been made freely available to them. S<strong>in</strong>ce the DDbDP is <strong>in</strong> Unicode and has already capitalized all
proper names, the semiautomated extraction of names from it was greatly simplified. The names
extracted from the DDbDP were added to the list of personal names already available from the
Prosopographia Ptolemaica, and the full corpus currently <strong>in</strong>cludes “25723 Greek nom<strong>in</strong>ative name
variants” that have been grouped <strong>in</strong>to 16571 names. L<strong>in</strong>ks from this merged corpus to the DDbDP will
be made us<strong>in</strong>g a database of 207,070 “decl<strong>in</strong>ed forms of these name variants.” Ultimately, all of the
recognized name forms will be stored <strong>in</strong> a relational database of name references that will then be able
to serve as a prosopography. All name references will be l<strong>in</strong>ked to the appropriate texts <strong>in</strong> the
Trismegistos texts database.
The Prosopographia Ptolemaica (PP) 549 is a longstand<strong>in</strong>g research project from the Department of
Ancient History at the University of Leuven. Started as a “list of all <strong>in</strong>habitants of Egypt between 300
and 30 B.C., from Greek, Egyptian and Lat<strong>in</strong> sources” the project has recently been extended to
<strong>in</strong>clude the Roman and Byzant<strong>in</strong>e periods. This resource has been <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>in</strong>to the larger
Trismegistos portal and <strong>in</strong>cludes close l<strong>in</strong>ks to the HGV and the DDbDP but also ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s a separate
database <strong>in</strong>terface. This database can be searched by Lat<strong>in</strong> name transcription, ethnic group, residence,
PP number, or date, and each <strong>in</strong>dividual person record can <strong>in</strong>clude a PP number (if available), a Lat<strong>in</strong>
transcription of the name, sex, place of residence, ethnic group, assumed dates, and a reference to the
text <strong>in</strong> which they were mentioned (e.g., papyri, <strong>in</strong>scriptions), along with a l<strong>in</strong>k to bibliographic
<strong>in</strong>formation on this text <strong>in</strong> the Trismegistos database.
Another website that provides access to prosopographical data from Egypt is “DIME Onl<strong>in</strong>e:
Prosopgraphie zu Soknopaiu Nesos.” 550 DIME conta<strong>in</strong>s references to written records (Demotic and
Greek) of people who lived <strong>in</strong> the Soknopaiu Nesos area of Al Fayyūm from the seventh century BC to
the fifth century AD. The entire database can be searched, and each identified <strong>in</strong>dividual has a
descriptive record that <strong>in</strong>cludes basic personal and k<strong>in</strong>ship <strong>in</strong>formation, possessions, and any relevant
bibliography. While search<strong>in</strong>g of the database does not require registration, users who do register can
add <strong>in</strong>formation to the database.
A related onomastic, if not entirely prosopographical, project for Ancient Greece is the Lexicon of
Greek Personal Names (LGPN). 551 This project was established <strong>in</strong> 1972 as a research project of the
British Academy under the direction of Peter Marshall Fraser, and <strong>in</strong> 1996 it became a part of Oxford
University and is a member of the group of Oxford Classics Research Projects. The purpose of the
LGPN is to:
… collect and publish with documentation all known ancient Greek personal names (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g
non-Greek names recorded <strong>in</strong> Greek, and Greek names <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong>), drawn from all available
sources (literature, <strong>in</strong>scriptions, graffiti, papyri, co<strong>in</strong>s, vases and other artefacts), with<strong>in</strong> the
period from the earliest Greek written records down to, approximately, the sixth century
A.D. 552
This lexicon does not <strong>in</strong>clude mythological names, Mycenaean names, or later Byzant<strong>in</strong>e names. Five
volumes have been published, and several more are forthcom<strong>in</strong>g. Individual volumes <strong>in</strong>clude all the
Greek names from a particular geographic area (e.g., LGPN I: Aegean Islands, Cyprus, Cyrenaica).
