the results of the first series of workshops and exam<strong>in</strong>ed possible future directions for Project Bamboo, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g advocacy and leadership; education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g; <strong>in</strong>stitutional partnerships and support; scholarly network<strong>in</strong>g; standards and best practices; “tools & content partners”; and a shared service framework. At the end of this workshop, seven work<strong>in</strong>g groups 766 were formed around these themes, with the addition of an eighth work<strong>in</strong>g group entitled “Stories,” eventually renamed, “Scholarly Narratives,” which was chartered to “collect narratives and/or illustrative examples on behalf of all Bamboo work<strong>in</strong>g groups that express particular aspects of scholarship, scholarly workflow, research, and/or teach<strong>in</strong>g that are or could be facilitated by technology.” Each work<strong>in</strong>g group had a separate wiki page that allowed group members to collaborate, post documents, and provide other <strong>in</strong>formation. Work<strong>in</strong>g groups were also charged with creat<strong>in</strong>g demonstrators 767 “to support the discussion and analysis activities of the work<strong>in</strong>g groups, and to reflect and test the results of that discussion and analysis.” 768 Initial progress of the work<strong>in</strong>g groups was reported at Workshop Three, and a “straw consortial model” for the project was <strong>in</strong>troduced. The fourth workshop <strong>in</strong>volved the discussion of a draft program document; and the fifth workshop f<strong>in</strong>alized plans for the implementation proposal to the Mellon Foundation that was successfully funded. The amount of data generated from these workshops and found on the project plann<strong>in</strong>g wiki was quite extensive, and the Bamboo Project synthesized these data <strong>in</strong>to four reports that are available on the website 769 <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the plann<strong>in</strong>g project’s f<strong>in</strong>al report, a scholarly practices report that <strong>in</strong>cludes a “distillation of the themes of scholarly practice that emerged <strong>in</strong> Workshop 1,” a scholarly narratives report that describes scholars perception of their work and how it may change with the use of technology, and a f<strong>in</strong>al demonstrator report.
