FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Members of the Academy community,
“Habemus Papam” – “We have a Pope” and so the words
rang out across St Peter’s Square.
In the short time since the announcement I am sure that
many of you, like myself, have rejoiced in the election of
Pope Francis who has demonstrated through his initial
words and actions that this crucial Papacy will be one like no
other, one that has the potential to make a significant
difference in our world and change the minds and hearts of
people.
As a Mercy community it was particularly inspirational to see
that the power of God’s Mercy was the central message of
Pope Francis as he celebrated Mass and the Angelus on
his first Sunday as Pope
“Mercy is the Lord’s most powerful message…….”
Let us keep Pope Francis in our prayers and ask the Lord to
give him the strength and courage he needs to change the
world.
As we come to the end of this short but very busy first term, I
take this opportunity to thank staff for all their efforts, parents
for their support and students for their wonderful spirit of
cooperation. I believe that it has been a very happy term
and everyone seems very settled.
The Year 7s have fitted in extremely well and hopefully they
are feeling very much part of the College now.
The words of Pope Francis
The power of God’s mercy
“Mercy is the Lord’s most powerful message.”
“It is not easy to trust oneself to the mercy of
God, because His mercy is an unfathomable
abyss – but we must do it!”
God “has the ability to forget … He kisses you,
He embraces you, and He says to you”
‘neither do I condemn you. Go, and from
now, on, sin no more.’ Only that counsel does
He give you”
“We ask for the grace of never tiring of
asking pardon, for He never tires of
pardoning.”
“The face of God is that of a merciful father
who is always patient with us.”
Our recent College Assembly provided the opportunity to
acknowledge student achievements and to appreciate the
giftedness of our students. Congratulations to the six
students who were named Students of the Term. You can
be rightly proud of this achievement!
The Assembly also provided an avenue for the Senior
Student Leadership team to officially launch the Mercy
Values Project and also for the assembled gathering to
hear of some of the recent happenings at the College .
The last few weeks have seen the Year 12 Retreat; the visit by the Principal, staff and students of Nishiyama
High school in Kyoto; the Year 10 Colloquium planned and hosted so well by Year 11 students, Clare Martin
and Emily Rienks, as part of the Catholic Education week celebrations; the Amazing Feed the Hungry Dinner
organized by Ms Luscombe, Justice Coordinator, and the students of the Justice group; and the exciting and
enriching Year 8 City Cite experience.
The annual Classical Concert which took place last night was a very fitting way to finish the term. The
beautiful voices and magnificent music were enhanced by the superb acoustics of the Chapel
Congratulations to Ms Marsali Slocombe and all involved in the Concert.
Best wishes to Mr David Molino who will be on leave for the remainder of the year. We thank Mr Molino for
his enormous contribution to the College both as teacher and Level Coordinator and we look forward to his
return in 2014.
We also extend best wishes to Ms Mairead Kennedy as she finishes her Term 1 replacement position at the
College.
And so the term comes to a close – a busy, rewarding and enriching term for all………
I wish all families happy holidays and Happy Easter.
May the Easter Season be a time of peace, joy and special blessings for all.
Principal
Speech delivered by Mr Zeho Inaba, Principal of Nishiyama High School,
at the College Assembly in honour of the Nishiyama staff and students.
Mr Inaba delighted us by delivering his speech in English.
Good morning.
My name is Zeho Inaba.
I’m a priest and a principal of Kyoto Nishiyama High School.
Thank you for your having a hearty welcome for us.
You accepted our students willingly. Thank you.
12 students and 3 staff came here from far away, 10000km to make friends with
Academy students.
Now we feel the distance very far. But when we go back, we won’t feel it because
we’ll have become more friendly.
In Japan, it’s getting warmer day by day. In Australia it is the opposite.
In Japan we can’t see the Southern Cross.
There are many differences between Australia and Japan. But we think it
pleasant to experience the difference. Because we can assimilate another culture
and life.
We don’t refuse the difference but admit and accept it.
As a result, we can feel a wide and big world in our mind.
Through this partnership program, we hope our students will become women with
a cosmopolitan outlook and become peace-looking women.
Let’s enjoy our differences actively.
Thank you.
Missed Assessment Task (SAC) forms (Non Submission of Work Policy)
Please be aware that students submit the form to the Student Office before obtaining the parent signature,
not after. The process is:
On the day that your daughter returns to School, she fills in the front page of the ‘Notification Of
Missed Assessment Task (2012)’ form (obtained from the Student Office or Homeroom noticeboard)
and the student signs this form.
The student then submits the form to Missed Sac’s box in the Student Office tray by 3.30 pm. The
parent does not sign the form at this stage.
The form will be processed, signed by Mr. Fuller and returned to the student via the Homeroom Roll.
The form will indicate the day that the Supplementary SAC is to be completed.
Return the form, with a parent signature on the back page, to the Missed Sac’s box on or before
the day of the Supplementary SAC session.
Attend the Supplementary SAC session in E3.7 on the day specified on the form.
** Students must complete the SUPP SAC within 10 days of the original date of the Assessment Task.
A reminder that any student (Year 10, 11 or 12) undertaking a VCE Subject requires a Medical Certificate if
they are absent on the day of a SAC due to illness. In the case of absence due to family circumstances such
a funeral or serious illness of a family member, you are asked to contact Mr Fuller at the College on 9419
Interim Reports
The Term 1 interim reports will be prepared by teachers during the first week of term 2. Parents will be able to
access their daughter’s interim report on PAM from Friday April 19. The reports will be printed on April 19 and
will be distributed to the students during morning homeroom on Monday April 22. All parents are expected to
attend the Parent-Teacher sessions on Wednesday April 24 (2.10 – 8.30pm) for Year 7 – 9 students and
Thursday April 30 (2.10 – 8.30pm) for Year 10 - 12 students. It is preferable that the students also attend the
parent/teacher interviews.
General Ability Testing
The College has engaged the services of Ms Carmel Richardson to assist us to better understand and
respond to the many sources of academic data, such as NAPLAN and the VCAA reports on the VCE
examinations results. To support this work Ms Richardson has conducted ‘General Ability Tests’ for all
students in Years 8 – 11. The analysis of these tests is essential as our teachers look to evaluate our teaching
programs based on ‘data informed’ evidence.
Atherton Gardens Homework Club
The Atherton Gardens Homework Club has asked Academy to provide between student volunteers on ten
Wednesdays over the year. I encourage all students to consider volunteering one or more weeks of the
Homework Club Program. Involvement in the program is a lot of fun and very worthwhile. Interested students
can pick up an ‘application form’ from the student office.
VCAL Refugee Film Week Project
The VCAL Class is participating in a student short film project sponsored by the City of Yarra. As part of the
project, the VCAL class had a meeting with Q’Lali, an Afghani refugee who arrived in Australia two years ago.
His story was incredibly moving. As a member of the Hazara community, he and his family experienced
constant harassment and danger. His father was murdered. An uncle was murdered. A brother was injured in
a bomb attack. With the help of people smugglers he fled Afghanistan and made a perilous journey with night
time border crossings over mountains and through jungles. Six days at sea in an overcrowded and
unseaworthy vessel. Twelve months in a Darwin detention centre with the threat of deportation and the
psychologically damaging boredom and listlessness of internment.
Q’Lali is an intelligent and likeable man. He is a Muslim and as such he spoke to the class of his deep respect
for ‘the prophet Jesus’ and the values of mercy, peace and compassion. He spoke of his desire for education
in Australia so that he could work to provide support for his family.
The talk raised many challenges for the students. Our politicians speak of people smugglers as being nothing
but evil. Yet for Q’Lali, the smugglers provided food, shelter and his only means of escape to Australia! Q’Lali
has left his wife and children in Afghanistan! Was that morally wrong or is his journey to Australia the only way
that he can eventually work to free his family from danger Should asylum seekers who desperately want to
seek education and work to support families be locked up behind razor wire
This is an excellent project to be involved with and I thank Ms Trixie Pavey from the Fitzroy Learning Network
for arranging the visit for us.
I wish all members of the College community a well deserved break and a happy and holy Easter celebration.
DIRECTOR OF FAITH AND MISSION
Year 12 Reflection Days
On the 14 th and 15 th of March the Year 12’s headed to Amberley, Edmund Rice Centre. We began the day
with an introduction to what we would do over the next two days. Once we were settled we watched the
inspirational film ‘The Way’. The film covered the pilgrimage of a man walking the Camino de Santiago, after
the death of his son. The film provided us with an insight into what a real pilgrimage was like compared to our
pre conceived ideas. During the lunch break some of us adventured down to the river which seemed to be
kilometres below us but which was actually only a few hundred meters! The speech presented to us by
Michelle Goh about her journey to becoming a Sister of Mercy showed us how normal the transition was and
how it wasn’t about secluding yourself but opening yourself up to new experiences.
Day two was more about reflecting on our own journeys to Year 12. We spent the day involved in many
activities that allowed us to reflect on our faith journey and relationship with God, such as meditation, walking
a labyrinth, chatting to pilgrims, poetry workshop and journal writing. We also shared a picnic lunch which was
probably one of the main highlights. It was incredible how much we could eat! The service lead by Ms Fogarty
and students at the end of the day allowed each of us to light a candle, representing us lighting our paths for
the future. The sight of so many Academy girls in reflection and silence was extraordinary. We left our final
day at the retreat feeling enlightened, excited and very full!
1 st Annual Young Speakers Colloquium for Year 10 Students
On Thursday 14th of March, after attending the St. Patricks Day Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, three Yr.10
students, Victoria Waid, Tess Moody and I, Isabelle Danaher, represented the Academy at the 1st annual
Young Speakers Colloquium organised by the Catholic Education Office for the Archdiocese of Melbourne.
After being greeted by the friendly staff at the new Catholic Leadership
Centre in East Melbourne and provided with lunch, we were invited to have
a look at the Visual Arts Exhibition which featured artworks from Catholic
primary and secondary schools in Victoria. Academy girls Kirsten Chan (Yr
10), Anna Selzer (Yr 10) and Bella Sullivan-Barry (Yr 12) were among those
with featured artworks in the exhibition. Soon after that, the Speakers
Colloquium began and four, especially chosen, Catholic secondary students
hoted the event: two of the Academy’s own students, Emily Rienks and
Clare Martin (both in Yr.11) and two boys from Simonds College.
The focus of the Colloquium was ‘What Shapes your Identity’. The guest speakers were: North
Melbourne footballer Daniel Wells, Beijing Paralympic gold medal Basketballer Dylan Alcott, Brighid Feeney, a
volunteer with the Sudanese Australian Integrated Learning (SAIL) Program and the Auxiliary Bishop for the
Archdiocese of Melbourne, Bishop Vincent Long.
Each of the speakers gave us such empowering talks about the importance of staying
true to your own beliefs; helping out with marginalised societies; not holding back in
life and the importance of family, friends and faith in guiding our decision making. For
example, Daniel Wells said it was important to stay strong in what you believe in. He
spoke about his very strong commitment to his faith and how he always goes to
Sunday mass, no matter where he is or what he has on. He also told us that he
believes in not drinking alcohol and that his teammates always back him up whenever
anyone else chooses not to respect his beliefs. He said that this all played a part in his
personal identity - not only as a footballer with his teammates, but as a father and
loving husband to his wife and kids. In addition, Dylan Alcott, who spoke about
reaching his goals of competing at a Paralympics, encouraged all of us to ‘not hold back’ and to take every
opportunity as it comes along. As a special bonus, we all had a chance to hold Dylan’s silver medal that he
won at the London 2012 Paralympics.
Overall, all of us who attended this Young Speakers Colloquium agree that it was a great experience and we
have walked away feeling truly inspired by the guest speakers’ messages to us.
LOTE NEWS
Term One has been an especially busy one for the LOTE Department. With numerous excursions, a visit from
our Sister School in Japan, a Japanese Intern helping out in the Japanese department, and planning for the
up-coming trip to Italy and France, it has felt as if something was happening almost every day.
French Excursion to French Film Festival
On Tuesday, March 12 th all Year 8 and 9 French students and their teachers attended a screening of “Ernest
et Celestine”, the story of an unlikely friendship between a mouse and a bear who are able to see beyond
other people's prejudices and find what is good in someone whom others have negatively stereotyped, at the
Westgarth Cinema as part of the French Film Festival. The excursion gave the students a great insight into
contemporary French culture and the day was enjoyed by all.
Italian Excursion to Lygon Street
Year 9 Italian students enjoyed an excursion to a gelati shop in Lygon Street in early March with their teachers,
Ms. Claudia Civinini and Ms. Lee De Sarro to put their Italian language skills into action. With all the hot
weather in March, the excursion couldn’t have happened at a better time!
Nishiyama High School Visit
We happily welcomed back our friends from Kyoto Nishiyama High School in Kyoto, Japan on Friday March
15 th , for their bi-annual visit to Australia and the Academy. We were honoured to meet the new principal of
Nishiyama High School, Mr. Zehou Inaba, who accompanied 12 students and 2 staff members on the trip. It
was Mr. Inaba’s first trip to both the Academy and Australia, and he assured us of his on-going support of this
important sister-school relationship. The students participated in many special classes at school such as P.E,
Home Economics, Art and I.T. The LOTE Department would like to thank those members of staff who so
willingly gave up their time to conduct classes for our visitors. In addition to attending classes with their
Academy host sisters, the Japanese students also visited the zoo, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, the Ian Potter
Museum, the Queen Victoria Market and had lunch in Lygon Street. On Sunday March 24 th , Academy staff
and host families farewelled our guests. We would like to thank the families of the following students for
hosting a Nishiyama student : Monica Do (Year 12), Brigette Maher (Year 11), Ella Baulch (Year 11), Mariana
Japanese Intern
The Japanese department was very lucky to
secure the services of an Intern (Language
Assistant) from Monday 18 th February until Friday
15 th March. Ms. Kaori Kishi worked with members
of the Japanese department and visited all
Japanese language classes from Year 7 to Year
12. She introduced many aspects of Japanese
culture to the students including origami, music,
and traditional dress. In the senior classes, Kaori
spent a lot of time working with the girls to help
them improve their oral / aural skills. In addition to
supporting language classes, Kaori immersed
herself in Academy life, attending Athletics Day
and participating in volleyball practice after school.
Christi. Unfortunately the girls fell short be a single run in their semi-final against CLC.
Finally, our seniors won all their games before beating
Mater Christi 107-53 to advance to the final where the girls
defeated St Aloysius by 8 runs; the final scores being 63-71.
Congratulations to the girls especially Olivia-Pearl Kelly for
winning ‘Best Grand Final player’.
Congratulations to all the girls who played and a huge thank
you to the coaches; Mr Tellefson, Mr Bonovia and Mr Natoli
your hard work and guidance truly made this day great for
all the squad.
Hospitality by being friendly to all the other year 7s, Compassion by taking care of other
students who need time to settle into secondary school, and Respect. She shows both
respect for herself and others and is respectful to teachers and always says good morning
Year 10 COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM
118 year 10 students have now been allocated their placements for Community Action week (May 13 th to 17 th ). We
hope they will embrace the essence of this volunteer week which is all about their generous spirit of giving!
Students have been requested to contact the organisation, meet their supervisor, ask lots of questions about what they
will be doing, and return their contract forms by the first Friday of 2 nd term. The school holidays (as long as students are
not placed at a school) presents a great opportunity to visit their placement. Your support in encouraging the students
to meet this deadline will be greatly appreciated. This unique volunteer week will offer the girls a wonderful
opportunity to bravely and maturely give fully of themselves. Facing new situations, including travelling to unknown
areas and spending time with people new to them, while perhaps initially frightening, will undoubtedly reap rewards
for both the students and those they meet.
We aim to assist the students in gaining the best preparation for their Community Action Week through their Reflection
Day to be held at Eltham Community Centre on May 1 st . This will be their perfect opportunity to listen to guest
speakers, join interactive group sessions and participate in role playing scenarios.
Please contact Anne Marie Allan, Community Action Coordinator on 9419 3044 for further information.
