Dave Burgess
Mayor
I am married with two sons and have been a permanent
resident of the Mid Murray District for 25 years.
I have owned my own business over the past 30 years
I have enjoyed being a councillor for Mid Murray over
the past 7½ years, the last 4 as Deputy Mayor.
I believe we need <strong>to</strong> guide our growth within our region
<strong>to</strong> develop a base for future business and managed
<strong>to</strong>urism. We need <strong>to</strong> find a balance by providing the
needs of the community whilst still protecting our
environment.
Your vote for me will ensure
strong leadership necessary
for the Mid Murray Council <strong>to</strong>
achieve these goals.
RIVER NORTH WARD
As a resident of Cadell I have represented River North
Ward as a Councilor for the past four years. During this
period I have served on the Strategic Planning committee
and Reserves Management Working group and have seen a
positive change.
If re-elected I will continue <strong>to</strong> support the ongoing projects
in River North that benefit our youth and senior citizens. I
am committed <strong>to</strong> provide facilities <strong>to</strong> our region that are
normal in larger <strong>to</strong>wns and this in turn will help local
business prosper. The river and <strong>to</strong>urism are very
important <strong>to</strong> our region and so are the many community
groups that keep our <strong>to</strong>wns alive. We have seen positive
changes in recent times, some of which are upgrades <strong>to</strong>
the Morgan Internet centre and the Cadell Institute,
Re-roofing of Landseer building and funding for a new
Playground and BMX track. We have also seen the
introduction of the Morgan/Cadell community car, a
medical transport service that is run by volunteers and
council. The re-development of the Morgan riverfront is a
very exciting project and is one that I am proud <strong>to</strong> be part
of and will continue <strong>to</strong> support this if re-elected.
Make your vote count and we
will keep moving forward
The installation of new digital transmitters <strong>to</strong> service the <strong>to</strong>wnship of Morgan was approved at
the Mid Murray Council meeting <strong>to</strong>day. Morgan will welcome its new digital TV service in the
coming months.
WIN Television will establish a digital transla<strong>to</strong>r site within the <strong>to</strong>wnship of Morgan <strong>to</strong> provide
residents with reliable digital television reception. The Morgan site will receive television
services from the Ramco Heights transmitters, near Waikerie, and retransmit them in<strong>to</strong>
Morgan.
WIN regional SA and Ch9 Adelaide General Manager, Graeme Gilbertson thanked the Mid
Murray Council for its support for the approval for the transmitter installation as this project
has come <strong>to</strong> fruition due <strong>to</strong> the excellent goodwill and cooperation between the Mid Murray
Council and WIN Television.
"With analogue <strong>switch</strong>-off imminent, this transmitter will significantly improve television
services <strong>to</strong> the region,” Mr Gilbertson said.
WIN has invested in the new transmitters, which will deliver the WIN 7, 9 and 10 services, as well
as ABC and SBS digital transmissions.
"Morgan residents will now have a local digital TV signal rather than trying <strong>to</strong> receive the
television signals from the more distant Ramco Heights transmitter,” Mr Gilbertson said.
The new Morgan transmitters are an integral part of rolling out the digital television service <strong>to</strong>
regional South Australia, part of the Australia-wide analogue <strong>switch</strong>-off. Digital <strong>switch</strong>over
will deliver better picture and sound quality and free up spectrum which can be used for the
delivery of new and improved broadcasting and communications services, such as high
speed broadband. Analogue services <strong>to</strong> regional South Australia will be <strong>switch</strong>ed off on
December 15, 2010.
It is expected the new Morgan transmitters will be installed and operational between late
Oc<strong>to</strong>ber and early November 2010. Once the transmitters are operational viewers in Morgan
with a digital set <strong>to</strong>p box, or an in-built digital tuner, may need <strong>to</strong> re-scan their set <strong>to</strong>p boxes
or run an au<strong>to</strong>matic channel scan <strong>to</strong> view the WIN Television digital service.
What is digital free-<strong>to</strong>-air television
The word ‘digital’ refers <strong>to</strong> the way in which signals
are sent <strong>to</strong> and received by your television. Free-<strong>to</strong>air
TV in Australia is currently broadcast in both digital
and analog. However, the analog signals will be
phased out between 2010 and 2013 and Australian TV
will become digital-only. Analog signals will be
<strong>switch</strong>ed off around regional South Australia, including
this area, on 15 December 2010.
Why are we <strong>switch</strong>ing <strong>to</strong> digital TV
Most people will enjoy a much better picture and
improved sound. It also enables more channels <strong>to</strong> be
provided. By <strong>switch</strong>ing <strong>to</strong> digital, Australia will be
keeping pace with the rest of the world, and will
continue <strong>to</strong> have access <strong>to</strong> the latest programs and
technology. Switching off analog TV signals will also
free up broadcast space that could be used for other
services for the community.
What do I need <strong>to</strong> do <strong>to</strong> get ready for the <strong>switch</strong>over
After the <strong>switch</strong>over, free-<strong>to</strong>-air television will only be
available in digital so you’ll need <strong>to</strong> have a television
that can receive digital TV signals. You can convert
your existing analog TV by connecting a digital set <strong>to</strong>p
box, or upgrade <strong>to</strong> a digital television. One set <strong>to</strong>p box
will be needed for each TV you wish <strong>to</strong> convert.
How do I know if I’m already ‘digital ready’
An easy way <strong>to</strong> tell is checking whether you can
receive ABC2 or SBS TWO. These are standard
definition digital channels and if you can see them,
and you don’t have subscription TV, then it means you
are able <strong>to</strong> receive digital free-<strong>to</strong>-air TV.
If your TV isn’t capable of receiving digital broadcasts
(i.e. you can’t view either of these channels), then its
likely you’re still viewing analog TV signals which will
be <strong>switch</strong>ed off on 15 December 2010.
When can I <strong>switch</strong> <strong>to</strong> digital TV
Digital TV services are already on the air in this area
so you can make the <strong>switch</strong> now. You will need <strong>to</strong> be
digital ready by 15 December <strong>to</strong> keep watching free-<strong>to</strong>
-air channels after 15 December 2010 when the
analog TV signals are <strong>switch</strong>ed off.
For more information on getting ready for digital TV,
visit www.digitalready.gov.au, or call 1800 20 10 13.

MORGAN COMMUNITY CAR UPDATE
6
The community car has now been operating for almost two years thanks <strong>to</strong> the generosity of our volunteer
drivers.
Unfortunately over that time we have lost a number of drivers for various reasons, resulting in having <strong>to</strong> ask for
everyone’s assistance <strong>to</strong> ensure the service remains viable.
Despite advertising in the Morgan Matters we have been unable <strong>to</strong> recruit new drivers <strong>to</strong> fill the gaps.
Action <strong>to</strong> assist the service and the volunteers are listed below.
ALL bookings must be made through the coordina<strong>to</strong>r, only by the client.
Use the community car as a last resort, not the first easy option.
Use Family members as a first preference when a medical appointment is required.
Do not embarrass drivers by asking <strong>to</strong> do any shopping other than prescriptions.
The car is <strong>to</strong> be re-fuelled only once by the driver after the trip at Morgan.
Don’t use the Community Car when you are able <strong>to</strong> use your own.
Please remember that this service was started <strong>to</strong> assist those people who have no other way <strong>to</strong> attend medical
appointments, and not <strong>to</strong> be used when alternative transport is available.
Remember also that the service is operated with volunteer drivers who very generously give of their time,
even on weekends.
WITHOUT OUR VOLUNTEER DRIVERS THERE IS NO COMMUNITY CAR.
PLEASE CONSIDER THE ABOVE SUGGESTIONS TO ENSURE THE CONTINUATION OF THE SERVICE.
Wack and Nola Ward
Morgan says a sad farewell <strong>to</strong> Nola and Wack, Morgan’s loss is Goolwa’s gain. They
bought a shack at Pelican Point in the late 70’s where they have spent many happy
years with family and made many friends. They have both been very community minded.
Nola was a member of the Morgan Bowling club and Red-Hatters. Both were members
of the Commercial Hotel Social Club committee and were part of the group who started
the annual Black Tie Dinner, which is still a great success <strong>to</strong>day. Wack, as everyone
knows is the resident “ roving reporter” for the Morgan Matters as well as proof reader.
(This earned him the title of “Scoop Ward”.)
What a great job he has done over the years, both with his interesting s<strong>to</strong>ries and
fabulous pictures. He is one of the cura<strong>to</strong>rs of the Morgan Museum, which has seen
many great changes for the better over the past few years. He is a member of “Boys
Shed Night”, which is a group of dedicated workers who renovate dilapidated pieces of
his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong> be put on display at the museum. He has been part of the Special Events
Committee who have raised an incredible sum of money already for the upgrade of
Morgan’s river front. Back in the early 80’s he started the annual Horseshoe Throwing
event at Pelican Point, raising money for St. Johns, Senior Cits, Lions etc. There is a
perpetual trophy for the best shoes thrown for the day and is now called “The Aunty Bet Hausler Memorial Day”.
Many thousands of dollars have been raised by this event. Both he and Nola have made many long-standing
friends around the Morgan area who are really going <strong>to</strong> miss them. They have been the very best of neighbours <strong>to</strong>
the Irvine family. There have been quite a few teary eyes over the last few weeks when people realized they were
really leaving – there would be no more Wack <strong>to</strong> call on <strong>to</strong> ‘just take a pho<strong>to</strong>’ or talk on the ABC radio about his
beloved Morgan and it’s river. Even Baldy and Leanne are upset – Rum sales of Mt. Gay are set <strong>to</strong> drop rapidly
without Nola <strong>to</strong> pop in for a bottle or two!
There are many more parts <strong>to</strong> these two special people that could be written, you all have your own s<strong>to</strong>ries you
could tell, but what we do want <strong>to</strong> say is enjoy Goolwa, we know you will make many new friends – think of us now
and again.
GOODBYE SPECIAL PEOPLE FROM YOUR FRIENDS IN MORGAN.
We sadly farewelled two special people this month - Nola and Wack – who are doing a ‘sea change’ <strong>to</strong> Goolwa.
It is not just the RSL who will miss them but also the many local clubs, pubs and committees they were involved
in. We wish them all the best in their new adventure.
His<strong>to</strong>ric Vehicles mo<strong>to</strong>ring <strong>to</strong> Morgan
In 1906 an enthusiastic group of Burra mo<strong>to</strong>rists formed the ‘Burra Mo<strong>to</strong>r Club’ and planned their 13
inaugural run over a rough bush track <strong>to</strong> the busy river port <strong>to</strong>wn of Morgan, some 82 kilometres away.
Drivers rested their weary bodies at The Gums Station and <strong>to</strong>iled on <strong>to</strong> Morgan the next day, arriving <strong>to</strong>
a grand welcome and official pho<strong>to</strong>graphs in front of the Commercial and Terminus Hotels.
On Sunday Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10, 2010, The Burra Mo<strong>to</strong>r Club will re-stage the memorable run <strong>to</strong> Morgan with
some 30 cars and mo<strong>to</strong>rcycles already entered.
Enthusiasts from Adelaide and the Riverland will gather in Burra on Saturday for a lunchtime
‘shake-down’ run <strong>to</strong> Farrell Flat and an evening dinner before their 9am departure Sunday morning for
Morgan...Again via The Gums where entrants will enjoy a refreshing morning tea.
Invitations have been sent <strong>to</strong> vehicle clubs throughout the mid-north, Barossa and Riverland <strong>to</strong>wns <strong>to</strong>
join the festivities and already twenty <strong>to</strong> thirty vehicles have confirmed their participation from the
Riverland Car Club.
Participating in the run, from Nor’ West Bend is Sue and Kevin Pedder in their 1929 Reo Flying Cloud.
“The Master” Boasting hydraulic brakes, electric start and a cruising speed of 90 kph, this American
beauty is one of only 86 known <strong>to</strong> exist world-wide.
Also taking part will be father and son team, Noel and Scott Howarth from Morgan. They will have two
very noteworthy entries. A 1919 Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle and an iconic Bugatti.
The Bugatti marque made a name for itself in the early 1900’s as a swift, lightweight racer and by the
1920’s had made the transition <strong>to</strong> sophisticated road car and while they were expensive, quite a few
were imported <strong>to</strong> Australia.
Similarly the American made Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle also has a long his<strong>to</strong>ry as a racing machine and as early
as 1906 held every speed record in the US. The Indian mo<strong>to</strong>rcycle company of Springfield
Massachusetts employed over 3000 people on its assembly line which stretched a massive seven miles
throughout the fac<strong>to</strong>ry.
Rod James, Chairman of the Morgan Community Development and Tourism Association says, “ We
encourage anyone with a Veteran, Vintage or Classic collec<strong>to</strong>r vehicle <strong>to</strong> join us at Morgan on Sunday
Oc<strong>to</strong>ber 10th.”
“We are asking everyone <strong>to</strong> have vehicles assembled on the Lions Riverfront Reserve prior <strong>to</strong> 11.30am.”
he said.
The Morgan Lions Club will be catering for lunch and after ample time <strong>to</strong> inspect the assembled
collection of brass, nickel and chrome drivers will make their own way back home.
“The original return journey <strong>to</strong>ok four days and was made even more memorable having <strong>to</strong> battle a
severe dust s<strong>to</strong>rm. This year we’re expecting wild flowers all the way”, Chairman, Rod James said.
MORGAN POLICE REPORT
In recent times there has been some media coverage of
the impact of alcohol on crime and in particular the
opening hours of licensed premises. Although our local
hotels and other licensed premises don’t have the same
late trading times as the metropolitan area, we can still
experience alcohol related crime. The recent incident
involving damage <strong>to</strong> the Morgan Police Station is one
example of this.
It is important for everyone <strong>to</strong> understand the impact of
alcohol on their own behaviour and the behaviour of
others. Publicans and employees of licensed premises
have responsibilities under the Liquor Licensing Act that
include refusing <strong>to</strong> serve people that are in<strong>to</strong>xicated.
The reason for this is obvious. But it is up <strong>to</strong> each
individual <strong>to</strong> make appropriate choices and take
responsibility for their own drinking and any subsequent
behaviour.
What many of the community may not be aware of is
powers of Licensee’s and police <strong>to</strong> ‘bar’ people from
licensed premises. These barring orders can prevent
people from attending at certain pubs, bottle shops or
other licensed premises for a number of reasons
including: behaved in an offensive or disorderly
manner; committed an offence; any other reasonable
grounds; and welfare. People can be barred for up <strong>to</strong>
three months on a first occasion and longer for
subsequent occasions.
Some complaints have recently been received about the
behaviour of patrons leaving licensed premises,
including people being in<strong>to</strong>xicated, loud and disruptive
when exiting the premises and making their way home.
People who over indulge or commit behavioural or other
offences whilst in<strong>to</strong>xicated can expect <strong>to</strong> be barred from
their local pub and potentially all other pubs in the
surrounding area.
As the warmer weather approaches, in addition <strong>to</strong>
seeing me, you will see regular visits from members of
the Waikerie, Blanche<strong>to</strong>wn and Swan Reach Police
Stations as well as officers from the Highway Patrol who
will be targeting these types of offences along with
traffic and other behavioural offences.
I will also be speaking <strong>to</strong> the Publicans and reinforcing
their obligations in regards <strong>to</strong> the responsible service of
alcohol, so please take responsibility for yourself and
look after your mates when they have had <strong>to</strong>o much.
In an unrelated matter, I have received several phone
calls from concerned residents regarding the driving
behaviour of some people. On a few different occasions
people walking their animals have nearly been hit by
passing mo<strong>to</strong>r vehicles. All they ask for is a little
consideration when passing, either by slowing down or
giving them some room.
NASHO’S MEMORIAL DEDICATION
SERVICE - CANBERRA
On Monday September 6 th
I was privileged <strong>to</strong> be part of
100 people in our group
travelling <strong>to</strong> Canberra for the
Dedication of the National
Service Memorial.
We boarded the buses at
5-30am, I travelled on the
Sturt Highway bus with pickup s<strong>to</strong>ps in Munno Para,
Renmark and Mildura, making 50 on our bus. The
second bus travelled via Murray Bridge and Pinnaroo,
meeting us in Balranald for lunch. I’ve never seen the
countryside so green or so wet as we made our way <strong>to</strong>
Canberra – a long day, reaching our Tuggeranong
motel at 11-45pm, needless <strong>to</strong> say we were all glad <strong>to</strong>
“hit the hay”.
An early start next morning, first for a <strong>to</strong>ur of Parliament
House, then across <strong>to</strong> Old Parliament House, the
aboriginal “tent city” still occupying the lawn areas
between these famous buildings. Lots of <strong>to</strong>urist and
school children also visiting these places. Next s<strong>to</strong>p,
the War Museum, for a short visit and our first glimpse
of the Memorial – a busy spot with rehearsals taking
place for the next days service. Back <strong>to</strong> the motel as 69
of the group had invitations <strong>to</strong> the reception at
Parliament House. Officials from Head Office and Subbranches
naturally had invitations then remaining
guests were selected by ballot – my name wasn’t
drawn out!
Friends reported it was held in the Great Hall, no seats,
but plenty of drinks and finally finger food. The widows
and/or mothers of the Nasho’s killed were special
guests at both functions. Newly elected PM Julia
Gillard, Tony Abbott and Bronwyn Bishop were
amongst the MP’s attending.
Wednesday September 8 th and an early breakfast - the
highlight being a Nasho in Scottish dress, serenading
us on the bagpipes. We arrived at Anzac Parade by
8-45am for most of the men <strong>to</strong> assemble for the
parade. The rest of us made our way <strong>to</strong> the seating
area on the Eastern side of the War Museum. The
weather was perfect, blue skies and a very warm sun.
We had Nasho’s from both the1951-59 intakes and the
1965-72 intakes, all looking smart in grey trousers, light
blue shirts, navy blazer and beret and wearing their
service medals. The march down Anzac Parade was
impressive, led by the Queensland pipers, followed by
the Nasho’s in the year they were drafted.
My late husband Vic
would have been in
the 1952 intake,
doing his training at
Laver<strong>to</strong>n. I was
proud <strong>to</strong> wear his
medals that day.
The Dedication
Service was quite
moving – we heard it
clearly, sadly <strong>to</strong>o far
away <strong>to</strong> see it. Speakers were General Peter Cosgrove
– Ret’d, Major Earle Jennings – Ret’d and the Governor
General of Aust. Ms Quentin Bryce who unveiled the
Commemorative Plaque. Two hymns were sung and
I’m quite sure that everyone – between 3000 and 4000
people – joined the Aust Rugby Choir in the singing.
During the laying of the wreaths, a Scottish piper,
Mr Ian Millard played the lament. The huge crowd was
silent during the reciting of the Ode, the Last Post, the
minutes silence and the Rouse <strong>to</strong> be followed by our
National Anthem. Just prior <strong>to</strong> the departure of the
official party, the Roulettes from the RAAF base did a
fly past, just over our heads. It was a very moving and
emotional service, one I will remember in years <strong>to</strong>
come.
We were then able <strong>to</strong> inspect the Memorial – very
impressive. It is dedicated <strong>to</strong> all Australian National
Servicemen, Nasho’s as we call them and in memory of
those who died. More than 287,000 young men served
in the Army, Navy and Air Force between 1951 and
1972 and 212 men died, 2 in Borneo and 210 in
Vietnam.
The Memorial is a fountain – the moving water
symbolizes the 212 Nasho’s who died. The sands<strong>to</strong>ne
plinth represents the Army, the water in the bronze
bowl represents the Navy and the Air Force is
represented by the sky reflected in the polished Sth
Aust black granite slab. The surrounding area is paved,
a quiet peaceful spot. In the 1951-59 scheme, 6862
Nasho’s were in the Navy, 23,500 in the Airforce and
about 198,000 in the Army.
Our day ended with a bus <strong>to</strong>ur up Mt Ainslie lookout
and a drive around the various embassies. Next
morning an early start, 5-15am SA time <strong>to</strong> make our
way home by 9-30pm – rather weary but grateful <strong>to</strong>
have taken part in this wonderful event.
I have an excellent book from the service, which lists
(with pho<strong>to</strong>s), all
Nasho’s killed in
action –
22 being from
South Aust.
I would be quite
happy <strong>to</strong> show
this book <strong>to</strong> anyone
who is
interested.
Thank you - One recent cold windy Sunday evening my car battery unexpectedly “died”. I was on
Morgan Ferry at the time, - drove on okay, - suddenly, - no power. No time <strong>to</strong> panic, thanks <strong>to</strong> the calm
presence of a helpful Ferry Opera<strong>to</strong>r. His first suggestion (we push-start the car) was quickly ruled
out, - au<strong>to</strong>matic vehicle. That up-hill ramp was a worry anyway. What <strong>to</strong> do Phone a friend The RAA
Can’t stay stranded. Then from the cold mist another car pulled up beside mine. Another equally calm
and helpful chap emerged, carrying jumper leads. Within moments the two had my car started. My
grateful thanks <strong>to</strong> both were answered with a cheery wave, and friendly advice, - drive and don’t stall.
Thank you <strong>to</strong> my rescuers: Morgan Ferry Opera<strong>to</strong>r Glenn MacDonald, for your assistance and
knowledge, and the (as yet) un-identified driver, and his female passenger, who not only skillfully came
<strong>to</strong> my aid, but voluntarily followed my car another 10 kms <strong>to</strong> ensure I got home safely. The kindness will
not be forgotten. Thanks boys. Julie Dawson Daniels
MORGAN PRIMARY SCHOOL
BOOK WEEK
This year the kids once again dressed up as a “book
character” for Book Week. A special assembly was held
on Friday morning with a parade of costumes and then
each student received their own book <strong>to</strong> keep which
was donated by Governing Council. Some of our
costumes included The Mad Hatter, Pirates, Jesse from
Toy S<strong>to</strong>ry, Geronimo Stil<strong>to</strong>n, The Swagman, Specky
Magee and the Wicked Witch <strong>to</strong> name a few. The 2/3/4
class dressed up
JUMP ROPE
Our annual Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off <strong>to</strong>ok place
on Friday Sept 3 rd . Students have been practicing hard
on their routines for a few weeks and they certainly put
on a great display for parents and visi<strong>to</strong>rs. After the
class routines, a delicious healthy lunch of Chicken
Kebabs, Veggie Bake, Pota<strong>to</strong> Bake and Pizza was
prepared by the Upper Primary Class. To finish off the
lunch, a delicious fruit salad with icecream was enjoyed
by all.
DALE ELLIOTT VISIT
Young ex Ramco man Dale Elliott (who is a motivational
speaker, world record holder, comedian and paraplegic)
recently visited Morgan Primary on a promotional <strong>to</strong>ur.
He has just returned from a hand cycling marathon with
a fellow paraplegic mate from Melbourne <strong>to</strong> Darwin <strong>to</strong>
raise money <strong>to</strong> treat children with club feet in Africa. He
also showed video footage <strong>to</strong> the students of his recent
world record skydive in New Zealand. From his
inspirational speech, the students have learnt that it’s
not about what you “can’t do”, it’s about saying “I must”
and just have a go!
SCIENCE OPEN NIGHT
The school recently invited families in for an open night
as part of Science Week. Students had prepared and
set up many experiments and games for parents <strong>to</strong>
participate in.
QUIZ NIGHT
Our bi-annual quiz night was held also on Friday 3 rd
Sept with a little more than interesting weather! As we
prepared <strong>to</strong> move everything over <strong>to</strong> the complex, a
furious s<strong>to</strong>rm hit, washing everything out and cutting
power. As they say – the show must go on. Thanks <strong>to</strong>
Gordon Johns<strong>to</strong>n and Will Lindner for supplying
genera<strong>to</strong>rs and lighting <strong>to</strong> the complex, the mood was
rather quirky then, 10 mins before start time, power was
res<strong>to</strong>red!! A little late starting, the night proved <strong>to</strong> be a
great one again. This year we ended up with 15 tables
of eager competi<strong>to</strong>rs ranging from 8yrs <strong>to</strong> 79yrs of age!
We had two bottle coin <strong>to</strong>sses and two lolly jar <strong>to</strong>sses
for the kids. An auction of two holiday packages, a
Crows footy, Port Power footy day pass and Monar<strong>to</strong>
Zoo pass along with our giant raffle, pushed our <strong>to</strong>tal
THE “GREAT ESCAPE” VISIT
On Thursday 16 th Sept the Cystic Fibrosis “Great
Escape” Bash cars came <strong>to</strong> visit students at Morgan
Primary. There were four different bash cars on school
grounds and students were able <strong>to</strong> sit in them, on them,
set off the sirens and music and see what they were all
about. A short speech was given on what Cystic
Fibrosis is about and an inspirational book mark was
handed out. The night before, a large contingent of students
and parents greeted the bash cars at the ferry
with a “Welcome <strong>to</strong> Morgan” banner made by the 2/3/4
class. The kids enjoyed receiving free goodies as they
crossed the river and eventually Morgan’s Wizard of Oz
truck arrived with Lucy, Kenny and Clare Fry on board.

STRUGGLE TO SAVE HERITAGE DRY DOCK IN MANNUM
Rising water levels in the Murray are good news for the river’s health,
but for Flinders University archaeologists working <strong>to</strong> conserve a
unique 19 th century dry dock at Mannum, they create an added
sense of urgency.
Excavations in December last year yielded some of the
structural secrets of the disused dry dock, which was used <strong>to</strong> repair
and refit the paddle steamers that plied the Murray’s busy trade up
until the 1920s.
Staff and volunteers from the Mannum Dock Museum and a team
of postgraduate and undergraduate students from Flinders will again
work on the site with an architect and conservationist in September
Their aim is <strong>to</strong> complete a full picture of the dock’s structure and
the environment in which it sits.
Originally built as a floating structure for use on Lake Alexandrina, the Randell Dry Dock was <strong>to</strong>wed <strong>to</strong> Mannum
and installed onshore in 1876 by Captain William Richard Randell founding father of Mannum. The installation of
the Dock at Mannum greatly extended a small existing ship building and repair facility that had been
developed by Captain Randell.
It is estimated that over half of all vessels in use on the river system used the Dock at some time and its
associated workshops consequently had a significant role in employing local shipwrights and tradesmen and provided
the core required <strong>to</strong> maintain the local ship building industry.
It is thought that only one other comparable structure existed in Albany, Western Australia, from the same time
period. Along with examples from Bermuda and Chile, the Mannum Dock is the only one that has survived.
Assessing possible threats <strong>to</strong> the dock’s integrity from rising water levels will be part of the project.
Archaeologist Britt Bur<strong>to</strong>n said that there was an urgent need <strong>to</strong> support and stabilise the dock’s timbers.
“At the current rate of deterioration, there is a window of less than ten years in which <strong>to</strong> take major preservative
action,” she said.
“Beyond this time the dock will probably be <strong>to</strong>o rotten <strong>to</strong> save. The Save Our Dry Dock group has researched
options <strong>to</strong> help slow down or halt the increasing rate of deterioration.”
In the short term, construction of a roof over the dock is being considered.
“These investigations by the Flinders University team are essential <strong>to</strong> assist in determining the right course of action
<strong>to</strong> save our Dry Dock”, said Mannum Dock Museum Chairman, Rob Bowring.
Rob further said, “The Randell Dry Dock is an integral piece of Mannum’s maritime his<strong>to</strong>ry and is one of iconic
attractions for our <strong>to</strong>wnship and the Mannum Dock Museum. Our ‘Save our Dry Dock’ committee is working tirelessly
<strong>to</strong> implement a conservation plan <strong>to</strong> ensure Mannum does not lose this vital link <strong>to</strong> the days of steam and
wooden paddle wheelers and boats on the Murray”.
The upcoming project will combine surveys and the
digging of a two-metre pit in order <strong>to</strong> expose and document
the structures of the dock. The group’s main aim is <strong>to</strong>
produce a complete, detailed technical drawing of the
dock, and activities will also include filming a short
documentary <strong>to</strong> record the archaeological activities and
overall project.
Members of the public are encouraged <strong>to</strong> come and see
the excavation in action. The Randell Dry Dock is located
at the river end of Mannum’s main street, next <strong>to</strong> the
ferry crossing at the Mannum Dock Museum.
P.S.MARION - Living his<strong>to</strong>ry
WOW. 8.30 am Wednesday 15th of September - 49 passengers embark on a journey back in time <strong>to</strong> 30
re-live the bygone days of the paddle steamer. For the next 9 hours the passengers wined, dined & were
serenaded by Warren Hardiman as they enjoyed the ever changing scenery of the magnificent Murray River.
Over four days from Wednesday 15 th <strong>to</strong> Saturday 18 th September, 147 passengers including prize winners from
the River News, Radio 5MU and The Murray Pioneer, enjoyed the picturesque scenery of our great river
between Morgan and Berri <strong>to</strong> the sound of the steam driven paddle wheel. Delicious cakes for morning and
afternoon tea were kindly baked by local ‘Morganites’ Sue Sutherland, Carol Leaney, Lorraine Bitmead and Di
Hausler and these were devoured with glee.
The PS Marion is <strong>to</strong> be slipped in Berri for repairs and maintenance before returning <strong>to</strong> Mannum in several
weeks time. The wheel house was a his<strong>to</strong>ry lesson of it’s own. The <strong>to</strong>tally professional Captain Trevor Bedford
guided the boat upstream and was accompanied by other legends of the profession - Captains Leon Wagner
(P.S.Ruby. Wentworth), Steven Coad and Dick Bromhead - and their knowledge of the River and its
idiosyncrasies was amazing. The passionate and informative volunteer crew, <strong>to</strong>tally loyal <strong>to</strong> the Marion cause,
handled their tasks on board with enthusiasm and kept everyone entertained with their experiences of the river
and love of the paddle wheelers.
Many of the passengers had an affinity with the boat as they had either worked on the Marion, their father
skippered her, or had other family connections with this proud old boat including Ron Toole from Cadell who was
a fireman on the Gem and the Marion and June Vinder from Paringa the daughter of Captain William Drabsch.
People lined the banks, waving, taking pho<strong>to</strong>graphs and asking how they could get on board.
With the help of Deb Alexander, the four one day cruises were a great success and although we only had a short
time <strong>to</strong> organise and advertise these trips, we had a wonderful response from people of all ages wishing <strong>to</strong>
experience a day cruising up the Murray River on this magnificent old paddle steamer.
Our thanks <strong>to</strong> the Morgan Museum for allowing these cruises <strong>to</strong> be promoted and advertised under their banner
and giving more visi<strong>to</strong>rs the opportunity <strong>to</strong> see what Morgan has <strong>to</strong> offer. Thanks <strong>to</strong> CEO Dean Gollan for his
support, the Mid Murray Council for the Community Bus and wood and the Mannum Dock Museum who kindly
offered Morgan the opportunity <strong>to</strong> sell these day cruises aboard the PS Marion <strong>to</strong> raise additional funds for the
Morgan Riverfront Precinct Project.
Heather has received many enquiries from people from all walks of life who would love <strong>to</strong> be part of the return
journey from Berri <strong>to</strong> her home Port of Mannum and has a list of their contact details at the ready.
Here’s Hoping!
Roderick Smith from Surrey Hills Vic<strong>to</strong>ria travelled on all four days and has posted a wonderful report with
pho<strong>to</strong>graphs on the website - www.paddleducks.co.uk -. This information is accessible by people worldwide and
we have already received positive feedback <strong>to</strong> his s<strong>to</strong>ry.
(select Forum and then scroll down <strong>to</strong> Recent Postings - PS Marion Trip <strong>to</strong> Berri)
A boat trip down our amazing Murray River is a great experience but <strong>to</strong> travel on one of the his<strong>to</strong>ric
paddle wheelers like the PS Marion is a journey back in time and we hope everyone gets the opportunity.
Country Fuel Subsidy Axed
South Australian country mo<strong>to</strong>rist will soon pay
more for fuel after the State Treasurer, Kevin Foley
announced he would axe the country fuel subsidy
scheme.
Under the scheme established in the mid 1980's <strong>to</strong>
lessen the impact of higher fuel prices the further you
travelled away from Adelaide, the State government
introduced a subsidy of 3.3 cents a litre for unleaded petrol
and 1.94 cents for on road diesel for distances
greater than 100 kilometres from Adelaide.
The peak mo<strong>to</strong>ring body, the RAA says by dropping the
subsidy, South Australian country mo<strong>to</strong>rists will pay
more for fuel, just as regional mo<strong>to</strong>rists did in the other
states when those schemes were cut.
Its another blow for South Australian mo<strong>to</strong>rists who also
face higher annual charges for a driving licence, plus a
further $2 increase for licence and registration renewals.
when the project was halted in pre-production stage.
We are hopeful there will eventually be a “next stage”,
as the amazing 1839 Expedition from Nor’ West Bend
A new venture begins..
A family venture has been
33
undertaken by local family Mickey and
Laura O’Dea.
They have chosen <strong>to</strong> remain in
Morgan and start a gardening
business called Morgan Mowing and
Maintenance.
As work in the area is sometimes hard
<strong>to</strong> get rather than be forced <strong>to</strong> leave
Morgan they recognised a need for a
service that assists people in
gardening and general odd jobs.
Mickey is capable and reliable and will
come and give you a quote for any job
big or small. There has been a need
for this service for some time and they
should be quite successful with the support of local residents within Morgan and districts. Mickey’s
specialty is gardening and will he extend his service <strong>to</strong> include cleaning of gutters, rubbish removal
and general odd jobs. Why not call him on 0429177461 and get those annoying tasks taken care of
before Summer.
It was great <strong>to</strong> be one of the lucky people <strong>to</strong> get tickets
for the Morgan <strong>to</strong> Waikerie leg, of the mighty paddle
steamer MARION’S journey up river <strong>to</strong> Berri.
The weather was beautiful, the food and drink went
down well, great scenic views, plus meeting some very
diverse and interesting people.
One person was RON TOOLE, who will be 83 in
December, {he was born in Waikerie} was deck hand,
then fireman on the MARION between 1942---1943
Ron became fireman at age 14, when the current
line, did truck driving, then went in<strong>to</strong> the army for 20
years, served in MALAYA and KOREA. He was
wounded in KOREA. When his father died, Ron flew <strong>to</strong>
