The nuisance of signs in
the public right-of-way was
discussed at the Rossford
City Council April 8 meeting.
Councilman Jerry
Staczek said he is concerned
with numerous signs being
placed along Crossroads
Parkway.
He has noticed as many as
30 in past weeks, but lately
there have been only three or
four at a time.
“Not everyone is following
the sign ordinance,”
Councilman Staczek said.
Most recently were signs
around town advertising
employment opportunities at
FedEx, he said.
The councilman said he
has been removing the signs
himself and leaving them at
the police station.
Law Director Kevin
Heban advised that council
members and the mayor
should not be removing
signs, but allow police officers
to take that action.
“Chief [Glenn] Goss will
have the officers pick up the
signs,” Mr. Heban added,
Two new storage buildings
will soon be constructed
on the campus of Penta
Career Center.
At the April 10 meeting,
the school board agreed to
advertise for bids on cold
storage buildings.
The first structure, a 60 by
75 foot addition to the land
lab storage facility, will cost
an estimated $165,240,
explained board member
Mark Schoenlein, a member
of the buildings and grounds
committee.
The building, which will
house landscape and other
equipment, will be constructed
to match the existing one.
“It will be more of a pole
barn,”explained Superintendent
Ron Matter.
The second structure, at 35
by 150 square feet, will be
located at the south wing and
will be equipped with electricity.
The district estimates the
construction costs at
$255,150. “And the facade
will match our [career center]
building,” said the superintendent.
Bids for both buildings
will be opened on May 3.
Personnel Contracts
The board renewed
employment contracts with
the following certified staff:
Five-year contracts– Trava
Bieszczad, Eric Nelson,
Grace Philips and Kelly
Strahm;
Four-year contracts–
Anthony Klever, Michael
Knitz, Brad Odenweller,
Mary Rettig, Kay-Lynne
Schaller, Tara Schenkenberger
and Leslie Zilba, and
suggesting that elected officials
could notify the police
department if they see illegal
signs.
City Administrator Ed
Ciecka said he spoke to
FedEx about the signs.
Councilman Staczek said
he is frustrated with businesses
that repeatedly break
the signage law, and he
would like to see stricter
enforcement.
Options for facilities being narrowed to five
Public to decide: new or renovated schools
By Beth Church
The steering committee
planning for Rossford
school facilities is looking to
narrow the options to
five–and then ask residents
to help them rank those
choices.
The Rossford Board of
Education has approved a
contract with the
Collaborative/TMP for
phase three master planning
services, at a cost of
$62,000.
John Appt of the steering
committee said the architect
currently is creating 18
options for school facilities.
“These will include different
locations, new, renovated
and a combination of
buildings,” he explained.
Last month, the steering
committee created a list of
requirements that the
options should address:
•Operational savings and
fiscally responsible
•Future learning/collaborative
spaces/adaptability
•Location
•Safety and security
•Technology
•Township inclusion/
treated as one district
•Handicap accessibility
•Plan for future if building
removed from a location,
as well as site expandability/adaptability
•Shared services
•Better separation of
pedestrian/vehicle traffic
•Elimination of portables
and out-buildings
•Demographic consideration
for school placement
•Grade consolidation at
elementary level
•Centralize building support
services
•Coordination of tradesrelated
educational activities
•Historical significance
•Energy independence/
alternative energy.
The steering committee
will meet at 9 a.m.,
Saturday, May 4, to review
the 18 options, which will
include costs, Mr. Appt said.
“From there, we’ll narrow
it down to what we feel
are the top five options,” he
said.
Those five options will
be presented at a May 15
public forum.
Also, another survey of
school district residents will
be conducted in May, asking
voters to rank the options.
“Hopefully we’ll have
one come out on top,” Mr.
Appt said. “By the end of
May, we should select the
best.”
Two public input meetings
also will be held during
the week of May 20 to allow
in-depth discussions on the
residents’ opinions of the
five.
Based on public input,
the steering committee’s top
recommendation will be presented
to the school board at
a June 10 meeting.
Survey Results Split on
New or Renovated
A majority opinion on
future school buildings is
not evident in results from a
survey of district residents
conducted by the steering
committee earlier this year.
“It was pretty split on
new or renovated–it could
go either way,” Mr. Appt
said.
There were 489 responses
to the postcard survey that
asked eight questions.
Sixty-eight percent of
respondents said they prefer
neighborhood schools–
compared to 32 percent who
support a central campus.
However, when asked
about a central campus, 53
percent prefer two campuses
and 47 percent would like
one campus.
When residents were
questioned about whether
school buildings in the center
of town should remain
there:
•62 percent strongly
agree,
•13 percent agree,
•13 percent disagree, and
•12 percent strongly disagree.
“Overall, we noticed that
two responses seemed
weighted–that people favor
neighborhood schools and
they want to leave the downtown
campus as a downtown
campus,” Mr. Appt said.
The survey also asked
residents’ opinions on
whether to renovate, rebuild
or leave as is each of the five
classroom buildings.
For most buildings, only
about one-third of respondents
support construction
of new buildings.
Glenwood
Renovate: 46 percent
New building: 38 percent
Leave as is: 15 percent
Indian Hills
Renovate: 44 percent
New building: 34 percent
Leave as is: 22 percent
Eagle Point
Renovate: 54 percent
New building: 30 percent
Leave as is: 16 percent
Junior High
Leave as is: 16 percent
High School
Renovate: 48 percent
New building: 41 percent
Leave as is: 12 percent
The survey also asked
about a levy to fund renovation
or new construction, but
again there was no clear
majority among respondents.
When asked about a levy
for renovation of existing
buildings:
•32 percent strongly
agree,
•28 percent agree,
•12 percent disagree, and
•27 percent strongly disagree.
When asked about a levy
for new construction:
•32 percent strongly
agree,
•17 percent agree,
•14 percent disagree, and
•36 percent strongly disagree.
The final question asked
respondents if they support
no additional levy, and:
•44 percent strongly
agree,
•35 percent agree,
•11 percent disagree, and
•9 percent strongly disagree.
Mr. Appt said the steering
committee was pleased at
the number of responses to
the survey.
“The response rate was
really great,” he said.
“Usually it’s 1 or 2 percent
and we had almost 10 percent
back. We thought it
showed that people are interested.”
ODOT District Two Deputy Director Todd Audet discusses
regional road construction projects on tap for this
summer.
By Jane Maiolo
Area residents wondering
what detours to expect
this summer found out on
April 10, when the Ohio
Department of Transportation
District Two
announced its road construction
project plans for
this summer.
Todd Audet, ODOT district
two deputy director,
discussed what is in store
for northwest Ohio drivers
during a special meeting in
Perrysburg.
The theme for this
year ’s construction is
“Keeping Ohio’s Economy
Moving,” and toward that
end, Mr. Audet said the
press conference was held
at the Town Center at Levis
Commons due to its proximity
to a big project.
“One of the major areas
of work that will impact
traffic this year in district
two is a project that will
add a turn lane from northbound
State Route 25 to
eastbound I-475. At peak
travel times, many of you
are familiar with the congestion.
The ramp from northbound
Route 25 to eastbound
I-475 will be closed
from Friday at 7 p.m. to
Monday at 5 a.m. The project
will be complete in
August at a cost of
$333,000.
ODOT also will be
resurfacing Route 25 from
Front to East South Boundary
streets. The resurfacing
includes the U.S. Route 20
and Route 25 intersection.
The work will be complete
in December at a cost of
$500,000.
Mr. Audet said
statewide, ODOT is
launching one of its largest
construction seasons with
projects totaling $2.3 billion.
ODOT will begin or
continue construction of
nearly 1,000 projects
ODOT will spend more
than $170 million.
Mr. Audet said the
aggressive construction
season can be attributed to
House Bill 51, which
allows the state to leverage
the Ohio Turnpike, and use
the revenue toward infrastructure
improvements
statewide. He noted that
90 percent of the funds
raised will be used within
75 miles of the turnpike.
He explained that leveraging
the turnpike has
helped make up for funds
the state has been losing
through gas taxes. More
energy efficient vehicles
and fewer people traveling
has led to a decline in gas
tax revenue over the past
few years, he added.
Mr. Audet said that in
addition to construction
projects, Ohio motorists
will see another change
beginning July 1. “Ohio
joins 34 states in increasing
the speed limit on rural
interstates to 70 miles per
hour, he said, adding,
“Urban and congested
areas will remain 65 mph.”
ODOT officials reminded
the traveling public to
remain cautious on the
state’s highways this summer.
“Please obey the
speed limit when driving
through orange barrel construction
zones,” said
Theresa Pollick of the district
two communications
office.
“The top three causes of
work zone crashes are following
too close, failure to
control and improper lane
change–all of which can be
prevented by safe driving,”
she added.
She referred to ODOT’s
Web site www.ohgo.com
for the latest road conditions
and details on highway
construction projects.
Drug take-back collection
at two locations April 27
Area residents are invited
to turn in their unused or expired
medications at a drug
“take-back” day on Saturday,
April 27.
The Rossford Police Department
and the Perrysburg
Township Police and Fire Departments
will assist the Drug
Enforcement Administration
with the collection.
Locally, collections will
be held at Walgreen’s, 10003
Fremont Pike, and the Rossford
Police Department, 99
Hillsdale Avenue, from 10
a.m. to 2 p.m.
The service is free and
anonymous, and no questions
will be asked.
Local residents are encouraged
to empty their medicine
cabinets, bedside tables
and kitchen drawers of unwanted,
unused and expired
prescription drugs.
Last fall, the DEA’s state
and local law enforcement
partners, working at more
than 5,263 locations, collected
488,395 pounds (244
tons) of medications from the
public.
In the five years of Take
Back events, they have collected
more than 2 million
pounds–1,018 tons– of pills.
The nationwide prescription
drug take-back initiative
seeks to prevent increased
pill abuse and theft by collecting
potentially dangerous
expired, unused and unwanted
prescription drugs for
destruction at sites nationwide.
Many Americans do not
know how to properly dispose
of their unused medicine,
often flushing them
down the toilet or throwing
them away–both potential
safety and health hazards.
According to the 2011
A man was apprehended
last Friday in Norwalk, two
days after he allegedly
robbed the Rossford Rite
Aid pharmacy.
Norwalk police arrested
Cody J. Devor, 28, of Mount
Blanchard, Ohio, inside the
Premiere Theater 8 on State
Route 250 where he appeared
to be sleeping, police
said.
Rossford Chief Glenn
Goss said the pharmacy robbery
took place at 3:45 p.m.,
Wednesday, April 10– moments
after a false call about
a robbery at a gas station on
Buck Road.
At 3:35 p.m., police received
a call reporting two
men entering the Shell/True
North station, wearing rain
gear with hoods over their
heads, and one was carrying
a shotgun.
However, when officers
arrived, there were no such
subjects in the area, Chief
Goss said.
“The store clerk confirmed
that no one matching
the description was in or
near the store,” he added.
Meanwhile, another call
came in at 3:45 p.m. reporting
that a robbery had just
occurred at Rite Aid, 801
Dixie Highway.
Chief Goss said a white
male with dark hair and
beard, wearing a leather
coat, ball cap, gloves with
velcro, and mirrored sun
glasses reportedly was “demanding
pills and threatening
to kill employees with a
gun” before he fled out the
rear of the store.
On Friday, April 12, the
department was notified by
Norwalk police that the suspect
was spotted in their
town, about 55 miles east of
Rossford.
Detective Sergeant Todd
Kitzler and Chief Goss went
to Norwalk to gather more
evidence of the crime committed
in their jurisdiction.
A search warrant was obtained
by officers who said
they were able to recover evidence
related to the Rite Aid
robbery.
Warrants for the arrest of
Mr. Devor were issued
Monday on at least one
charge of aggravated robbery
with a deadly weapon,
a first-degree felony, the
chief said.
Mr. Devor was taken into
custody and held in Huron
County jail until an extradition
hearing Monday on outstanding
felony charges from
the Hancock County sheriff’s
office.
Rossford police also have
an outstanding warrant for
Mr. Devor’s arrest from an
unrelated theft case, he
added.
Chief Goss said distributing
photographs of the robbery
suspect through the
news media and social
media proved to be successful
as tipsters called in with
The chief also said officers
canvassed downtown
Rossford businesses with information
about the robbery
and discovered that Mr.
Devor allegedly had committed
a theft offense at the
Stop-n-Shop convenience
store, across the street from
Rite Aid, the night before the
robbery.
fields may pose a disease risk
to children, adults and other
pets.
Scooping your pooch’s
poop isn’t just a courtesy for
those walking behind you;
it’s the healthy and environmentally
sound thing to do.
People may not pick up
after their dog because they
think it’s gross or they’re not
sure how to dispose of the
waste, but picking up after
your dog is easy, and it’s the
law.
Here are some easy steps
for dealing with your pet’s
waste:
•Always carry a plastic
bag when you walk your dog.
Reusing an old newspaper
delivery bag or plastic grocery
bag works well. To
avoid unpleasant surprises,
check the bag for holes before
your pet’s walk.
•Use the bag as a glove to
pick up the pet waste. Turn
the bag inside out around the
waste; scoop it up, seal the
bag and dispose of it in a
trash can.
•Don’t place bagged or
un-bagged pet waste in a
storm drain or hose pet waste
towards the street.
•Don’t compost pet waste.
Compost piles may not get
hot enough to kill diseasecausing
organisms.
•Remove waste from
areas where children play or
you garden.
•Wash your hands with
warm, soapy water after
dealing with pet waste.
Students conduct experiments to test laws of motion
Second grade students at All Saints Catholic School are exploring the laws of motion
with experiment centers. Each team planned and constructed roller coasters, race tracks,
domino challenges and more. Through trial and error, the teams studied their outcomes
and revised their plans to achieve success. A local engineer met with the students to
give them an overview of the variety of engineers and career opportunities. The second
graders also are competing in the Imagine Engineering Coloring Contest sponsored by
All Saints students learn about native plants
from Wood County Parks District program
Good things will be sprouting soon in the first grade classroom at All Saints Catholic
School. The class recently met with specialists from the Wood County Parks District to
learn more about native plants in Ohio and how to plant seeds. With the help of the specialists,
the students planted marigolds, tomatoes, peas, beets and green bean seeds.
After caring for the seedlings, the students will transplant them to the All Saints Franciscan
garden on the parish campus. Their activity combined science (the life cycle), religion
(creation) and social studies (community helpers). Produce from the garden will be
used for the All Saints food pantry.
