Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi: Page No.3 • Local meteorological data (rainfall, temperature, wind direction, seismicity etc.) for the potential sites were collected from Indian Meteorological Department. • Monitoring of surface water resources, ground water and ambient air was carried out at and around three potential sites in order to establish the base line conditions of surface and ground water quality and ambient air quality. • Soil sampling and analysis of soil characteristics were carried out through soil experts. • Hydrologic features of the catchment areas and seasonal fluctuations in ground water table, etc. were obtained from Central Ground Water Board. These details were studied to assess hydro-geological conditions of the area. • Data regarding the geological and geo-technical features of the sites were collected from concerned departments. • The movement and direction of ground water flow were assessed based on the data available from Central Ground Water Board. (ii) Review of the published baseline data/ information with regard to the location of the three potential sites. • Locations of the three potential sites were evaluated based on the baseline data/ information collected regarding location of the sites. (iii) Preparation of the existing land-use/ land cover maps covering 5 km. area around each site based on remote sensing imagery. • The services of expert agencies were employed to prepare the land use/ land cover maps covering 5 km area around each site based on remote sensing imagery obtained for suitable time slot from INSAT 2B/ 2C Satellite. (iv) Investigation and evaluation of the three potential sites as per the "Criteria for Hazardous Waste Landfills" published by the Central Pollution Control Board in February 2001 (HAZWAMS/17/2000-2001) and the Guidelines for Siting of Hazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal Facilities published by Ministry of Environment & Forests on 1991. • Three potential sites were investigated and evaluated based on the baseline data collected as per the "Criteria for Hazardous Waste Landfills" published by the Central Pollution Control Board in February 2001 (HAZWAMS/17/2000- 2001). The potential sites were also evaluated as per the Guidelines for Siting of Hazardous Waste Treatment and Disposal Facilities published by Ministry of Environment & Forests on 1991. Rapid EIA Studies of 3 Pre-identified Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites in NCT - Delhi: Page No.4 • In addition, the sites were evaluated as per the "Site Assessment and Site Evaluation" criteria developed/adapted by NPC based on the practices followed in other developed countries. (v) Identification of adverse environmental impacts due to development of hazardous waste disposal facility at the proposed site and suggesting appropriate mitigation measures required. (vi) Preparation of Environmental Management Plan for the scientific operation and management of hazardous waste disposal facility. • Environmental Management Plan is prepared for the scientific operation and management of hazardous waste disposal facility. (vii) Preparation of contingency plan for emergencies arising out of development of secured landfill facility at the proposed site. • A contingency plan prepared listing procedures to be executed immediately whenever there is emergency like fire, explosion or unexpected release of leachate etc. NPC’s Environmental Laboratory (approved by CPCB under Environmental Protection Act, 1986) was used for the analysis of surface & ground water samples and ambient air quality monitoring.
