In 1906 an enthusiastic group of Burra mo<strong>to</strong>rists formed the ‘Burra Mo<strong>to</strong>r Club’ and planned their 13
inaugural run over a rough bush track <strong>to</strong> the busy river port <strong>to</strong>wn of Morgan, some 82 kilometres away.
Drivers rested their weary bodies at The Gums Station and <strong>to</strong>iled on <strong>to</strong> Morgan the next day, arriving <strong>to</strong>
a grand welcome and official pho<strong>to</strong>graphs in front of the Commercial and Terminus Hotels.
On Sunday Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10, 2010, The Burra Mo<strong>to</strong>r Club will re-stage the memorable run <strong>to</strong> Morgan with
some 30 cars and mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles already entered.
Enthusiasts from Adelaide and the Riverland will gather in Burra on Saturday for a lunchtime
‘shake-down’ run <strong>to</strong> Farrell Flat and an evening dinner before their 9am departure Sunday morning for
Morgan...Again via The Gums where entrants will enjoy a refreshing morning tea.
Invitations have been sent <strong>to</strong> vehicle clubs throughout the mid-north, Barossa and Riverland <strong>to</strong>wns <strong>to</strong>
join the festivities and already twenty <strong>to</strong> thirty vehicles have confirmed their participation from the
Riverland Car Club.
Participating in the run, from Nor’ West Bend is Sue and Kevin Pedder in their 1929 Reo Flying Cloud.
“The Master” Boasting hydraulic brakes, electric start and a cruising speed of 90 kph, this American
beauty is one of only 86 known <strong>to</strong> exist world-wide.
Also taking part will be father and son team, Noel and Scott Howarth from Morgan. They will have two
very noteworthy entries. A 1919 Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle and an iconic Bugatti.
The Bugatti marque made a name for itself in the early 1900’s as a swift, lightweight racer and by the
1920’s had made the transition <strong>to</strong> sophisticated road car and while they were expensive, quite a few
were imported <strong>to</strong> Australia.
Similarly the American made Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle also has a long his<strong>to</strong>ry as a racing machine and as early
as 1906 held every speed record in the US. The Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle company of Springfield
Massachusetts employed over 3000 people on its assembly line which stretched a massive seven miles
throughout the fac<strong>to</strong>ry.
Rod James, Chairman of the Morgan Community Development and Tourism Association says, “ We
encourage anyone with a Veteran, Vintage or Classic collec<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>to</strong> join us at Morgan on Sunday
Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10th.”
“We are asking everyone <strong>to</strong> have vehicles assembled on the Lions Riverfront Reserve prior <strong>to</strong> 11.30am.”
he said.
The Morgan Lions Club will be catering for lunch and after ample time <strong>to</strong> inspect the assembled
collection of brass, nickel and chrome drivers will make their own way back home.
“The original return journey <strong>to</strong>ok four days and was made even more memorable having <strong>to</strong> battle a
severe dust s<strong>to</strong>rm. This year we’re expecting wild flowers all the way”, Chairman, Rod James said.
