I
am thrilled to begin my tenure as President of the Board of Trustees
of the Evanston Art Center. Filling Harold Bauer’s shoes is a huge
undertaking, so I am pleased that he will be staying involved in
several committees, offering his talent and years of experience to
help with a smooth transition.
I see this transition as a testament to the enduring legacy that all of you
who love the Art Center have helped create. I will work hard to carry this
legacy into the Art Center’s future: to be a fiscally strong organization, full
of vitality and creativity while offering a wonderful selection of challenging,
engaging classes and timely, compelling artistic events to pique the interest
of all segments of our community.
Thank you to the Board for their confidence in my ability to lead the
Evanston Art Center, the staff for their dedication to the Art Center’s
mission, our terrific faculty and to you, the supporters, members, and
audience that breathe life into the Art Center every single day. I look
forward to getting to know you and sharing all the wonderful programs we
have to offer.
For those of you who do not know me, like many of you, I am a long-time
Evanston Art Center student. I began drawing classes in the early 1980’s.
I soon became enamored with clay and figurative sculpture and have
worked at the Noyes facility for more than 25 years. I have also enjoyed
classes in the metal sculpture studio for several years and have a longing to
return to that medium someday.
This latest issue of Concentrics and our website highlight the exciting
programs we offer. Please take your time to peruse our class offerings
and range of workshops. While some of you are just entering a lifelong
adventure in the visual arts, others are emerging artists in the public arena.
Really, there is something for everyone, whether the beginning student
or the professional artist. I hope that if you have yet to experience the
Evanston Art Center, you will indulge a talent or whim and join us this
session to experience some of our wonderful programs.
The Evanston art Center is a membership organization. We value our
place in this vibrant, thriving community as your gateway to the arts. We
firmly believe that the arts enrich our lives and our communities, allowing
us to share ideas, develop new perspectives and build new connections.
Participation is essential for the success of our rich programs, exhibits and
the organization itself. If you are an artist, artisan or donor, we welcome
your participation.
Thank you,
President, Board of Trustees
Mission
The Evanston Art Center, founded in 1929, is
dedicated to fostering the appreciation and
expression of the visual arts among the diverse
audiences of the North Shore and Greater
Chicago areas. The Evanston Art Center
achieves its mission through studio art classes,
exhibitions, outreach activities, educational
programs, and publications, all of which are
designed to engage and enrich the individual
and the community.
In carrying out this mission, the Evanston Art
Center strives to encourage lifelong learning
in the arts and to make the art of our time an
accessible and integral part of people’s lives.
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE EVANSTON ART
CENTER was a direct result of civic and cultural
leaders working together to realize the goal
of a community center where the arts could
be experienced, appreciated, discussed, and
practiced. Our Art Center has continued to
be a vital part of the community for over 80
years, serving artists, teachers, students of all
ages, curators, collectors and connoisseurs,
philanthropists, volunteers, work-study
students, schools, art galleries, cultural
institutions, and nonprofits. Our community
outreach and scholarship programs help us
reach underserved audiences. We continue
to offer our constituents new and meaningful
ways to engage in the arts. The Evanston
Art Center has always been connected to its
community roots and this bond will remain a
guiding force for the Art Center well into the
21st century.
donate today
We need your ongoing support if we are
to sustain our very important mission of
making the visual arts available to the various
communities we serve. We are happy to
accept large gifts and small. We can direct
your support to programs that speak to your
specific interests. We can help you enroll in the
Alice Riley Society, which will help us grow our
endowment and sustain our future. We urge
you to make a tax-deductible contribution
today. Thank you.
Pathway to Success
“Drawing is the base of everything in fine arts, a commencement to a path to masterpieces. The logical
sequel would be to follow the drawing class with a figure drawing or figure painting class, considering that
to render the figure is a universal way to learn fundamental skills on a deeper level. For centuries, academies
subscribed to this pathway. Eventually, focus on a medium such as acrylics or watercolors or oils. Round out
your learning with a class focusing on creativity and self evaluation.”
As suggested by long time faculty member David Gista, head of the EAC Painting and Drawing Studio. This is first in a series of
pathways; look for more in upcoming catalogs.
IN METAL CLAY
Katie Baum
Wednesday 9am –12pm
Location: Jewelry Studio at Noyes
Metal clays are at the forefront of metal jewelry
and sculpture technology, with all the ‘pizzazz’ and
beauty of ancient techniques but with the simplicity
and fun of simpler creation methods. We begin with
clay – malleable, smooth, and a true dimensional
blank slate. We then work the clay, employ various
hand tools and hand-forming techniques, dry our
pieces. No experience is required, though students
with experience may easily modify items to their skill
level. Please bring the low-fire silver clay formula of
your choice to the first class, or contact the instructor
to place any orders to be brought to class for you.
Thanks to our volunteers!
The EAC is always grateful for the hard work of our volunteers and interns. In May,
Drew Dickson and Shelby Marks, students at North Shore Country Day School,
assisted with the Spring Benefit as part of their Senior Service Project. Drew and
Shelby spent the last two weeks of their senior year preparing the EAC galleries
for the event, and assisted patrons during the benefit night.
Northwestern University junior Sasha Lipton spent her spring quarter interning at
the EAC through the School of Education and Social Policy’s practicum program.
She got hands-on experience with the day-to-day workings of a nonprofit,
especially through her assistance with the Spring Benefit, cataloguing artwork,
streamlining the bidding process, writing follow-up letters to donors, and
composing the program booklet.
Our Youth Job Center Intern- Thank you Johnathon!
The EAC wants to give a special thank you to Johnathan Watson for all of his help
over the last several months as our Graphic Arts and Business Administration
CUT: June 5 – August 7
Curated by Eleanor Spiess-Ferris and Beth Hart
Don’t miss the EAC’s newest exhibition, “CUT,” where the medium of paper is
transformed into contemporary artwork in the hands of thirteen talented artists.
Although the making of paper goes back to at least the 3rd century, the oldest
surviving paper cut-out originated in 6th century China and has a long worldwide
tradition in art that dates at least to the Middle Ages. Traditional collage,
2- and 3-dimensional cut paper forms, digital technology of “cutting,” “pasting,”
and “replicating,” and dvd “action cartoons” of cut paper characters demonstrate
only some of the contemporary techniques featured in “CUT.” Every artist in the
exhibition uses the technique of cutting as a starting point to achieve his or her
unique artistic expression.
The exhibiting artists are: Brian Dettmer, Ling-An Fang, Susan Giles, Jesse
Harrod, Jang Soon Im, Bruce Kresnoff, Christophe Roberts, Mark Rospenda,
Shawn Sheehy, Richard Shipps, Helene Smith-Romer, Doug Stapleton, and Sarah
Steinwachs.
Several special workshops in conjunction with this exhibition will be held this
summer, taught by the exhibiting artists: one titled “Fabric as Paint” will be taught
by Jesse Harrod, and a second workshop called “The Language of Pop-Up Books”
will be taught by Shawn Sheehy.
A related community-wide event, “Re-Create: Recycled Paper Environment,” will
be held on July 30 from 11 am to 4 pm at the picnic shelter in the park north of
the Art Center. This event is free and open to the public.
Member’s Show:”Interpretation in Two or Three-D”
The Art Center has asked a group of Chicago-based artists and designers who are
at the forefront of their disciplines to collaborate on an exhibition exploring the
relationship between art and fashion.
A reflection of today’s global culture, the line between both disciplines has
increasingly blurred to produce hybrid art forms that bridge the worlds of culture
and commerce.
Dimensional Lines: Art + Dress will explore this cultural phenomenon in the
context of Chicago’s own vibrant contemporary art and fashion scenes. This
exhibition will offer visitors a rare opportunity to experience innovative art and
design in dialogue with the Art Center’s historic setting.
Sculpture on the Grounds
Our 2011-2012 Sculpture on the Grounds project, “Elevated,” conceptually
addresses the provocative dialogue between nature and built space that the
Evanston Art Center’s ivy-covered building has with Lake Michigan. Visually,
with its girder-like supports and elevated mass, the work powerfully references
Chicagoland’s most iconic built structures, the “El.” “Elevated” consists of a
series of parallel, attached hoops that will have a central core of bundled reeds
zigzagging through the length of the structure. The reeds are enclosed and
sheltered within the sculptural form and simultaneously extend beyond the
frame. The piece as a whole implies rapid movement, as if captured in a blurred
Contemporary art and practice are at the forefront of
discovery. As Barbara London, Video and Media Curator at
New York’s Museum of Modern Art points out, “Artists are
the harbingers in working with materials and technology
that keep updating faster than we can blurb.”
Fortunately, we have an exhibition committee that connects us with
what is current and insightful. These artists, gallerists, curators, and art
teachers who advise the Art Center on exhibitions, collection tours,
public programs and studio visits are well informed and connected with
the region’s emerging artists and the art world’s most recent trends.
In fall 2011 the Art Center will present an exhibition featuring the affinity
between art and fashion; a popular motif witnessed by Alexander
McQueen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and Jean-Paul
Gaultier at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, among others.
In winter 2012 the Art Center will open “Crossing Wires” an exhibition
based on technology, featuring work that expands upon or pushes
against traditional definitions of art and investigates the relationship
between technology and play.
Not only do we exhibit the work of our time, we offer instruction by the
artists working in these 21 st Century disciplines at our Art School. This
fall we will begin to offer more in the area of new media with a remix
class and digital narrative production. And our new “Make Room” will be
a space in which fabric and thread reigns, where students can explore
contemporary dress, decoration and deconstruction.
There are many reasons to visit us at the Art Center. However, our mission
will not be fulfilled if all you do is look or listen, we also want you to learn
- about the artists, the world, and even yourself. To that end, we will be
working diligently to offer additional interpretive materials in our galleries
and on our web site. Audience engagement is at the very core of our
practice here at the Art Center and it has been for over eighty years.
I look forward to seeing you in our galleries and classrooms. Make art a
part of your life.
