Dear members<br />

of our <strong>community</strong>,<br />

We are nearing the end of another<br />

successful year of continuous improvements<br />

at <strong>Howick</strong> <strong>College</strong> and I would like to share<br />

some of the progress we have made over<br />

the past three years.<br />

The following information details some of our<br />

achievements we are most proud of, supported<br />

by comments made by the Education Review<br />

Office during their recent audit of our school.<br />

We are very pleased with the progress achieved to date and will continue<br />

to work hard to ensure we support young people be the best they can be.<br />

Our aim is to develop well rounded young people who are fully equipped<br />

for life’s challenges, now and in the future.<br />

Thank you for your support during our transformation, we have really<br />

appreciated it. Our primary focus continues to be based around allround<br />

excellence as we strive to be the school of first choice for our<br />

local <strong>community</strong>. We are committed to making <strong>Howick</strong> <strong>College</strong> the<br />

best school it can be and we look forward to your continuous support.<br />

that have an impact on student learning<br />

• Teachers, through the effective leadership of the principal and<br />

senior leaders, provide increasingly innovative programmes and<br />

are promoting academic excellence throughout the school.<br />

• The school’s broad curriculum caters for students’ diverse<br />

strengths, interests, abilities and needs.<br />

• Students are very well supported to succeed in a variety of<br />

academic and vocational pathways and in co-curricular activities.<br />

• There have been significant improvements in all areas of<br />

the school since the 2010 ERO review. School leaders are<br />

committed to building a culture of learning and achievement.<br />

• The board of trustees ensures that students are the central<br />

focus of the school’s strategic thinking and planning.<br />

• Trustees promote meaningful partnerships with their parent<br />

<strong>community</strong>.<br />

How well are students learning —<br />

engaging, progressing and achieving<br />

• Students at <strong>Howick</strong> <strong>College</strong> are very well supported to engage<br />

in learning, make good progress and achieve.<br />

• Since the 2010 review, improving student achievement<br />

throughout the school has been a key priority.<br />

• There have been notable increases in NCEA achievement<br />

levels. Level 1, 2 and 3 exceed national averages.<br />

• Increased numbers of students gaining Merit and Excellence<br />

endorsements and scholarships.<br />

How effectively does this school’s curriculum<br />

promote and support student learning<br />

• <strong>Howick</strong> <strong>College</strong>’s curriculum is deliberately and thoughtfully<br />

designed to cater for students’ diverse interests, strengths,<br />

talents and abilities.<br />

• ICT is increasingly used to assist student learning.<br />

• The principal provides strong professional leadership. He<br />

works in partnership with capable school leaders to promote<br />

a culture of learning throughout the school.<br />

• Students are well engaged in learning and are valued as<br />

active participants in the learning process. They are provided<br />

with high levels of challenge and opportunities for critical<br />

thinking and problem solving.<br />

• Students‘ personal characteristics are valued equally with<br />

academic progress and achievement.<br />

How well placed is the school to sustain<br />

and improve its performance<br />

• <strong>Howick</strong> <strong>College</strong> is very well placed to sustain and continue to<br />

improve.<br />

• The principal and school leaders are effectively managing<br />

change and transforming the school’s learning culture.<br />

• Teachers’ strengths are valued and as a result, students are<br />

benefiting from committed and capable teaching teams.<br />
