MORGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL BOOK WEEK This year the kids once again dressed up as a “book character” for Book Week. A special assembly was held on Friday morning with a parade of costumes and then each student received their own book <strong>to</strong> keep which was donated by Governing Council. Some of our costumes included The Mad Hatter, Pirates, Jesse from Toy S<strong>to</strong>ry, Geronimo Stil<strong>to</strong>n, The Swagman, Specky Magee and the Wicked Witch <strong>to</strong> name a few. The 2/3/4 class dressed up JUMP ROPE Our annual Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off <strong>to</strong>ok place on Friday Sept 3 rd . Students have been practicing hard on their routines for a few weeks and they certainly put on a great display for parents and visi<strong>to</strong>rs. After the class routines, a delicious healthy lunch of Chicken Kebabs, Veggie Bake, Pota<strong>to</strong> Bake and Pizza was prepared by the Upper Primary Class. To finish off the lunch, a delicious fruit salad with icecream was enjoyed by all. DALE ELLIOTT VISIT Young ex Ramco man Dale Elliott (who is a motivational speaker, world record holder, comedian and paraplegic) recently visited Morgan Primary on a promotional <strong>to</strong>ur. He has just returned from a hand cycling marathon with a fellow paraplegic mate from Melbourne <strong>to</strong> Darwin <strong>to</strong> raise money <strong>to</strong> treat children with club feet in Africa. He also showed video footage <strong>to</strong> the students of his recent world record skydive in New Zealand. From his inspirational speech, the students have learnt that it’s not about what you “can’t do”, it’s about saying “I must” and just have a go! SCIENCE OPEN NIGHT The school recently invited families in for an open night as part of Science Week. Students had prepared and set up many experiments and games for parents <strong>to</strong> participate in. QUIZ NIGHT Our bi-annual quiz night was held also on Friday 3 rd Sept with a little more than interesting weather! As we prepared <strong>to</strong> move everything over <strong>to</strong> the complex, a furious s<strong>to</strong>rm hit, washing everything out and cutting power. As they say – the show must go on. Thanks <strong>to</strong> Gordon Johns<strong>to</strong>n and Will Lindner for supplying genera<strong>to</strong>rs and lighting <strong>to</strong> the complex, the mood was rather quirky then, 10 mins before start time, power was res<strong>to</strong>red!! A little late starting, the night proved <strong>to</strong> be a great one again. This year we ended up with 15 tables of eager competi<strong>to</strong>rs ranging from 8yrs <strong>to</strong> 79yrs of age! We had two bottle coin <strong>to</strong>sses and two lolly jar <strong>to</strong>sses for the kids. An auction of two holiday packages, a Crows footy, Port Power footy day pass and Monar<strong>to</strong> Zoo pass along with our giant raffle, pushed our <strong>to</strong>tal along <strong>to</strong> approx $2,300. This money will go <strong>to</strong>wards the school camps this year – Rec/Yr1/Yr2’s are off <strong>to</strong> the Adelaide Hills and the Year 3 – 7’s are heading <strong>to</strong> Canberra. The winning team was “Food for Thought” consisting of Will & Alistaire Lindner, Roma Hausler, Gordon, Karen & Bradley Johns<strong>to</strong>n & our ex CPS By Karen Johns<strong>to</strong>n worker George Kra<strong>to</strong>polous and wife Rachel. Thank you <strong>to</strong> everyone involved in making this night a 28 success, <strong>to</strong> the many people who donated wonderful prizes & Leigh Hausler our Quiz Master. THE “GREAT ESCAPE” VISIT On Thursday 16 th Sept the Cystic Fibrosis “Great Escape” Bash cars came <strong>to</strong> visit students at Morgan Primary. There were four different bash cars on school grounds and students were able <strong>to</strong> sit in them, on them, set off the sirens and music and see what they were all about. A short speech was given on what Cystic Fibrosis is about and an inspirational book mark was handed out. The night before, a large contingent of students and parents greeted the bash cars at the ferry with a “Welcome <strong>to</strong> Morgan” banner made by the 2/3/4 class. The kids enjoyed receiving free goodies as they crossed the river and eventually Morgan’s Wizard of Oz truck arrived with Lucy, Kenny and Clare Fry on board.
STRUGGLE TO SAVE HERITAGE DRY DOCK IN MANNUM Rising water levels in the Murray are good news for the river’s health, but for Flinders University archaeologists working <strong>to</strong> conserve a unique 19 th century dry dock at Mannum, they create an added sense of urgency. Excavations in December last year yielded some of the structural secrets of the disused dry dock, which was used <strong>to</strong> repair and refit the paddle steamers that plied the Murray’s busy trade up until the 1920s. Staff and volunteers from the Mannum Dock Museum and a team of postgraduate and undergraduate students from Flinders will again work on the site with an architect and conservationist in September Their aim is <strong>to</strong> complete a full picture of the dock’s structure and the environment in which it sits. Originally built as a floating structure for use on Lake Alexandrina, the Randell Dry Dock was <strong>to</strong>wed <strong>to</strong> Mannum and installed onshore in 1876 by Captain William Richard Randell founding father of Mannum. The installation of the Dock at Mannum greatly extended a small existing ship building and repair facility that had been developed by Captain Randell. It is estimated that over half of all vessels in use on the river system used the Dock at some time and its associated workshops consequently had a significant role in employing local shipwrights and tradesmen and provided the core required <strong>to</strong> maintain the local ship building industry. It is thought that only one other comparable structure existed in Albany, Western Australia, from the same time period. Along with examples from Bermuda and Chile, the Mannum Dock is the only one that has survived. Assessing possible threats <strong>to</strong> the dock’s integrity from rising water levels will be part of the project. Archaeologist Britt Bur<strong>to</strong>n said that there was an urgent need <strong>to</strong> support and stabilise the dock’s timbers. “At the current rate of deterioration, there is a window of less than ten years in which <strong>to</strong> take major preservative action,” she said. “Beyond this time the dock will probably be <strong>to</strong>o rotten <strong>to</strong> save. The Save Our Dry Dock group has researched options <strong>to</strong> help slow down or halt the increasing rate of deterioration.” In the short term, construction of a roof over the dock is being considered. “These investigations by the Flinders University team are essential <strong>to</strong> assist in determining the right course of action <strong>to</strong> save our Dry Dock”, said Mannum Dock Museum Chairman, Rob Bowring. Rob further said, “The Randell Dry Dock is an integral piece of Mannum’s maritime his<strong>to</strong>ry and is one of iconic attractions for our <strong>to</strong>wnship and the Mannum Dock Museum. Our ‘Save our Dry Dock’ committee is working tirelessly <strong>to</strong> implement a conservation plan <strong>to</strong> ensure Mannum does not lose this vital link <strong>to</strong> the days of steam and wooden paddle wheelers and boats on the Murray”. The upcoming project will combine surveys and the digging of a two-metre pit in order <strong>to</strong> expose and document the structures of the dock. The group’s main aim is <strong>to</strong> produce a complete, detailed technical drawing of the dock, and activities will also include filming a short documentary <strong>to</strong> record the archaeological activities and overall project. Members of the public are encouraged <strong>to</strong> come and see the excavation in action. The Randell Dry Dock is located at the river end of Mannum’s main street, next <strong>to</strong> the ferry crossing at the Mannum Dock Museum.
