It was great <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> be <strong>on</strong>e of the lucky people <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> get tickets<br />
for the <strong>Morgan</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Waikerie leg, of the mighty paddle<br />
steamer MARION’S journey up river <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> Berri.<br />
The weather was beautiful, the food and drink went<br />
down well, great scenic views, plus meeting some very<br />
diverse and interesting people.<br />
One pers<strong>on</strong> was RON TOOLE, who will be 83 in<br />
December, {he was born in Waikerie} was deck hand,<br />
then fireman <strong>on</strong> the MARION between 1942---1943<br />
R<strong>on</strong> became fireman at age 14, when the current<br />
fireman ran off with <strong>on</strong>e of the passengers. R<strong>on</strong> got<br />
the fireman's job overnight. His great-grandfather<br />
was HUGH KING, who ran the Gem line of steamers,<br />
which included the ELLEN and RUBY, the Gem was<br />
his main steamer. He ran from MORGAN <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> MILDURA<br />
each week. R<strong>on</strong> went <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> lay the WOOMERA pipe<br />
line, did truck driving, then went in<str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> the army for 20<br />
years, served in MALAYA and KOREA. He was<br />
wounded in KOREA. When his father died, R<strong>on</strong> flew <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
ADELAIDE for his funeral, then got posted <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> PORT<br />
AUGUSTA then Keswick Barracks. He retired <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
CADELL where he now lives a quiet life. I and a few<br />
others were lucky enough <str<strong>on</strong>g>to</str<strong>on</strong>g> meet him <strong>on</strong> our<br />
w<strong>on</strong>derful cruise.<br />
