digital media Photo Illustrations: EAC Faculty Member Randee Ladden MEDIA MANIPULATION 7031 12 wEEKS WEB studio Jeremiah Ketner Monday 9:30am – 12:30pm Location: 3rd Floor Digital Media Lab Demystify the web! Learn what makes it tick! If you’re an artist or crafts person with a desire to show your work online, or if you have a site you’d like to update, this multi-level Web Studio is the class for you. Learn the basics of web design or develop your existing project with advanced skills. The choice is yours! At the end of the class, each student will have a working website at a fraction of the cost of getting it done professionally and have the experience necessary to learn how to update and improve the site in the future. Syllabus includes: basic html coding, digital imaging and Dreamweaver training. Advanced topics covered include cascading style sheets, JavaScript, and templates. Photoshop and other applicable software will be discussed and applied. Basic computer skills required. If you are looking to expand your web design skills or have an unfinished web project, then this is the lcass for you. Evanston resident $345/non-resident 355 Class size limit 8 7040 10 WEEKS Design Principles for Desktop Publishing Kathe Stoepel Thursday 1 – 4pm Location: 3rd Floor Digital Media Lab This course teaches you how to combine the electronic capabilities of InDesign with established principles of design and layout. Topics include using a grid, typography, white space, paper and ink selection, planning for multi-page documents, and using spot color. Experience with InDesign is helpful but not required. Evanston resident $275/non-resident $285 Class size limit 6 7245 12 WEEKS PHOTOGRAPHY AND GALLERY VISITS FOR INSPIRATION Casey Smallwood Friday 3pm – 6 pm Location: Chicago Galleries and 3 Floor Digital Media Lab In this class students will meet at various galleries throughout the Chicago area (River West, River North, Pilsen and West Loop). We will spend about an hour visiting one or two galleries and then spend the remainder of the time shooting in the respective neighborhood in response to the work viewed. This class will convene at EAC during the final two weeks of the session to work with Photoshop’s Camere Raw feature on the images they produce in the previous weeks. The outcome will be a digital portfolio of imagery, ready for print and web use. drawing and Painting Membership is required for the following classes Drawing 0152 12 WEEKS Pastel Drawing Didier Nolet Monday 9:00am – 12:00pm Location: 2 North EAC Soft pastel is a unique medium that combines the qualities of drawing and painting, such that the dry pigments look like velvet catching the light. Learn to create pastels from nature, photographs or memories as you explore composition, color, light, shadows and perspective. No experience required. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 10 0167 12 WEEKS Basic Drawing Didier Nolet Monday 6:30 – 9:30 pm Location: 2 South EAC This is a class for students who are interested in learning the basic rules of art, which constitute drawing. Through different exercises, learn about composition, contrast, values, perspective, and more. Different mediums explored including charcoal, pencil and ink wash. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 14 0282 12 WEEKS STUDIO DRAWING: COMPOSITION/ SPACE/VALUE Michelle Kogan Wednesday 9:30am –12:30pm Location: 2 North EAC This class focuses on creating strong compositions, using positive and negative space and building a full range of values in your drawings. Begin working from still-life arrangements created by the instructor and the students. All levels welcome. Advanced students will work independently while receiving one-on-one critiques and beginning students will focus on drawing techniques including gesture, contour, organizational line and value studies. Develop observational skills and examine various drawing media, techniques and strategies of pictorial organization. We’ll work from still-life set-ups, landscape, and other sources. Students may choose to develop paintings already in progress to a more finished, resolved statement, or to address those challenging places in their work that have impeded forward movement. Skill development, use of materials, stylistic choices, personal imagery, and aesthetic content will be addressed as students find their visual voice. All levels welcome. Projects will have an historical context and are designed to help you improve your oil painting skills. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 8 0177 12 WEEKS BEGINNING OIL PAINTING Patrick Miceli Monday 7pm – 10 pm Location: 3rd Floor EAC For the beginner or those who have not painted in a while, this class covers the fundamental information necessary to be confident and successful in painting with oils. Working from a variety of subjects, including the still life, students learn the basics of laying out a palette, use of brushes, mixing colors and a variety of brush and palette knife techniques. The step-by-step approach taught in this class will also emphasize developing observational skills and an understanding of the importance of composition. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 12 0216 10 WEEKS SUMI-E Kay Thomas Tuesday 1pm –3:30pm 10 Weeks beginning September 13 Location: 2 North EAC Explore, Sumi-e, the ancient art of Japanese ink painting. Sumi-e means black ink painting, simple, elegant and serene. Discover the history of this contemplative art form and how to use the special painting tools. Paint subjects from nature using simple brush strokes. Individualized instructions for students at all levels. No previous painting experience needed. No class October 11. Evanston resident $200/non-resident $210 Class size limit 10 0102 12 WEEKS PAINTING FUNDAMENTALS WITH ACRYLICS Donna Lurie-Semmerling Tuesday 9:30am – 12:30pm Location: EAC 2 South This fundamentals class equips students with the tools and information necessary to paint with confidence. Starting with the basics of acrylics medium, we will learn to paint realistic subjects using still life arrangements and other references. Lessons covered include planning a composition, mixing colors, and creating illusions of space. In the winter, this class will progress to the next level up. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 12 0128 12 Weeks PAINTING STUDIO: FINDING YOUR VISUAL VOICE Janis Pozzi-Johnson Tuesday 6:30pm – 9:30pm Location: 3rd Floor EAC This class provides students the opportunity build upon the fundamentals of painting through working from observational studies and developing their own personal imagery and themes. The understanding and use of color and materials, skill development, surface quality, stylistic choices, and compositional design will be addressed as students find their visual voice. Some painting experience is recommended. Come prepared to work the first class with chosen materials. Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300 Class size limit 14 Pathway to Success “Drawing is the base of everything in fine arts, a commencement to a path to masterpieces. The logical sequel would be to follow the drawing class with a figure drawing or figure painting class, considering that to render the figure is a universal way to learn fundamental skills on a deeper level. For centuries, academies subscribed to this pathway. Eventually, focus on a medium such as acrylics or watercolors or oils. Round out your learning with a class focusing on creativity and self evaluation.” As suggested by long time faculty member David Gista, head of the EAC Painting and Drawing Studio. This is first in a series of pathways; look for more in upcoming catalogs. Classes without minimum enrollment are cancelled 3 days before first class. 9
