One of the oldest and largest electronic collections of papyri onl<strong>in</strong>e, with federated access also
provided by the APIS, is the Duke Data Bank of Documentary Papyri (DDbDP). 465 This project was
founded <strong>in</strong> 1983 as a collaborative effort between Duke University and the Packard Humanities
Institute and was first made available as a CD-ROM (Sos<strong>in</strong> 2010). The DDbDP <strong>in</strong>cludes the full text of
thousands of Greek and Lat<strong>in</strong> nonliterary papyri and serves as the textual counterpart to the HGV (a
collection of papyrological metadata) and the APIS, which as described above conta<strong>in</strong>s both metadata
and images. Initial onl<strong>in</strong>e access to this collection was provided through the Perseus Digital Library, 466
and Perseus cont<strong>in</strong>ues to provide a browsable list of texts where the full text of the papyri is available
for view<strong>in</strong>g onl<strong>in</strong>e. 467 While these texts are searchable through the various advanced search<strong>in</strong>g
features of Perseus, a newer papyrological search eng<strong>in</strong>e also provides access to this collection and is
available at papyri.<strong>in</strong>fo, 468 a site that is part of the larger IDP project. The DDbDP is also a project
partner <strong>in</strong> both the IDP and the Concordia projects.
Like APIS, the Papyrus Portal Project 469 seeks to provide its users with a federated search of all
“digitized and electronically catalogued papyrus collections <strong>in</strong> Germany” and to provide an “unified
presentation of the search results with the most important <strong>in</strong>formation on the particular papyrus.” The
Papyrus Portal provides <strong>in</strong>tegrated access to the digitized hold<strong>in</strong>gs of 10 German papyri collections,
the largest of which is the Papyrus Project Halle-Jena-Leipzig. 470 Fund<strong>in</strong>g for this project was
provided by the Deutsche Forschungsgeme<strong>in</strong>schaft (DFG), and the website was created by the
University of Leipzig us<strong>in</strong>g the open-source software “MyCoRe.” 471 The Papyrus Portal database has
both an English and a German <strong>in</strong>terface and can be searched by <strong>in</strong>ventory number, title, language
(Arabic, Aramaic, Demotic, Gothic, Greek, Hebrew, Hieratic, Hieroglyphic, Coptic, Lat<strong>in</strong>, Syriac),
text type (documentary, literary, unidentifiable, paraliterary), material, location, date, content, and free
text. Individual records for each papyrus also <strong>in</strong>clude l<strong>in</strong>ks to their orig<strong>in</strong>al database so the user can go
directly to detailed data without hav<strong>in</strong>g search <strong>in</strong>dividual databases aga<strong>in</strong>.
The most significant collection <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the Papyrus Portal Project is Papyrus-und Ostrakaprojekt
Halle-Jena-Leipzig, a collaborative effort of three universities to digitize and provide access to their
papyri collections (both published and unpublished). This grow<strong>in</strong>g and well-documented database
provides various means of access to the papyri collection <strong>in</strong> both English and German. While the
“general” search <strong>in</strong>cludes keyword search<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> title, <strong>in</strong>ventory or publication number, text type,
collection, place, and district with various date limit options, the full-text search <strong>in</strong>cludes both a Greek
and an Arabic keyboard for easier text retrieval. The “complex” search <strong>in</strong>volves sophisticated
search<strong>in</strong>g of detailed metadata fields for written objects, texts, or documents. Two ways of brows<strong>in</strong>g
the collection of papyri and ostraca are available: the user can browse an <strong>in</strong>dex of written objects,
fragments, or documents alphabetically by papyrus title or use a faceted brows<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>terface, aga<strong>in</strong> for
written objects, texts, or documents. Once a user chooses a type of object such as texts, he or she can
then choose from a series of metadata categories to create a very specific list of documents (e.g.,
Written objects – Material – Wood). The record for each object 472 <strong>in</strong>cludes thumbnail images (larger
images can be viewed us<strong>in</strong>g a special viewer that loads <strong>in</strong> a separate browser w<strong>in</strong>dow), title, collection,
publication number, writ<strong>in</strong>g material, size, format, type of text, script, language, date, place, and a l<strong>in</strong>k
