Contemporary art and practice are at the forefront of
discovery. As Barbara London, Video and Media Curator at
New York’s Museum of Modern Art points out, “Artists are
the harbingers in working with materials and technology
that keep updating faster than we can blurb.”
Fortunately, we have an exhibition committee that connects us with
what is current and insightful. These artists, gallerists, curators, and art
teachers who advise the Art Center on exhibitions, collection tours,
public programs and studio visits are well informed and connected with
the region’s emerging artists and the art world’s most recent trends.
In fall 2011 the Art Center will present an exhibition featuring the affinity
between art and fashion; a popular motif witnessed by Alexander
McQueen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Jean-Paul
Gaultier at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others.
In winter 2012 the Art Center will open “Crossing Wires” an exhibition
based on technology, featuring work that expands upon or pushes
against traditional definitions of art and investigates the relationship
between technology and play.
Not only do we exhibit the work of our time, we offer instruction by the
artists working in these 21 st Century disciplines at our Art School. This
fall we will begin to offer more in the area of new media with a remix
class and digital narrative production. And our new “Make Room” will be
a space in which fabric and thread reigns, where students can explore
contemporary dress, decoration and deconstruction.
There are many reasons to visit us at the Art Center. However, our mission
will not be fulfilled if all you do is look or listen, we also want you to learn
- about the artists, the world, and even yourself. To that end, we will be
working diligently to offer additional interpretive materials in our galleries
and on our web site. Audience engagement is at the very core of our
practice here at the Art Center and it has been for over eighty years.
I look forward to seeing you in our galleries and classrooms. Make art a
part of your life.
