Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi: Page No.13 Based on the above scenario of hazardous waste genreation, the conceptualised design of common secured landfill facility for disposal of hazardous waste in NCT of Delhi is given in Chapter 6. The total quantity of hazardous wastes which is estimated to be 87,000 m 3 /annum from all the 28 approved industrial estates/areas (including CETPs) shall be disposed off in engineered landfill facility. The engineered landfill facility shall be developed at the best-suited site among the pre-identified potential sites as per the findings of rapid EIA studies. Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi: No.14 3.1 INTRODUCTION Page Chapter - 3 SITE ASSESSMENT AND SELECTION CRITERIA The site assessment requires the technical evaluation of various key factors, based on information on distribution & flow paths of ground water, barriers like aquifers, aquicludes etc. and their hydraulic properties. The sites have been evaluated for its suitability for developing secured landfill facility for disposal of hazardous waste not only based on the data collected from secondary sources but also based on the primary data generated by NPC. 3.2 CPCB CRITERIA FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILLS ("Criteria for Hazardous Waste Landfills", Hazardous Waste Management Series: HAZWAMS/17/2000-01). 3.2.1 Applicability The criteria stated hereafter apply to owners and operators of facilities that dispose hazardous waste in landfills. The term 'hazardous waste landfill' (HW Landfill) is used to designate a waste disposal unit, designed and constructed with the objective of minimum impact to the environment. This term encompasses other terms such as "secured landfill", "engineered landfill", "waste mounds", "waste piles" etc. 3.2.2 Locational Criteria As per the criteria given the hazardous waste landfill sites shall not be located within a certain distance (as the case may be) from the following: Lakes Ponds Rivers Wetlands Flood plains Highways Habitation Critical habitat area Water supply wells Airports Coastal zone (a) Lake or Pond: No landfill shall normally be constructed within 200 m of any lake or pond. Because of concerns regarding runoff of waste contaminated water, a surface water monitoring network with approval of DPCC shall be established.
