Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi: 4.3.4 Groundwater Availability Page No.60 The groundwater potential in NCT-Delhi depends upon its geological and geomorphological settings. The rocky ridge serves as the watershed. The groundwater occurs in weathered and fractured/jointed parts of these rocks. In the weathered parts, shallow aquifers occur, whereas deep aquifers occur in joints and fractures. Further, the groundwater is found in unconfined to semiconfined zones. The water table in NCT of Delhi is low. Much of the water found in NCT-Delhi is brackish water existing at shallow depths (varying from 20 to 50 m below ground level) in Kanjhawla and Najafgarh blocks and in some minor patches of Alipur and city blocks. In flood plains of Yamuna, fresh-water generally exists at a depth of 35 - 45 m. The groundwater occurrence, movement and availability in NCT – Delhi is controlled by hydro-geological situation by alluvial plains on eastern and western sides of the ridge. The ground water flow direction in NCT of Delhi is depicted in Fig 4.17. The groundwater table found in NCT-Delhi, 1999 is depicted in Fig 4.18. Site I: Bawana Relocation industry site & Site IV: Old Bawana site Depth to water level ranges between 0.7 to 4.5 m bgl. Water logged conditions (water levels less than 2 m) exists in the area along western Yamuna canal, in the areas between Bawana distributory and Western Yamuna Canal and all along Ghoga drain which drains maximum part of the area. Wetlands of Bawana escape exists beyond 1 km from the proposed site in Bawana relocation industrial site. Shallow ground water levels are because of constant recharge by the canal systems present in the area. Seasonal fluctuation of groundwater level in this zone is negligible. Site II: Wazirpur CETP site This site falls in the city block. The depth to water level is about 13 m bgl during October 2001 while during summer (pre-monsoon), the depth increases to about 15 m bgl. A number of shallow and deep tube wells are present in the area those are being used for industrial purposes but not for drinking. The average discharge of these tube wells constructed down to 80 to 90 m. depth is reported to be about 300 to 400 litres per minute (lpm). Site III: Guman Hera The investigation carried out by NPC at the site (March 2002) shows that the water level is at about 6.1 meter and the depth to ground water in this area is reported to be at about 4.5 m bgl by during April 2002. The groundwater table in year 1999 shown in Fig 4.18 around the site was between 2 to 5. However, the drinking water level around the site is reported to be very deep by Delhi Jal Board Official and the extraction of water has been banned in this area. The similar views have been given by the local villagers. Environment Division, National Productivity Council, New Delhi 4
