The matec machine concept – an ingenious modular system
matec’s machine tool conception is based on standard machines as well
as custom-made machines. Planning is always based on our customer’s
specific machining tasks.
Choosing a basic machine from our programme marks the beginning of
each planning. A great variety of options, e.g. CNC round and tilting
tables, 5-axis milling heads, infinitely variable NC heads, linear drives,
handling systems, tools, and devices turn basic machines into complete
solutions. The “clever-engineered” matec modular component system
allows to cover nearly all customer requests in metal cutting.
The traveling column series has been developed for single-part and series
production. Whether used for twin-table machining with rotary table or
tail stock, multiple clamping or single-part manufacturing of voluminous
parts, this machine group covers nearly all fields of application. Stability,
precision and high speed are characteristics of these machines.
Machines
Traveling column series
Outstanding features of the traveling column series are long traverse paths,
horizontally and vertically swiveling machine spindles, easy mounting of
clamping units as well as automatic loading by means of external loading
systems. A swivel head for horizontal and vertical machining on 5 sides and
3D characterizes the HV machines. The machines are available in a variety
of configurations.
Turning and milling in one machine
Each HV machine can be turned into a milling/turning center for series production.
If work parts are best manufactured by complete machining this can
be done in max. two clampings. The swivel head provides for five-side machining
during drilling and milling processes and during the turning process it
allows the application of multifunctional lathe tools in all angles.
Maximum flexibility – The HV series offers machine concepts for every machining tasks
The traveling column machines are ideally suited for the machining of long,
bulky workpieces in one clamping. Large machine tables allow multiple clamping
or twin-table machining. While the traveling column is machining one or
more workpieces in the first working area, raw parts can be set up in the
second working area during processing time.
The possibilities of the HV machines for the machining of 5 sides or 3D of
any kind of work parts are almost unlimited. The long X-axis and a swivel
head tilting 105° continuously to both sides, with SK or HSK tapers, in combination
with a variety of CNC rotary tables make these machines infinitely
flexible.
Flexible machining centers with universal milling head
configurated as mill/turn center for the machining of parts in one clamping
HVU series
The significant characteristic of the HVU series is a 2-axis universal milling head with 45° swivel
range. The tools can be utilized in horizontal machining position in the Y-axis. This allows for
new designs in the working area, along with more innovative machine concepts, and therefore
more economical manufacturing solutions for the user.
A CNC rotary table with horizontal plan disk, adapted to the size of the workparts, allows for
the machining of comparatively big workparts in combination with a short Y-axis (1,070/1,200/
1,400 mm). Circular parts with diameters of up to 5,000 mm can be machined. A rotary table
with direct drive turns the HVU machines into mill/turn centers.
The pictures below show a matec-50 HVU, configurated as mill/turn center, for the machining of
stainless steel. For this customer-specific application, the machine is equipped with a rotary table
with direct drive, diameter 2,200 mm and 200 rpm max. The rotary table is used for turning and
positioning. A second CNC rotary table with counter-bearing for undulated workparts and a
pick-up magazine for lathe tools up to a length of 1,000 mm complete the machine. In order to
avoid vibrations in consequence of the oscillation of the thin-walled work-parts, only massive
lathe tools are in use. For tool holding and rotary support of overlong lathe tools, a special tool
holding device designed by matec is fixed to the spindle stock.
Manufacturing of aluminium moulds on customized matec machines
Once a matec - always a matec
matec-30 P has a spacious clamping area for large parts and/or small parts in a row - perfect for long unmanned machining cycles
Tool and mould maker Reinhold Schraml bought his first matec
machining center in 1996. His choice was based on recommendation
from the competitive environment. His satisfaction with the
brand matec inevitably lead to the purchase of additional customized
matec machines. Meanwhile the machinery of the company
holds six matecs.
Situated in the small town of Waldershof in the Northeastern part of Bavaria, tool and
mould maker Schraml has specialized in the manufacturing of aluminium moulds, which
are used for the foaming of various parts for automotive and household appliances.
These foam-parts, usually EPS (polystyrole), EPP (polypropylene) or PUR (polyurethane),
are constructively utilized for upholstery, shock absorbance oder heat insulation, or form
rigid packaging material for transportation and stockage of fragile decorous parts for
cars or white goods.
Approximately 80% of the moulds are ordered by the automotive industry and its suppliers,
20% are delivered to the manufacturers of heating, ventilation and solar systems,
as well as household appliances. All automobile manufacturers of German origin and
many of other countries are customers of Schraml, either directly or via suppliers, and so
are the renowned brands in the heating systems sector. Recently Schraml and his 35
employees won the European SPE Grand Innovation Award for the development and
production of tools for a light-weight seat-back in the BMW series 5.
Foaming tools for the gloss and glamour of our cars
The aluminium EPP moulds are sized from 300 x 300 x 300 mm up to 2,500 x 2,000
x 1,500 mm. Temperatures of at least 160 °C and a pressure of 5 bar are necessary to
transform the basic granulate into a foam-part with high surface density and geometrical
exactness. These parts are for instance utilized for the protected transport of classy chrome-plated
radiator grills and other decorative parts on cars, and the protection of coated
and ready-for-assembly parts for various applications. These parts form outer and
inner layers of doors, walls or ceilings, they insulate heating systems, refrigerators and
bath-tubs, and are often foamed in one single piece. This procedure requires very large
moulds - the machining of such a mould is a demanding task for the machining center
EPP mould for inside layer of cycle helmet
Industrial
Our customers
purchased last, a matec-30 P, equipped with a 2-axis CNC swivel head with direct
drive. In these cases, the traveling paths of 3,000 x 3,000 x 1,300 mm in XYZ are
used to full capacity.
The first matec machine - running 14 years around the clock
But now back to the first matec in Schraml’s machinery. In 1996, eight years after the
founding of his company, Schraml finally entered the era of CNC machining, which
meant to abandon the copy-milling of prototypes, usually made of wood. At that time
the company matec had only been on the market for four years. But even then, in
1996, Erich Unger and matec were renowned in the region. A company in Schraml’s
competitive environment was already working on a matec, and was very satisfied with
the performance of the machine. Reinhold Schraml received the advice to contact
Erich Unger. And he did. The convincing result: a 3-axis gantry machine matec-30 P,
which perfectly met his requirements, equipped with traveling paths of 2,500 x 2,000
x 600 mm in XYZ. This machine was to be Schraml’s first matec and at the same time
the 53rd to leave the matec plant in Köngen. After 14 years in operation the machine
still does the same good chipping job. Plainly speaking: Schraml has the machines
working in three shifts – if necessary, including the weekends. 168 hours per week are
usual business. The six matec machines all have spacious clamping areas, so they can
be loaded with as many workparts as necessary for an unmanned shift.
From copy-milling straight into CNC machining
Schraml’s CNC era started up with a special kind of “remote control”. Schraml’s son
Alexander was at that time studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of
Regensburg/Bavaria. Since none of the employees had the skills to program the
newly purchased machine, he used his spare time in Regensburg to write the necessary
software programs and sent them to his father. This was a perfect arrangement.
Two years later the increasing order volume called for another CNC machining center.
This time a matec-30 L was ordered. After 4 years of experience in 3-axis CNC
machining, Schraml was ready for the advantages of 5-axis machining. Erich Unger
recommended the gantry machine matec-30 P with 3,000 x 2,500 x 1,100 mm in
XYZ and a 2-axis milling head. The changeover from 3-axis programming to 5- axis
programming was eased by CAD/CAM systems, which had meanwhile been developed
especially for small to medium-sized tool and mould making companies.
EPP mould knee-pad/automotive Mould for insulation of solar springs
sectors + applications
in different industrial sectors and all over the world
Extensive programming was no longer an issue. The advantages
of 5-axis machining are obvious: complete machining
of complex parts in one clamping, reduced eroding times
and tool wear-out, plus shorter set-up times. The result: shorter
cycles and faster delivery, superior quality, higher utilization
of machinery and a more competitive calculation of
costs. The customer’s benefit is enormous.
Every two years a new matec machine was ordered: no. 4:
a 30 HV with CNC rotary table and CNC swiveling axis,
no. 5: an even larger 30 HV with 1,000 mm CNC rotary
table and CNC swiveling axis and finally no. 6, a large 30
P with 3,000 x 3,000 x 1,300 mm with 2-axis CNC swivel
head with direct drive, continuous C-axis und linear drive in
X- and Y-axis.
Thousands of drill-holes in each mould
The machining of aluminium is far more dynamic than the
machining of steel. The chipping rate often amounts to 90%.
Especially the latter four of the six matec machines are
custom-tailored for this task. The high dynamics of 5-axis
simultaneous machining facilitate milling procedures even in
deep cavities. The same high dynamics are required for the
drilling of thousands of blast pipes with diameters from 3 to
12 mm. The red-and-grey matec machines perform this task
with excellence.
Very short delivery time as customer’s benefit
All matec machines are equipped with Heidenhain CNC
controls, no. 2 to 6 specifically with the iTNC 530, which
results in flexibility in machine operation and continuity in
programming. On top the machines are equipped with
Haimerpower shrink chucks. They allow for high surface
precision even in deep cavities.
Both managing directors, Reinhold Schraml and his son
Alexander, and the machine operators are positive about
the decision to act on the technical advice of Erich Unger.
„He listens actively and translates our requirements into tailor-made
machine concepts from matec’s intelligent modular
system,“ the Schramls voice concordantly. The modular
system has more advantages : „When we have decided on
a new machine, we want to profit from it with the least possible
delay,“ Alexander Schraml says. „Due to the modular
system, matec can keep delivery time short. We know this
by experience, considering, for example, our recent order.
This machine is the perfect combination of the highly diverse
requirements we had. We needed a working area of
3,000 x 3,000 x 1,300 mm, plus a 2-axis CNC milling
head with direct drive and continuous C-axis and many
other technical features. This machine combines maximum
flexibility and highest operating grade. Whether we have a
very large workpiece, a couple of medium-sized parts with
differing machining tasks, or a number of small parts, each
order can be clamped quite flexibly on the machine table.
Perfect conditions for unmanned night shifts and for weekends.
When we put out the lights and lock the doors in the
evening, the matec machines unperturbedly continue their
work with very few cases of malfunctions, necessitating service
in the last couple of years. If necessary at all, any
spare parts ordered before 5 pm are being delievered the
following morning at 6 am.“
