HVU series
The significant characteristic of the HVU series is a 2-axis universal milling head with 45° swivel
range. The tools can be utilized in horizontal machining position in the Y-axis. This allows for
new designs in the working area, along with more innovative machine concepts, and therefore
more economical manufacturing solutions for the user.
A CNC rotary table with horizontal plan disk, adapted to the size of the workparts, allows for
the machining of comparatively big workparts in combination with a short Y-axis (1,070/1,200/
1,400 mm). Circular parts with diameters of up to 5,000 mm can be machined. A rotary table
with direct drive turns the HVU machines into mill/turn centers.
The pictures below show a matec-50 HVU, configurated as mill/turn center, for the machining of
stainless steel. For this customer-specific application, the machine is equipped with a rotary table
with direct drive, diameter 2,200 mm and 200 rpm max. The rotary table is used for turning and
positioning. A second CNC rotary table with counter-bearing for undulated workparts and a
pick-up magazine for lathe tools up to a length of 1,000 mm complete the machine.
A glance at the development of Schwienbacher Maschinenbau GmbH quickly reveals
Erika Schwienbacher’s great entrepreneurial skills. After the fatal accident of her husband
in 1970, today’s senior managing director took over the responsibility for the
mechanical engineering company. The fruits of her labour, which include building a new
plant in 1974, are remarkable.
For the last 20 years her son Reinhard has been at her side, managing the company
with 14 employees, practising order-related mechanical engineering with the whole
works: »Right from the first idea we bring in our know-how, if necessary we cooperate
with engineering offices and supply complete machine solutions delivery free. We start
with the procurement of material, followed by the cutting to size. We attend to everything
mechanic like welding or milling, and take care of hydraulics and pneumatics, and
of course of the assembly. The customer does not even need to care about the logistics.«
Pushing technology
In the middle of the eighties, after having successfully passed high-school, military service
and three years of training on the job in mechanical application, Reinhard Schwienbacher
finally grew into the duties and responsibilities of managing the company. Under
his aegis the radial boring mills were by and by replaced by state-of-the art milling
machines. The Schwienbacher GmbH had at that time developed from a repair shop for
trucks to an expert for material ropeways, utilized in the construction of barrier lakes in
the high mountains of Northern Italy. The core competence was the manufacturing of
rope rolls for circular gondolas. 90 percent of the orders were placed by the cableway
sector.
The milling machines were accordingly dimensioned for the powerful milling of geometrically
complex, medium-sized to large components of structural, heat-treated steels. The
first milling machine of Italian origin did not even have a tool changer, but its traveling
paths of more than 4 m brought the company a unique position within a radius of 200
km. »So we could keep out of the feud, predominating in the section of 600 mm centers«,
Schwienbacher states.
Finally, the commissioned production of machines for the manufacturing of concrete
reeinforcing bars, helped to navigate the company into calmer waters. Two more ramtype
milling machines with traveling paths of 2 and 6 m were purchased.
Industrial
Our customers
Schwienbacher in Lana/South Tyrol renowned for unadulterated mechanical engineering
Unique technology brings success
Her husband’s sudden death forced Erika Schwienbacher to take charge
of the mechanical engineering company, her husband had founded. She
excelled in this task with courage and visions. For her son Reinhard stateof-the-art
technology is the foundation for the third generation.
Horizontal, vertical and universal
CEO Reinhard Schwienbacher explains the demanding
manufacture of rope clips used on gondola ropeways:
this security-relevant part is completely machined on the
matec-40 HVU
In order to cope with future demands regarding the machining of components with
a length of up to 4 m, a matec 4+2-axis traveling column machining center was purchased
at the end of 2009. Such a machine was unique in the Italian market. The
matec-40 HVU was to substitute a 15 year-old machine with a traveling path of 2 m,
a capacity of 20 tools, and a spindle speed of 2,700 min-1 . »This machine was no
longer working to capacity«, Schwienbacher explains. »The specifications of the parts
called for more speed, inner coolant supply for state-of-the-art tools, and more axes.
On the old machine the machining could only be done uneconomically in multiple
clampings.«
The purchase of the matec-40 HVU was preceded by a market research of more than
one year. The core requirements were simple: traveling paths in X of 3 to 4 m, chip-tochip-time
below 10 s, 5-axis simultaneous machining. The concepts of various machine
builders all had the same disadvantage: »The milling head was solely equipped with a
B-axis, necessitating a rotary table for 5-axis machining, which in turn limited the
dimensions of the parts. In addition, I wanted to machine frontally, and here again the
machine concept was limiting.«
No problem, we can do it
Confronted with the conceptual formulation, matec representative in Italy, Lamberto
Giacometti, made a phone call to Erich Unger, CEO of matec Maschinenbau and
discussed the machining task. From the comprehensive matec modular system a 40-HV
machine was chosen as a solid basis, which is equipped with a B-axis swivel head as
a standard. Instead of that, a universal-milling head with A- and B-axis was adapted.
For lack of a standard spindle solution, basic engineering work had to be applied: a
Kessler state-of-the-art 45°motor spindle was flanged onto a rotary table, which in turn
was mounted on the Z-axis. The result was a solid, rigid universal milling head, continuously
swiveling in both axes simultaneously. The axes optionally have a hydraulic
disconnection via M-mode.
Erich Unger explains the matec concept: »Compared to customary ram-type solutions
with either a 2-axis swivel head or a 45° swivel head with Hirth serration, our advantages
are tremendous: we have a higher accuracy and stability along the traveling
path of the Z-axis. The ram-type solution has an inherent inaccuracy in the axe, if the
traveling path exceeds 1,000 mm. The control cannot completely compensate this
inaccuracy. We offer a high-class CNC motor spindle for simultaneous 5-axis-machining.
On top we achieve higher speed, even in continuous operation, plus, our universal
milling head operates space-savingly in the working area.«

sectors + applications
in different industrial sectors and all over the world
Impressed and thrilled
In the meantime Schwienbacher’s prototype machine concept has been continuously
improved. Meanwhile matec has built HVU machines with 1,800 mm in Z and
1,400 mm in Y, but »the basic rigidity of the machine can even do more than that«,
Erich Unger assures.
The well-proven tool changer with taper HSK 100, optionally available in the matec
modular system, could not produce the demanded chip-to-chip-time, but a revised telescopic
shuttle brought the necessary improvement. The cable drag chain alongside the
milling head has disappeared for good. Erich Unger: »We finally disposed of the projecting
edge for the energy supply by means of a centrically integrated cable conduit.
Now the machine can also be operated in vertical direction.«
Schwienbacher finally got his desired machine at the end of 2009 and in quite the
same unconventional way, as he had placed the order a couple of months earlier.
»On word of honor«, Schwienbacher says, he had bought the machine, although up
to then he had not seen much more than the 3 D design of the universal milling head.
The first encounter with his machine happened at the EMO in Milan, Italy, where the
matec-40 HVU was exhibited, busily producing chips. Schwienbacher: »I was totally
overwhelmed, when I first got sight of my machine. A gigantic milling head and loads
of technology – the machine has fulfilled my expectations up to this very day. A visit to
Köngen had given me the necessary confidence in my decision. The projects I saw
there - for example a 9-axis solution for a renowned manufacturer of glass scale tracks
- have demonstrated, that matec is very much at home in mechanical engineering.
Solid mechanical engineering, just like we perform it in our company. A company, the
size of matec, can turn good standard solutions into even better individual concepts.
Larger companies have a hard time doing that.«
Reinhard Schwienbacher describes the after-sales service and the technical support,
which are delivered directly from matec in Köngen, as exemplary. »The start-up of such
a highly complex machine could easily have turned out to be much more problematic«,
he says. »Whenever there were any questions, they were answered professionally
and quickly on the phone. The expected effect was reached sustainably: We machine
complex parts more efficiently and more precisely than with any other machine in our
production. The pig in the poke has proven to be a hit. The machine brings us a precious
technological pole position for the time being.«
The unshortened version of this article was published in Werkstatt + Betrieb, Ed. 9/2010
Author: Helmut Damm
Unique technology across South Tyrol and beyond: Schwienbacher puts an emphasis
on state-of -the-art machinery. The 4+2-axes matec-40 HVU is currently the optimum
solution. A good team all along the way (from the left): Christoph and
Reinhard Schwienbacher, Lamberto Giacometti and Erich Unger
Technologically flexible: the matec-40 HVU allows the machining of parts with a
length of up to 4 m on 4 sides; the machine is equipped with an integrated rotary
table for 5-axis simultaneous machining of short parts in one clamping
The traveling column series has been developed for single-part and series production.
Whether used for twin-table machining with rotary table or tail stock, multiple clamping
or single-part manufacturing of voluminous parts, this machine group covers
nearly all fields of application. Stability, precision and high speed are characteristics
of these machines.
Outstanding features of the traveling column series are long traverse paths, horizontally
and vertically swiveling machine spindles, easy mounting of clamping units as
well as automatic loading by means of external loading systems. A swivel head for
horizontal and vertical machining on 5 sides and 3D characterizes the HV machines.
The machines are available in a variety of configurations.
Turning and milling in one machine
Each HV machine can be turned into a milling/turning center for series production.
If work parts are best manufactured by complete machining this can be done in max.
two clampings. The swivel head provides for five-side machining during drilling and
milling processes and during the turning process it allows the application of multifunctional
lathe tools in all angles.
