Design Approach/Philosophy
Agrarian, rural, and natural landscape should dictate the design solutions. Design elements should be
subservient to the landscape. Proposed improvements should reflect stewardship of the land protecting
and enhancing the environment.
Land Use
The varied landscape of Powers Farm allows for the land use of the site to be many things to
many people; all while staying within the context of a historically agriculturally based open space.
Site Specifics
The Powers Farm site has a large surficial area that get
inundated by storm waters. These seasonally wet areas
make farming the land difficult. The idea of raised beds
gardens allows this community park to relive its past li
as a fully functioning farm on a micro scale. Elevating
garden beds can facilitate a productive community farm
kzla
that serves as not only a place for viable local product
but as a communal anchor firmly placed in Randolphs

MA
Community Supported Agriculture
consists of a community of individuals who pledge support to
a farm operation so that the farmland becomes, either legally
or spiritually, the community’s farm, with the growers and
consumers providing mutual support and sharing the risks
and benefits of food production.
**Always leave a 12 ‘ swath of un-mown meadow as a working habitat for existing flora and fauna. Cutting
a whole meadow in one day can take away all the food needed by micro and Macro fauna. The best way to do
Powers Farm EXISTING CONDITIONS: INVASIVE SPECIES
Bobolinks and eastern meadowlarks build nests, raise young, and forage in hay fields, meadows, and pastures
during the summer. Many birds of prey, such as American kestrels, northern harriers, and short-eared owls, rely on
grasslands for hunting small mammals during summer or winter. Waterfowl and shorebirds sometimes feed in flooded
portions of fields during migration. Grasslands also provide habitat to a variety of other wildlife, including mammals and
many butterflies. Small mammals that inhabit fields, such as meadow voles and meadow jumping mice, are an important
food source for many birds of prey. Larger mammals, such as white-tailed deer and red foxes, regularly visit grasslands for
feeding. Butterflies, such as tiger swallowtails, monarchs, and fritillaries, can be found in fields feeding on wildflower nectar.
RECOMMENDED
Manual
Smaller problem areas can be hand
pulled, dug, and cut
NOTE:
The entire plant shall be removed
including the entirety of the root system.
Celastrus often grows in the same
environment with poison ivy.
Smaller areas can be hand cut, dug, and
harvested to reduce biomass
NOTE:
These areas can be covered by plastic to
smother roots for a minimum of three
seasons. This techniques works best
when plants are cut to at least 4”.
Cutting, Digging, Pulling
NOTE:
Smaller stands can be removed manually
in this method when in areas that herbicides
are not permitted. This method is
labor intensive. Pulling is best when soil
compaction is relatively light and ground
is soft.
Grubbing or pulling
NOTE:
Repetition of at least 4 times a year is
required for this method. If entire root
structure is not removed plants will re
sprout.
Hand pull small plants. Dig larger plants.
NOTE:
Repetition of at least 2 times a year is
required for this method. This method
promote vigorous re sprouting if not
combined with herbicide.
Mechanical
Chemical
Cutting vines at comfortable height will
kill canopy infestations.
NOTE:
The entire plant shall be removed including
the entirety of the root system to
prohibit re-sprouting
Herbicide methods
-Foliar Treatment- glyphosate or tricflopyr
-Cut Stem Treatments- glyphosate or tricflopyr
ester
-Basal Bark Method - tricflopyr ester
NOTE:
Application should be reserved for Fall
and Winter to reduce impact on native
species
Mowing in areas with limited topography
works well to reduce biomass. Mow
multiple times annually.
NOTE:
A systematic combination of herbicides
and mowing tend to have the greatest
affects
Herbicide methods
-Foliar Treatment
-Cut Stem Treatments
-Bundle Cut Method
June-September
NOTE:
Application should be reserved for late
summer.
Mowing is an ineffective method for the
removal of these plants
Herbicide methods
-Foliar Treatment (spring)
-Cut Stem Treatments _ aaquatic approved
glyphosate
-Basal Bark Method
NOTE:
Timing is important and is recommended
before flowering
Mowing, Cutting, Digging, Covering
NOTE:
Smaller stands (30 stems and below)
can be removed by mowing if repeated
monthly for three field seasons. Removal
procedures should be carried out
twice a month.
Chemical application works best as a
multi prong method with mowing.
NOTE:
Common Reed is best treated when 5’
tall and retreated @ 3’ tall.
Foliar
spray with aminopyralid, imazapyr, glyphosate,
or triclopyr. Cut-stump treat with
glyphosate or triclopyr.
A repetitive cutting method is suggested.
Dig or pull using a tractor, ATV,
or truck
NOTE:
Mowing of large swaths can result in
flat tires. Filling tire with foam. Mow affected
areas 3-6 times during the growing
season for 2-4 years.
Herbicide methods
-Foliar Treatment (spring) metsulfuronmethyl,
glyphosate, or triclopyr.
-Cut Stem Treatments- glyphosate or tricflopyr
-Basal Bark Method- tricflopyr ester
NOTE:
Application should be reserved for Fall
and Winter to reduce impact on native
species
Cutting method must be repeated 2
times a year.
NOTE:
This method alone is ineffective and
must be combine with root removal to
reduce sprouting. Removal in winter is
strongly discouraged.
Herbicide methods
-Foliar Treatment
-Cut Stem Treatments
-Basal Bark Method (late Fall through
Winter)
NOTE:
Application should be reserved for Fall
and Winter to reduce impact on native
species
Biological
There are no known biological controls
There are no known biological controls
Biological control has been the most effective
when trying to eradicate
NOTE:
Hylobius transversovittatus (A weevil),
Galerucella calmariensis and G. pusilla
two leaf eating beetles are being used to
control stands of loosestrife.
Grazing when plants are newly sprouting
can help reduce biomass.
NOTE:
Goats although effective will eat wanted
vegetation as well.
Grazing when plants are newly sprouting
can help reduce biomass.
Research at West Virginia University suggests that the
grazing of goats for two seasons at a rate of eight to ten
goats per acre will be necessary to provide effective control.
Ken Simeral, an Ohio extension agent, recommends
raising angora goats to fight infestations of multiflora
rose in pastures. An added benefit is the profits from 10 to
30 lbs. of mohair produced per goat per year.
Grazing when plants are newly sprouting
can help reduce biomass
Fire
Burning of C. orbiculatus is not a viable
option
Burning methods have been shown to be
effective in combination with chemical
control
NOTE:
Due to site proximity to neighborhoods
Fire control is not recommended
Burning of L. salicria is not a viable option
Burning of P. cuspidatum is not a viable
option
Burning of R. multiflora is not a viable
