Principals’ Message
We have arrived at the half way point of what has
been a hectic and productive year for our school
community. We hope that you have witnessed our
leadership team and staff demonstrating a genuine
commitment to improving student life and learning.
All staff have embraced a collective desire to move
our school from being good to great. We have an
exciting time a head for all of us.
We have enjoyed the openness of parents in helping us
to identify areas of school operations and curriculum
that can be improved on.
Through reviews and informal consultation with
school community members, we have arrived at many
short term and longer term strategies to continue our
march forward to a point where students, staff and
parents are proud to say they are members of our
great school.
We are a school that places emphasis on a holistic
approach to student learning and students have
responded well to our new initiatives in music, sport
and service learning activities, demonstrating their
commitment to getting the most out of their days in
school. Importantly our academic program is growing
from strength to strength. The recent success of
our World Scholar teams, in the biggest academic
challenge competition in the world, is testimony to
the exceptional talents that are nurtured through
our Australian styled curriculum and our high
calibre and dedicated teaching and support staff.
Congratulations to the World Scholars Team on their
recent achievements in the World Scholar Cup Finals
and to their coach, James Unsworth for being named
the Coach Of The Year.
Our building development project will have significant
impact on student life and parent services over the
second part of the year. We have delivered on our
promise to ensure that the building works do not
disrupt our ability to continue to provide a great
school experience.
We once again call on your continued support, ideas
and issues sharing, as we strive to keep delivering on
our promise. Keep a close eye on our newsletter and
weekly email news as changed routines and parent
service delivery arrangements are communicated.
Wendy and I will be present at school during the first
week of the school holidays and would welcome parents
to drop in for discussions on any matters of concern
or to share some brilliant ideas for improvement. No
need to make an appointment, just drop in for a
coffee and a chat. Our offices have been temporarily
located to what was the admissions area on level one
just past the library.
Thanks for welcoming Wendy and myself so
generously into our school community. Your words
of encouragement and insightful advice are greatly
appreciated.
Have a great holiday, take the opportunity to spend
some quality time with your children.
REFURBISHMENT OF ADMINISTRATION OFFICE
24th JUNE – 30th SEPTEMBER (approx.)
On Friday this week, our administration office staff
will move to temporary accommodation in F8 ( the
large classroom past the library on level one) This
is to enable the refurbishment of the administration
centre, which we hope will be completed by the start
of term 4.
From the first day of term 3 parents and visitors
should sign in at the Junior reception in the
classroom wing on the ground floor. All enquiries
that previously brought you to the central office
should be directed to the junior reception. For
appointments with specific staff members, please
check in at the junior reception and the girls on the
desk will find the appropriate staff member for you.
We understand that this will be a bit awkward, but
with the re-opening of the Admin Centre at the
start of term four, your experience should be much
improved!
Senior School Parent Teacher Interviews
Semester One reports for Senior School students were
sent home last week. Enclosed was the booking form
for Parent Teacher interviews. These interviews are
scheduled for Thursday 28th July. Many students have
already booked appointments and I encourage families
to use the remainder of this term and the first few days
of next term to make sure they are booked in.
A Suitcase full of Surprises
What a shame that Mr Suffolk missed the premiere
performance of his play, “A Suitcase Full of Surprises”.
I am sure that he would have been very proud of our
Senior School cast who did him proud. My thanks to
Mrs Warren who stepped up to fill Mr Suffolk’s shoes at
late notice and all who rallied around to make sure the
performance was a success.
Scholaroos
Huge congratulations to our ten teams who performed so
well at the Global round of the World Scholars Cup. We
recognised their achievements at a special assembly on
Thursday afternoon. Mr Unsworth has given full details
elsewhere but he may have neglected to mention that
he was awarded a trophy for the best coach!! Well done
Mr James.
No Pain, No Gain
No, this is not about the merits of playing Rugby!!
Seven times Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong,
believes that pain can be used to help us. In addition
to the physical pain that he endured while training and
racing, he also endured testicular cancer. Armstrong
trained himself to use the pain he felt as a motivating
tool. His book, “It’s not about the bike” is a great read.
19th- century German philosopher, poet and composer,
Friedrich Nietzsche, penned an adage that said “That
which doesn’t kill us makes us stronger”. In difficult
situations in your life, find out what reasons or lessons
lie within and use the trial not as an excuse to revert to
hopelessness, but as a boost to break through to victory.
A tiny grain of sand can become an intense irritant in
an oyster shell. In response to the irritation, the oyster
deposits layers of calcium carbonate on the grain of sand,
which over time forms a pearl. In the same way some of
the irritations in your life will produce precious treasures
in your life and character that would never have appeared
had the irritation not been present initially. Learn to treat
adversity and pain as a tool for improvement.
Ian Martineau, Head of Senior School
Senior Drama Production
I would like to extend
enormous congratulations to
the performers and technical
crew in this year’s Senior
School production. The show
was performed on Wednesday
evening and Thursday matinee
this week.
This year, the piece was written by our own Director
of Performing Arts, Mr Jon Suffolk and was titled “A
Suitcase Full of Surprises”. Jon drew his inspiration
from the Complicite workshop he, I and some fortunate
students attended last year.
The students worked
exceptionally hard on this year’s
production and performed
excellently, impressing
audiences with their acting,
dancing and ensemble work.
Jon and I would like to thank
the students for their hard
work, as well as the technical
crew, Mr Rod Gardiner who
stepped in at the last minute to
assist me with final directions
and technical aspects, and all
the staff who helped support the production in a myriad
of ways. It really was a team effort.
The Middle School Production auditions
for the play “Hating Alison Ashley” took
place in Week 8 of Term 2 and the cast
list was announced last Friday. Well done
to all the students who auditioned. There
was an incredible amount of interest this
year and as such, it was difficult for Jon
and me to make our final decisions. Students who have
been selected as cast members will automatically be
enrolled into the Middle School Production ASA, which
will take place on Tuesdays in Term 3 and 4.
Mr B’s Careers Corner
Career Voyage Survey in Year 10
Shortly, Year 10 students will be taking part in the Career Voyage program at school. Career Voyage, designed by
JIIG-CAL Australia, takes students through a decision making process by asking them a series of questions based on
their job interests.
It aims to broaden horizons by looking at large range of occupations.
Sometimes the jobs suggested confirm a student’s existing ideas and provide backup by listing similar jobs. For other
students, the program often suggests jobs not heard of or not previously considered. We hope that the results of this
program will assist our Year 10 students with their subject selections for Year 11 and also with their work experience
preparations that will happen later this year. If you have a child in Year 10, I would ask you speak to him or her about
the results that they get, and discuss as a family any issues that may arise from the results.
From the Middle School
On reflection Semester One has absolutely flown by for
me. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to meet all of the
middle school students and to celebrate their successes
not only in the classroom but in all facets of school life.
I have been pleased with the level of participation in
sport, the new extended music program incorporating
the bands and events such as World Scholars Cup.
My philosophy is that we need to give our students
opportunities to excel. All students have enhanced
abilities in one or more areas, sometimes these do not
identify themselves easily so in order for these to present
themselves we need to give students choice and a broad
curriculum. We do this at AISM by offering at extensive
ASA program and a broad NSW Curriculum.
Semester Reports
This week each Middle School student will bring home
their semester report. Please take the time to go through
the report with your child. It is extremely important to
identify positive aspects of the report and encourage
your child to reflect on their achievements.
World Scholars Cup
I wish to congratulate those students from Middle School
that participated in the World Scholar’s Cup. The World
Scholar’s Cup was in Kuala Lumpur this year, and the
student’s came home with many medals which were very
well deserved.
Mrs. Warren’s Welfare Corner
I am signing off as Welfare Coordinator as of the end of
Term 2. In Term 3, the school welcomes back Mrs Anna
Broadbent from her maternity leave.
By now, all parents should have come across the
Student Code of Conduct that was introduced to Middle
and Senior School students in Week 7 and Junior School
students in Week 8 during the Wednesday Welfare
time. The purpose of this document is to remind
students about their rights and responsibilities, as well
as the school expectations. The goal is to see greater
enforcement of these expectations in Term 3. In order
to assist this process, parents need to help students
make sure they have and wear correct uniform.
The Manners Monitors came into practice in Week 9
this term as part of the SRC Manners Matters program.
SRC students will take turns acting as Manners Monitors
for the day, helping to remind students to use their
manners at the canteen, in the playground, in class and
on the stairwells. Thank you to the SRC students who
have undertaken this responsibility with gusto.
My experience as Welfare Coordinator has been
extremely enjoyable and I thank everyone who has
supported me along the way.
Imagination, Dreaming and White Bunnies
The Yearbook ASA in 2011 is off to an imaginative start! A committed group of students have been busily
putting together pages to reflect our learning community. We have also been lucky enough to work with
the graphic design company, Wanderloft, who have come on board to support the student work and
workshop different ideas with them. Our concept is one of imagination, dreaming and hope, to reflect
the new phase of AISM’s life. I would like to thank Nicole, Ashley, Deina, Eilidh, Lynette, Jogen and
Ruairi for their commitment and inspiration! Next term, each class will have the chance
to create a concept for their own page and contribute photos. Get thinking and help to
make the 2011 Yearbook a true and creative representation of this year!
Miss Joanna Nicholson
Our year 8 chemists created and illustrated a children’s story book based on their research of an
element from the periodic table. They visited our Year 3 classes to share their creations.
From the Junior School
It has been a short term, and a busy term and as we
ready ourselves for the holiday break I thought I would
take the opportunity to share some ideas about how you
can assist your child with their learning during the break.
It is important to keep up some sort of routine with
reading, it doesn’t have to be everyday, but encourage
reading throughout the break. The teachers notice that
some of our students do regress a little with their reading
during holiday periods.
There are also opportunities to work with your children
on the Numeracy skills. Many parents set up a schedule
of activities during the break and children telling the time
of the activities and checking the time on the clock can
help reinforce this concept. When shopping talk to your
children about the cost of the items being purchased.
They can do some addition, subtraction, rounding and
estimation calculations around this. Perhaps your child
enjoys cooking, this can be a good opportunity to discuss
measurements.
Junior School Performing Arts
Junior School Choral Festival
Congratulations to 2G and 4G, winners of the 2nd
Junior School Choral Festival.
Last Wednesday a very excited Junior School performed
as class choirs to sing songs in different languages, from
simple unison melodies to more complicated partner
songs, canon and harmony work. The winning classes
now keep the Choral Festival Shield in their classrooms
until the end of the year.
The holidays also present many opportunities for social
development. Playing with other children, or having your
children do the talking when going shopping or eating
out. This has the potential to build their confidence when
speaking in front of strangers.
Of course holiday periods offer many opportunities
for children to simply learn about the world around,
experiencing new cultures, sights, sounds and smells.
Many of us go to the beach and there is much learning
about nature that can be on offer. Just a few ideas to
continue the learning journey over the next three weeks.
You will have received your child’s academic report
this week. We will be having parent teacher interviews
as a follow up to the reports at the beginning of next
term. Expect a booking sheet to be sent home to you at
beginning of week one after
the break.
The developing high standard of singing in the Junior
School made the judging a hard decision for our
adjudicator, Mr. Jon Suffolk, and the results were close.
We were entertained by the winners of our Poetry
competition while the decisions were being made.
Thanks to Mr. Jon Suffolk, our adjudicator and Miss Poh
our accompanist.
Susan Bal-Short,
I would like to thank you
for all of your support this
semester and hope you have
a restful holiday break.
HSC Drama Weekend at Australian International
School Singapore 10th – 12 June
The Year 11 and 12
elective Drama students
were accompanied to
AISS by Mrs. Gardiner
and myself to focus
on HSC Drama. Guest
presenters from Sydney
Dr Miranda Jefferson
and Mr Costa Loucopoulos guided the students through
the revision of the text studies, group performance
projects and individual projects. Dr Jefferson works
at Sydney University and has been Supervisor of HSC
Drama Marking, a teacher at Newtown High School of
the Performing Arts and is currently on the National
Curriculum writing team
for Drama Education. Mr
Loucopoulos is a Senior
HSC Marker, parttime
teacher at South
Sydney High School and
is currently completing
his PHD in Drama
Education.
The students were excited by the opportunity to
work with such quality educators and to share the
experience with other interested drama students in
the region. The Year 11 students had the good fortune
of spending two lengthy sessions with Dr Jefferson
exploring playbuilding techniques.
Most of the students
were billeted by AISS
families and have made
new friendships from the
experience. It is hoped
that future workshop
programs can be shared
by AISM and AISS in the
coming years.
Making Meaning On Screen Workshops, 18-20th
August
A workshop program conducted by Mr Colin
Schumacher on making narrative videos will be held
during Term 3. Colin has extensive experience as a
drama teacher, lecturer, performer and writer and will
be visiting AISM from the 18th – 20th August.
Selected students from Years 8. 9 and 10 will have
the opportunity of attending day long sessions with
him using the skills and techniques that Colin has
developed while writing his teaching manuals “Making
Meaning on Screen” and “Creating the Seamless
Screen Story.” Staff will be able to attend one of
his workshops on Saturday 20th which will assist in
developing strategies for teaching video across the
school.
“The musician is constantly adjusting decisions on
tempo, tone, style, rhythm, phrasing, and feeling
- training the brain to become incredibly good at
organizing and conducting numerous activities at
once. Dedicated practice of this orchestration can
have a great payoff for lifelong attentional skills,
intelligence, and an ability for self-knowledge and
expression.”
It has been a busy semester in the Middle and
Senior School in music and next term promises to be
exciting as well. Term 3 includes the Music Showcase
Concert in week 9. I encourage all students to join a
group, make a group and enjoy playing music!
I am particularly keen for new students to join the
AISM Orchestra. This will be the leading group here
at school and we are developing a program of music
of a variety of styles for performances in and out of
school in the remainder of the year. It is an exciting
time for the orchestra which has quickly developed
over the last term. Please see Mr. McCormick about
joining and now is a good time to join as we will be
starting new pieces next term.
ASA Activities Term 3
Please note some changes to the following Middle
and Senior School Schedule:
Monday afternoon: AISM Orchestra – new members
all welcome!
Tuesday afternoon: Training Band – this is a
continuation of the Beginning Band program
Wednesday afternoon: Starter Strings – this is a new
group for the Middle School. Students should see Mr.
McCormick if they are interested
Lunchtimes
Rock Bands will continue.
Wednesday lunch will be Gamelan Day. This is open
to all students. Come along and have a play.
Thursday lunch is the second Training Band practice
for those students unavailable on Tuesdays and also
for those who want an additional practice.
World Scholars Cup Performance
On Sunday last, 3 members of the AISM Orchestra
performed at the World Scholars Cup ceremony held
Athletics Carnival 2011
A new venue, fantastic weather, hundreds of enthusiastic
students and a heap of hard working teachers and parents,
equal a very successful carnival. On Wednesday 16th June,
AISM held it’s annual Athletics Carnival, bussing our Middle
and Senior students to the UNITEN Mini Stadium at Bangi.
Right from the first start, records began to tumble as a high
standard of competition was revealed. In all, 35 records
throughout the day disappeared with many exceptional
displays of athletic ability. As the program ticked over it
became apparent that both age championship honours and
house championship points were going to be extremely
tight as many close tussles were observed on both the track
and in the field. As the result sheets rolled in and points
were tallied the final results became clearer.
As I have often stated in the past, these carnivals are not
run by a couple of staff but are powered by a well oiled unit
of parents and staff working together to provide a fun and
quality event for the students. I for one certainly appreciate
the help from this hard working group from our school
community and thank them for the wonderful job they do.
Congratulations to all competitors. It was great to see the
large number of students stepping out of their comfort zone
and participating in events for fun and house spirit.
Ryan Wong To Compete
In International Golf
Championships
Ryan Wong (6G) has been in the
Junior Golf scene since he was 7
years old, competing in the local
Under 8 years old category. He was
the overall champion for the Elite
Circuit for the Under 8 that year.
Since then, he has gone on to
win the Under 10 in Year 2009
and was Under 11 Champion in
the tournament organised by the Malaysian Golf
Association last year. He won numerous top finishes
in the local golf scene.
He was also the Under 10 age group runners-up in
the Jakarta World Junior Golf Tournament held in
Indonesia last year and also 3rd runners-up in the
Under 10 in Thailand in 2009.
In July, Ryan will be heading for the United States
of America where he has qualified to play in some of
World Junior Championships tournaments. They are :
• Callaway Junior World Champs in San Diego,
California at Rancho Bernardo Golf and Country
Club,
• Optimist International Golf Championship and
the Optimist World Cup in West Palm Beach,
Florida at PGA National Golf Resort,
• US Kids World Championshipas in North Carolina
at Pinehurst Golf Club.
He has a handicap of 3, which is fantastic for someone
his age. He is also the first Junior to gain sponsorship
from Mizuno outside of Japan.
AISM Badminton Team Trains
with FORZA Badminton Academy
On Saturday, 18th
of June, the AISM
Badminton Academy
members, accompanied
by Cikgu Kasim and
Ms. Ratha travelled 45
minutes by car to Sri
Sinar Badminton Centre
in Kepong. This is the
home for the FORZA Badminton Academy. There
were 10 badminton courts and 6 coaches. One of
the coaches was a former Malaysian player.
We trained with FORZA Badminton Academy
members. It was another great new experience for
us after competing at Nexus International School’s
U15 Badminton Tournament not long ago. We trained
for 2 hours non-stop in a hot hall because there were
no air conditioners to prevent the shuttle cocks from
being blown away, so it was a little bit hard to play
but still, we were happy meeting with the players
and coaches and appreciated the new experience.
We thank Cikgu Kasim for organising this memorable
event.
Sensational Home Ground Debut for
AISM Rugby Roos
“Our Home Ground is our fortress boys.” said Mr
Coombes at Tuesday night training, “We do not lose
here!” ...................And so it was, as the Rugby Roos
demolished KTJ 31 – 0 at AISM last Thursday.
In front of a small but
vocal crowd, the boys put
on five un-answered tries
and in the process showed
their growing maturity as a
team unit. Following some
sustained hard running
from the backs, Safwan
Sulaiman was the first Roo to cross the KTJ line with
some of his trademark ‘sneaky stuff’ around the fringe
of the scrum. Boramy Unn then added to the first half
score line with some straight hard running, leaving
everyone in his wake on his way to the try line. The
Roo’s went to half time two tries up.
The second half saw continued
dominance by the AISM Roo’s.
Passes were being strung together
and there were bodies in motion.
Kevin Kam scored his first ever try
swooping on a loose ball and out
sprinting everyone to the KTJ try
line. Jack Miller scored next with
a well deserved try on the back of
a perfectly executed tap move and
a sweetly timed pass from his lock
partner, Mark DeVries. Alex McLaws
eventually got over the line to score AISM’s final try
after a few near misses.
Once again, Mitch Booker was a reliable link to his
outside backs and Alex McLaw made terrific ground all
day. Haziq Hanip had an immediate impact when he
was introduced into the game, pulling off some copybook
tackles and some excellent ball distribution from
the breakdown.
In the forwards, Jack Miller
and Jian Law lead the
way defensively. The line
out functioned well with
a couple of steals against
the throw. Big Zack,
Mark DeVries and Greg
Mansuhkani combined well
in Jack’s injury absence to disrupt the KTJ lineout and
continually secure their own possession.
One of the pleasing aspects of this game was the
positive contribution that the inter-change players
made. Standouts were; Amin, who tried hard in
defence, Anish, who rucked vigorously and Kevin,
who was positioned so well that he scored a try!
Although the Roos prevented KTJ from crossing their
line, there is still a lot of room for improvement in
defence. Persistence at training will see this aspect of
our game improve.
The AISM Rugby Roos are showing real promise. With
every game we play we learn more about ‘the game
they play in heaven’...........keep training hard boys,
you are doing yourselves and the school community
proud!
A big thank you to the spectators who came out to
show their support and to Mr Martineau, who gave up
his time to referee the match. Checkout just who we
Senior School Soccer Friendly vs
Alnoor International School
On Monday afternoon the
20th, the AISM Senior
Boys played their first
game for the year, against
the Alnoor International
School, at AISM.
AISM won the match
2-1 thanks to a goal by
Sam Leetham and Alnoor
scoring an own goal. It
was a good start to the
year with all the players
contributing. The game
demonstrated many positives for the team, especially
the organization and solidity in defence and the
skills of individual players. The game provided a
good opportunity for the boys to play together and
see where they need to improve in preparation for
participation in the international school sport season
in term 3.
Best players for AISM were Nathan in centre of defence,
showing a high level of leadership in organizing the
other players and reading the play well to cut the
opponents attacking chances to a minimum, Saf who
hit the ball hard all day, continually winning the ball
in midfield, and Darren who dominated the right
side of the field continually dispossessing his direct
opponent and starting many attacking moves.
Thanks to Mr. Nasyarul for giving advice to students
about the finer points of
the game and in organizing
the referee. Thanks
also to the teachers and
students who came down
to support the boys.
Alice Smith receive a Roo’d reception
at AISM
The AISM Roos dug deep on
Wednesday 22nd of June to close
out a determined Alice Smith School
attack and continue their unbeaten
run at home with a 26 – 10 victory.
The boys have improved with every
outing this year and this game was by
far their best effort. It needed to be
to rise above a very determined and
talented Alice Smith outfit.
Alice Smith got off to an early lead with a couple of
very soft tries but the Roos rallied before the end of the
first period to score with a trademark Saffy dart from
the scrum base and a confident conversion from Mitch
Booker.
At the break Mr Coombes made his thoughts pretty clear
and the Roos responded early in the second period when
Mark DeVries scored a try after an impressive display of
drawing and passing. Mitch converted again and then
went on to score a well deserved try himself.
Alice Smith attacked furiously during the last period
and only determined defence by the Roos kept them
scoreless. Our two Kevins put their bodies on the line
on different occasions to thwart certain Alice Smith tries
and Jian sealed the victory when he crossed under the
posts from a well executed tap move on the bell.
This game was by far the greatest challenge the Roos
have faced.....and they were equal to the task. Our
team defence still needs a lot of sharpening up but our
individual tackling was awesome. By the last period,
most of the Alice Smith boys couldn’t get rid of the ball
quick enough to avoid another crushing Roos tackle!
On Saturday 18th June the AISM U’10 and U’12 boys
took on the Kickabola Soccer Academy. It was a very
exciting morning of soccer. The U’10 team won with a
very impressive score of 10-0 and the U’12 2-0.
Well done to all of the boys for their fabulous energy,
enthusiasm and commitment towards their training and
games throughout Semester One.
A big thank you to Mr Nasyarul, Mr Kasim and all of the
wonderful and supportive parents.
Harriet Fearon, Junior School Sport coordinator
Everybody in the team had a great game and to name
the best players would be to name the whole team but
Mitch Booker who ran hard all day, scored a try and
kicked three conversions probably had the biggest
individual impact on the game.
The Roos would like to wish our hardworking, hamburger
eating, hooker Greg farewell and good luck with his new
life in Indonesia – You’ll be missed mate. We would also
like to thank Mr Martineau once again for blowing the
whistle and all the parents, teachers and students who
combined to support the Roo’s and rugby at AISM.
Scholaroos Take on the World
This year, World Scholar’s Cup reached its largest ever
size. In 2011 teams had to qualify through a regional
round for the first time, with only the top half of every
region qualifying. It was a great honour therefore, when
all of our eight teams qualified for the World Finals. So
when we arrived to the World Finals, to compete with
750 students from more than 25 different countries, we
were up against only the very best of each region.
Before getting to the specifics
of the achievements, first let
me say how proud I am of
all of this year’s squad, for
so many reasons other than
the results. Firstly, of all of
the Scholaroos for staying in
the ‘hostel, while watching
everyone else move out.
Second, of our musical trio, Hee Yoon Park, Petra Tang and
Fergus Wong, who did us so proud, opening the show at
the awards ceremony with a sublime performance. Third,
of all of the Scholaroos for demonstrating leadership in
the scavenger hunt, in conga lines and at the karaoke
night.
Ok, now to the serious stuff…
I should begin with our Junior
Division Captain, Ashwen
Parthiban. His name should
for ever more be called from
the mountain top. This young
man boldly went where no
Scholaroo has been before.
Ashwen won the Silver medal for Science! That is BIG!
But he didn’t stop there, he also won 8th place overall
across the four subjects, 10th place in debating and not
surprisingly 5th place OVERALL in the competition – That
is the total combined score of tests in four subjects, plus
debating , plus essay writing. Our successes didn’t stop
there however, Ashwen’s team of Emma McLaughlin,
Eliza Chew and Ashwen, gained another massive honour,
by receiving the Bronze Medal overall for the challenge.
This meant that they were the 3rd highest scoring
team across four subjects – Science, Literature, Urban
Planning and the Arts. In addition to this, this team also
went undefeated through all of the debate rounds and
received the massive honour of finishing as the 7th place
team overall in the total combined, across all events –
multiple-choice, debate and essay writing!
Not to be outdone, our Senior
Division Captain, Izzah
Ibrahim placed 9th overall in
debate, while her team-mate
Eliza Versluis placed 8th. It
was not surprising therefore,
when the team of Izzah,
Eliza and Petra Tang, who
went undefeated through
the debate rounds, won the huge honour of being the 5th
placed debate team overall. In debating on a whole, we
did extremely well, with two teams remaining undefeated
through three rounds and five of our other teams winning
two out of three rounds. In addition to this, we also had
success in Essay Writing, with the team of Fergus Wong,
Farmehr Farhour and Joanne Tay finishing tenth in the
essay writing competition.
It is a great privilege to be associated with them. To this
end, I was honoured at this year’s world finals when I
was awarded ’Coach of the Year’. This award is really only
a reflection of the hard work that the kids themselves
have put it. Thank you guys!
‘Thank yous’ must also go out to a number of other
people, as it truly does ‘take a village to raise a child’.
Thank you to the parents involved, to both the AISM
Parents Association and the Australian Trade Commission
(AUSTRADE) for their sponsorship, to the school and to
my colleagues, Mrs Sandi Clarke, Ms Gail Robertson and
Mr Malcolm McCormick, for your dedication and hard
work for the kids. Now… Let’s do it all again next year,
bigger and better again!
LEARNING ENGLISH TAKES TIME
In ESL, we focus on students developing a mastery of the
English language.
The starting point is social and classroom conversation
known as BICS (Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills).
Most students develop in this area quickly once they are
immersed in an English speaking environment, like our
school. For some students though, correctness in English
speech patterns requires a more concentrated effort.
Alongside basic communication lies academic proficiency
(Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency - CALP) which
takes longer to develop. Each student needs to master
listening, speaking, reading and writing skills at age
appropriate levels. It involves an ever-expanding vocabulary
as well as the skills to recall, understand, compare, classify,
evaluate and infer within many contexts and specific
academic studies.
It takes between five to seven years to develop CALP and
can take up to even ten years if the student does not have
adequate support, at school and home, or a capacity for
learning languages. Catching up with peers in a classroom
setting is much more difficult than socialising using BICS.
A purposefully written text or online program for ESL/EAL
learners is a highly desirable approach that increasingly
expands listening skills, reading comprehension skills, new
grammar and writing skills. As English skills improve the text
can be reduced and language can be manipulated in a more
creative way.
Message From Health Services
Back To School
To help ease back-to-school butterflies, try to transition
kids into a consistent school-night routine a few days
before school starts. Also make sure that they:
• Get enough sleep (establish a reasonable bedtime
so that they’ll be well-rested and ready to learn in the
morning)
• Eat a healthy breakfast (they’re more alert and do
better in school if they eat a good breakfast every day)
• Make sure that they bring healthy snacks to school
and not sugar filled snacks that not only rot teeth but
offer no nutritional value to the growing body.
Although it’s normal to be anxious in any new situation,
a few kids develop real physical symptoms, such as
headaches or stomachaches, associated with the start
of school. If you’re concerned that your child’s worries
go beyond the normal back-to-school jitters, speak with
your child’s doctor, school nurse, teacher, or school
counselor.
Absence From Sports Activities
Any student who cannot participate in swimming or any
sport activity needs to have a letter from the parents.
Mrs Mac, the school nurse, will not be able to supply
letters to the sport teacher on their behalf.
Female students who have their menstruation are
encouraged to participate in all sport activities as usual.
Services .Both exceptional students who not only have
a willingness to learn but to take time and effort to care
for other students who are unwell.
International Award. A quote
from Tim:
“A valuable experience.”
Thank you to all who have signed up as Link Parents
( formally known as Link Ladies) here at AISM. A link
Parent provides general advice by email to potential
parent’s on services / housing / shopping / kids’
activities etc in the area they live in. This is already
proving to be a valuable tool for potential parents by
providing a link in our school community.
We still have the following areas to fill Bangsar –
(Junior Parent) , Ampang area – (Junior / Middle or
Senior parent) and a parent from the Australian High
Commission. If you’d like to know more about this
role and feel you can help out then please email
