5. Financial/Economic<br />

• Keeping a person from working<br />

• Controlling someone’s money or the household/family money<br />

• Withholding money<br />

• Spending money on himself (often on alcohol or drugs) or/and on other women<br />

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE ABUSER<br />

The following are some general characteristics of abusers:<br />

• Anger, suspicion, moodiness, tension, resentment, hypersensitivity<br />

• Helplessness, fear, inadequacy, insecurity<br />

• Low self-esteem, loser mentality<br />

• Exaggerated jealousy<br />

• Inability to cope with being alone<br />

• Jekyll & Hyde personality<br />

• Projects blame and responsibility for his actions on partner and others, refuses accountability,<br />

downplays the seriousness of his own violence<br />

• Drug or alcohol abuse (note: this does not cause violence, it only exacerbates it, see myth #5)<br />

• Believes in traditional gender roles and sex stereotypes<br />

• Extremely controlling and possessive, often manufactures power struggles to prove virility<br />

• Unable to handle stress (may be job related)<br />

• Often charming and endearing to manipulate others<br />

• Frequently uses sex as an act of aggression and to enhance self-esteem, believes in legitimized<br />

rape<br />

• Feels victimized by partner and society, does not believe his violent acts should incur negative<br />

consequences for him<br />

• Pushes for quick escalation of the relationship<br />

• Unrealistically demanding (“If you love me...”)<br />

• Aims to be the center of the partner’s world by isolating them from others and badgering them<br />

into letting go of the family and friends who would be a support network<br />

• Blames uncontrollable urges and partner for his own violent tendencies and feelings<br />

• Cruel to children and animals, frequently sadistic<br />
