Experiment! Try something new and learn to create
abstract, three-dimensional art forms by exploring
non-objective, organic and figurative themes.
Stoneware clay, plaster, winter stone and concrete
with fiberglass, along with found objects in metals
and glass are some of the mediums that may be
used. Slab and coil building techniques and armature
assembly will be explored as well as instruction in
plaster mold making. Some sculpture experience
recommended.
SCULPTURE: The figure
2576, 2578 12 WEEKS
FIGURE SCULPTURE
Sheila Oettinger and Barbara Goldsmith
2576 Monday 9:30am – 12:30pm
2578 Wednesday 9:30am – 12:30pm
Location: Figure Studio at Noyes
Students will sculpt in clay from live models. They
can work realistically or can use the model as
inspiration for more interpretative work. Instructors
will work with each student individually. Finished
projects are usually fired, but can be cast into
plaster or concrete as well. Students will learn how
to prepare work for firing, how to do simple waste
mold casting and also will be able to experiment
with various surface patinas to add color and texture
to their fired works. Students of all experience levels
are welcome.
PLASTER CASTING & FIGURATIVE
SCULPTURE
Shencheng Xu
Tuesday 7pm – 10pm
Location: Figure Studio at Noyes
Modeling in clay is one of the central methods
sculptors use for studying the figure. Because of
its additive and subtractive capabilities, clay is
an extremely forgiving and subtle medium, well
suited to the needs of beginning, intermediate, and
advanced students. Emphasis is on the figure with a
half hour of quick sketches (bring your sketchbook)
and 2 or 3 sessions will be on the same pose. The
goal of the class is to finish 3 or 4 fired terra cotta
pieces with the option to plaster cast. All levels of
experience welcome.
Evanston resident $305/non-resident $315
Class size limit 16, one model
human form. Instruction in armature building, mold
making, concrete and plaster casting and hollowing
techniques for stoneware firing will be given on an
individual basis. Models pose for several weeks to
allow maximum anatomical study.
SCULPTURE, DEPTHS, DEMENSIONS
Jill King
Thursday 9:30am – 12:30pm
Location: YFA South EAC
Bring your ideas to life by transforming them into
three-dimensional works of art. Learn to build
armatures and work in a variety of unconventional
materials such as wire, plaster, wax, gauze, non-toxic
adhesives, nature, fabrics, found materials, hardware
mediums and more. Students develop concepts for
their sculptures through maintaining a sketchbook
and joining in on class discussions. Students will have
the opportunity to view contemporary sculpture
through field trips and slide presentations.
Evanston resident $290/non-resident $300
